destruction staff seems to have a lot of negative consequences to the party when it is used. So much so that it does not appear to be good when solo, because there are no other party members to spread the negative love to.
I have found it to be pretty good regardless of negative effects.
Sounds like the same issue as with Marvel Zombies. The Retail box is a very bare bones version with no variety in characters, and then when you pile on Expansions and the stretch goals boxes, it really opens up to trying different things. Guess its an overall strategy on CMONs part to get people into the crowdfunding dynamic, while still having a retail presence. I just backed Season 5, only a basic pledge but get a stretch goals box to offer a bit of variance. See if I like it, then the other seasons are there to buy if need be.
Yeah this looks to be the business model.
@Neon_Gorilla It does really draw you into the crowdfunding when you get so much more gameplay, But I can't help thinking they could put just a little bit more into the retail boxes rather than stripping them back completely. For example, with Marvel Zombies, just having 8-10 Zombies heroes and Living Abominations instead of the 6 would really open up the player choice. Instead, pledge backers get dozen and dozens of extra characters, to the point they aren't using most of them more than once🤷.
@ I would imagine there is one box worth of highly interesting content in each campaign. They add bloat to add boxes. With marvel I would imagine there are a couple fringe characters each person really is excited for but you have to buy all 50 to get them. I think the fact that the campaigns are so successful legitimizes the practice I just don’t have the wallet and space to participate in it.
@@Neon_Gorilla There's a lot of gameplay bloat in both Marvel Zombies and Marvel United. I think there's an issue with having to make everything compatible and work within the game system, and having to balance, also limits how far they take any one element. So every character in Zombies has the same function of doing damage to the opposing mob, and whether they are throwing 3 dice and hitting on four or four dice and hitting on a 3+, they tend to play similarly. They do have individual powers which give them a bit of nuance, but there's only so much space to push into there. The missions do give the game variety and it definitely fun to play, but that part of the content isn't what's driving those expansion box FOMO pledges😉. It's similar in the United system. The Villain pieces really drive the play experience and actually do make each game feel different, but the heroes are very samey. I see them primarily as collectable/paintable miniatures and worth getting if you like that side of the hobby, but for gameplay, you can pick ten heroes minis and you won't miss much just playing through as many villains as you like with those.
for me its Ticket to Ride. I NEVER had the want to play it, it looked (im so sorry i know) too "kiddy", like monopoly-esque. BOY WAS I WRONG. Played it at a friend's house once and wow what an amazing game!

Just saw one the other day called “The Six of VIII”, themed around the 6 wives of Henry VIII. It’s for partnership play, mainly, and looks good.

They aren't "replacement actions", they're additional/alternate action choices if that standard action is available to you. (rules p20)
Ok
Just 2 minor rule notes: 1st turn has to be in town. Enemies prioritize closeness over their printed priority. Nice job letting your companions do your job ^^ Didnt know prior to this video that companions can play such a big role in this game.
@@Hansi251 thanks this was filmed quite a while ago and still quite new to it so companions were critical. I don’t know how well I do true solo without them. Not much can make up for extra turns and rolls.

Your videos really are great. You should have way more followers and I bet this will come. It is so important to get the impression that the reviewer likes specific points about at game that I could like too and you are doing this very well. While I appreciate your thought behind not doing rankings, I think that a “best of 2024”, “best of all time”, … would at this point be very very good for the UA-cam algorithm.
@@-Ambos- thanks for the kind words. I do have plans for A 2024 tier list!

Wow 3 cameras is a crazy setup!
for these Elder Scrolls playthoughs I have been experimenting with using Ecamm live rather than editing 3 4k views together which would be a nightmare for me. Pretty easy. the dice cam is just my iPhone.
@@Neon_Gorilla That camera setup is insane. 4 separate 4k cameras rolling at the same time is some next level stuff
Excited for this play through!
this will be a three parter....I haven't cut the others but I imagine it will be at lease 8 hours all together
@ good thing I have some vacation time lined up!
Loving the effort on the post production! Has the game sucked you in (no pun intended, but I'll own it).
Thank you, this is actually a pretty low effort edit. All of the views are created in Ecamm live and recorded to one file so I don't have to do much in post out side of all the dead time cuts. The game is great. Still plenty of overhead like TMB but after a few plays I got into a groove. I will forget much of it after stepping away from it for a while thought :)
Hey! Are you just taking a temporary break from UA-cam?
Thanks for asking. This is sort of a complicated question, I am dealing with some burnout after really grinding hard for 6 months or so. I am slowly editing a play through and have 3 or 4 reviews I have committed to but am kind of at the point of trying to find my "why", if that makes sense. If you saw the "UA-cam is a boardgame" video I was trying to figure out what success looks like and the goals I would have and even if how long I will continue. I am still at a similar place where it takes so much time and the ROI on that time is a negative number. I tried to do memberships and only got a handful of supporters so now if I want it to be self sustaining I have to essentially make commercials "previews" for money and that does not excite me so I suppose the short answer to your question is I don't know. I am sure I will make a few more videos but time will tell if I can find a healthy balance and treat this channel as a hobby rather than the job it turned into. Without member support I highly doubt I will ever make 1- 2 videos a week like I was.
@@Neon_Gorilla I was seeing your output of how many videos you were making and the quality they were at and I was rather shocked at your output and volume being a video maker myself. I kept think to myself "how has this guy not burned out yet!?" I have taken two separate 6+ month breaks from UA-cam, one in 2021 and one in 2022. Both times I came back and now I am posting once or twice a week. In my opinion, the best way to view it is as a part time thing and to see where you find efficiencies. Lately, I have just been bulk shooting 3 or 4 videos at a time. You could always try posting like twice a month or something and see if that makes you happier
@@RyanOConnellCFA yeah I took a similar break last year and came back re-energized. I can never really predict what my motivation will be. I think when the channel is growing it's easy to do but continuing to grind through those edits when it is not is tough. We will see....I am highly editing right this second so that is a step in the right direction.
@@Neon_Gorilla I never like the idea of motivation, because it implies that you are going to do something when the feelings are right. For me, its much better to have a set in advance schedule to stick to that needs to be done regardless of how I feel when the thing needs to be done. But with a schedule, then it needs to not be too intense that you can't stick to it. It seems like you were riding on pure motivation and had crazy output and then crashed hard
I hear that and certainly grinded through the motivation blocks for a few months. I am not sure what the goal was at this point to be honest. It is a thankless pursuit that costs me money. I love board games and like when videos I create are recognized. But at this point I can’t really see a scenario that it will ever be more than a dopamine source. That might be ok. I personally might be better off finding a more productive pursuit though.
Thanks for the video! How did you like it solo?
I think the solo was fun and light. For my uses I a probably playing something a little heavier solo though. I will mostly play this co-op with my son. Perfect weight.
I said this in my review on BGG and got roasted for it. These negatives are killers for me. This game isn’t great and relies WAY too much on luck.
Yeah I think the nature of luck is some who have only played it a couple times can have a completely different experience.
Hey. Thanks for the vid and always interesting to hear others experience and thoughts, particularly given this is being sold as a core box standalone, presenting an alternative entry point for newcomers. For myself, CDMD was the very first all-in Kickstarter i ever backed. During its original campaign, there was just one play through video, by the original creators and, tbh, it pretty much sucked! (The only real enthusiasm came from Eric as co creator; but there was enough there for the game to shine through!). I now have seasons 3 & 4 + expansions content and all in on their latest campaign for seasons 5 & 6! Mainly playing solo, using 2 Investigators,i love the experience and challenge brought through the mass variation between Investigators, episodes and old ones and now, mixed up further with the inclusion of the Relics and Unknown Monsters (yes, i will now include these, 2 per game, as standard to balance the relic use. ) I would say my win ratio is probably 4:5. Always love the big cinematic climatic ending of taking down the old one!
@@familymeeple yeah I think this game shines with the more content you have.
For us, it was Quacks of Quendlingburg and Micromacro both for the same reason; my husband thought they looked to kiddish.

@@JacobPorterLadder appreciate you
Okay, I'll admit I'm biased as this is my favorite competitive game of all time, but if anyone previously ignored Champions of Midgard, I'd say you should still give it a shot. I could easily see someone skipping this one for various reasons. One possibility is you just got into the hobby a few years ago and by then it was already old news. I believe it was a 2015 release. Another reason could be that you want to consider yourself more of an elitist gamer, as Neon referenced, and felt that "Ameri-trash/dice chucking" was beneath you. Or maybe you only played the base game and never got a chance to try out the expansions and felt it was just a bit too simple. Well whatever the reason, I say give it a try, especially with the Valhalla expansion. It really turns into a deep game with lots and lots of tough choices to make. The other reason this is worth mentioning now is because Grey Fox Games is doing a 10th Anniversary Edition with the kickstarter coming out soon! If you're at all interested in this old game you may have missed before, head over to their website and sign up to get updates. The exact timing of the kickstarter release is still unknown.
I just come back to this video seeing the latest campaign and I just cracked open my season 1 box to have a go to see if I like it And I have to say, hands down this might be the best coop game I have ever played. It’s the theme that is coming out through the art. Spooky enemies keep chasing up your ass, perhaps delivered through the difficulties. Now if you ask me if investigators mattered, I say I feel they don’t really matter. But those insanity card or whatever they called was so great! It’s like giving them an identity you wanted to avoid them going insane. Now as to whether episode mattered more or elder ones. I am not sure. It felt like the episode mattered more hence most people tell beginners to buy the core box. With all these said though I am still on the fence whether to back the new campaign. I feel I am happy with what I have in hand and given the stress it gives, I don’t think I will play it like everyday. So perhaps 6 episodes already sufficient for me!? I don’t know but Godzilla so cool to me. All in all I am not sure what I should do with this game
I recently bought castles. which looks old and boring to me. I think my wife would gladly play it at any time now.
Awaken realms looks pretty good all other are truly awful aesthetically

Don’t quit, just home-rule things till it’s fun for you. It’s a game after all. I’m playing on easy where I return 3 cards per hp. In 7th continent they added modules that really helped with the difficulty. Also, in the faq they recommend playing the books in a certain order. That might also help as the one you picked was not the recommended next one.
@@bluesteel8473 I tried again and it’s simply not fun…to each is own I guess
Farseers seems like a brutal win-more card in 2 players. Many of the powerful Guild cards are balanced by the fact opponents can raid and steal them (all A and S tier cards having a maximum of 2 keys). However, in a 2-player scenario, a dominant player with Farseers can seize early, get perfect knowledge of their opponent’s hand, and take their best card for a weak card. I could see constantly starving an opponent of Battle cards being effective - or taking a critical high card in order to maintain lead dominance.
We miss ya! I’m sure real life is catching up? But just checking in!
Yeah it’s been tough lately I was on quite the sprint and burnt out. I am taking a break until inspiration hits once more. Thanks for checking in
This video reminded me a lot of the Arcs conversation online this year. The game has some people who absolutely love it and will defend it to the ends of the earth, and others who have bounced really hard off of it - usually after 1-3 plays. A lot of the conversations that I've seen and had with people have been along the lines of: Person A (Likes Arcs): "If you get more plays in, you'll realize that your criticisms X, Y, Z are actually non-issues and there are multiple ways around the restrictions presented by the game. Once you've played more times, then X, Y, and Z are no longer issues." Person B (doesn't like Arcs): "I'm an experienced enough gamer to know after just a play or two if a game is right for me or not, I know what I like and you are gatekeeping and can't comprehend that your game isn't perfect. Classic 'get good, noob' gamer." Person A: "I'm not telling you that you can't like a game, I'm just saying that your criticisms are only things you experience while you are still new at the game. If you are willing to put in a bit of effort then it is really rewarding." Person B: "Meh, life is too short and there are too many games out there for me to waste my time playing something I don't like. I have too many other games to play so if it doesn't hook me instantly why waste my time?" The mindset in the board gaming community (not just among reviewers) is so consumeristic, reducing games down to something you buy, play once, then claim you don't have time to invest in them because there are so many others you'd rather play. What happened to delayed gratification? What happened to putting in a little effort for something? Imagine if we only did things in life that we 100% loved the first time we experienced it? How many friendships would we miss out on, how many cool places would we never travel too because we felt a bit uncomfortable being outside of our comfort zones, how many delicious foods would we never experience because it has an ingredient that you didn't like in some other recipe? I feel like I'm going crazy listening to some of the online discussions. Then if a lot of other people do like something, then of course they are going to talk about it. So why do people call games "overhyped" when they don't like it? A given game might not be for you, but if thousands of other voices are all saying something like you experienced - A Feast for Odin is incredible and really well received by so many people - the thought that one person's opinion makes all of those invalid rather than doing what you did and making an effort to understand why a game is so beloved and maybe if you are the exception/person missing something drives me crazy.
Yeah this is the exact issue at hand with arcs which I did a video addressing the validity of the criticism if a player bounced off of it in the first couple plays. I honestly have recently gotten pretty burnt out trying to keep up and make videos on the hotness because the pace needed does not give games much time to breath and then I am giving a half baked take to people. I have had a similar arc with Barrage and Gaia Project as of late. Both of which I could easily call complete crap after playing it a couple times and not understanding nuance. I also stopped watching impressions or even videos on newly released games because I know how much time it takes to develop a nuanced opinion and the UA-cam incentive system severely punishes creators who take their time and publish reviews months after receiving a game. I think you are right to point out this is an instant gratification problem that doesn't pair well with multi dimensional complex board games.
@Neon_Gorilla Totally agree! I'm at the point where I much prefer finding content on games that I've known and loved for a while rather than looking for the new hotness. Going deep in a few games is way more satisfying for me, especially since trying to get my poor friends to learn a new game every week just doesn't work. Way more fun when everyone already knows what to do when they show up instead of spending 40 minutes explaining and looking up rules. For the record, Gaia Project is unbelievably good but took a LONG time for me to click. I'm still not very good but at least can see a bit of the matrix haha. It took me probably 10ish plays to have any sense of direction in the game, and I'm so glad I did! The app and the fact that it's on BGA helped get reps in, and it's one of the most rewarding games I've ever dug into.
Absolutely spot on analysis, super helpful. Subscribed.
I agree for playing BArrage! Crowdfunding doesn't interest me now... too rissky and almost never really an avantage exept you MAYBE get it before others, sometimes :P

Interesting take on the game system. Thank you. I backed the KS way back when, and received the game just last week. I got the Core Season 3, the KS Strech Goals and the KSE Animal Allies and I think there is plenty to sink my teeth into there, for the experience. I would, however, wholly agree with you, that going ONLY with Season 3 and nothing else, might be experienced as a bit lacking overall in variation. Cheers!
