Wimbledon tennis walk 2024: Southfields to the Championships ground SW19, Wimbledon Village & trains
The Wimbledon Tennis Championships, usually just called Wimbledon, are the oldest in the world. This walk takes you from Southfields tube station, to the starting point of the famous Wimbledon queue for tickets, and onwards to the Wimbledon tennis grounds, for a sneak peek as Wimbledon prepares for Wimbledon fortnight. From the Wimbledon grounds, we continue to Wimbledon village and then down the hill to Wimbledon train station. On the way, I give you plenty of information about joining the public queue for Wimbledon tickets and some facts about the Wimbledon tennis over the years. Plus a bit of history. Enjoy the strawberries and cream whether you are there in person, or sitting as an armchair expert watching the tennis on the TV at home.

Hello Angela I missed a live walk bummer. There is a small museum in the Canada house. The Ambassador was not in as his car is normally parked by the bronze plaque you where looking at. Eleanor of Castile is my 23rd great grandmother. You did not get to the spot where the distance are measured from, which was on the island just opposite the closed Charing Cross tube station. Thanks for the walk around. We did not visit when we where there in June. Take care Chris and Sandra of Canada.

My goodness Chris, is there anyone you are not related to in UK high society??!! That's an impressive claim to fame. I was a little befuddled as my notes had not transferred to my phone so I was working from memory, so yes, I forgot to point out the actual correct point for Charing Cross. If I were to plan livestreams around your times, what are they in GMT? I try to film during days with better weather so as not to get the gimbal and phone wet, so can't always promise particular days, but times eg before you go to work, I may be able to adjust. All the best, Angela

Thank You for this Angela and glad I was able to participate in the Live Chat. Apologies if I got rather emotional regarding the unexpected loss of my mum. Incidentally, my current profile photo shows my mum and I. Photo was taken at the nearby lavender fields about two years ago. I went back there on Friday in her honour. Anyhow, I enjoyed the video and I know my mum would have done as well. The Canadian High Commission was a nice touch. Chris & Sarah would have liked that too. 🇨🇦 I've got a fair amount of YT viewing to catch up on, particularly regarding a "Certain Walker that's Watched". 😊 Anyhow, Thank You again for brightening up what is a very challenging time for me. I've deleted the clips that the app livestreamed(!), so I can't reply to your earlier comment. I'm trying out some apps that allow me a better view of comments while I'm livestreaming, as when you were commenting on Wednesday, they disappeared off the screen far too fast for me to catch them all. It was only when I watched the stream back that I realised I had missed a lot of them, and Luke's reading skills can't keep up to help me. So if you see odd little clips, it's me trying to work out technology, which is not my strong point! On the bright side, I'm working on this so I can keep up with comments better! Hello Angela. How are you? Very bad news from us. Mum has lost her mobility. She cannot walk or stand up. I am at her bedside at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and she can barely speak. A CT scan has shown brain bleeding on each side. I am totally devastated and have no idea what the future holds. She fell down the stairs on April 29th and fractured her wrist which was in a cast for 6:weeks and still swollen. But the far bigger issue is her CT scan. We are awaiting to have her transferred to Kings College hospital in London with a view to surgery although she said she would rather not have it. Apologies for this but I wanted you to know. Interesting you mentioned Melbury Place. I immediately remembered the Melbury Marketplace on the corner of Melbury Place and Kensington High Street. The reason I remember it so well is due to Lord Melbury, the character in an episode of Fawlty Towers! Lord Melbury presented himself as very upper class but turned out to be a confidence trickster, having deposited his briefcase of "valuables" for safekeeping. Basil was none too impressed when he later discovered the briefcase was full of bricks and took his anger out on "Lord" Melbury in the closing scenes whilst he was being arrested, all in full view of other guests checking in. Every time I pass by the Melbury Marketplace on Kensington High Street, I remember that eposide! It always makes me feel like going in there and calling out "Hello Lord Melbury. Any valuables to deposit? Any bricks?" :)

My comments wouldn't be complete without a comparison with my other homeland of the Pacific Northwest right? Ok, here goes and this one was prompted by your title: On the Eastside of Greater Seattle (3 hours south of Vancouver, Canada), is the area called Medina which is famous for its "Billionaires' Row". Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft as well as Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon each own their mansions on Billionaires Row. It's somewhat different to what you've shown very well in London. Specifically, Medina is more an urban area surrounded by forest and also on the waters edge of Lake Washington. Mum and I have driven around the area many times and right past the Bill Gates mansion. However, I didn't want to hang around there too long as the police will come and ask what you are doing. In fact, Medina has it's own police department and every single intersection there has video cameras. They record the licence plate of every vehicle at every intersection and the system then immediately checks against a database to see if the vehicle has been marked as suspicious in any way. If so, an alarm is automatically raised with the Medina police and a cruiser is dispatched right away. Also, all video with licence plates is saved for a period of several months. Regardless of the heavy security monitoring, it's quite an area to drive through. Last time Mum and I were back there earlier this year, we even went into an open house in Medina that was open for the general public, which was quite an experience. Interestingly, the husband and wife realtor were telling us how much they love Vancouver! A few years ago, we also took a 90 min cruise on Lake Washington on the tour boat that runs from Kirkland Marina just down the road from Medina. One great feature of that cruise is that it sails all along Billionaire Row and we got to see many of these mansions from the water. However, Bill Gates's mansion is hidden by trees. Either way, it was quite an experience! Look up "Argosy Cruises Kirkland WA". Do also look up "Billionaire Row Medina Washington State" both via Google as well as here in YT. Re Washington State (or WA as per it's official two letter abbreviation): Not to be confused with Washington DC which is the other side of the USA. Back in Vancouver, there are quite a few areas for Millionaire homes. Perhaps the best known is a neighbourhood called (rather suitably) British Properties which is up on the North Shore Mountains. Then there's also the Shaughnessy neighbourhood with it's mansions. In fact the CEO of the company I worked for for 20 years lives there. There's also Kerrisdale. And the whole Vancouver West Side is well known for it's multi million dollar homes, especially on the University Endowment Lands or UEL as it's known. You can Google and look up photos of properties in all these various areas.

@@ChattyWalkswithAngela Hello Angela. Oh wow, you are considering a trip to the west coast of North America at some point! Do keep us posted. I'd be happy to give you more tips, having lived in Vancouver for 30 years as well as crossed the border around 400 times into the USA. Btw there's a Seattle tv program that airs almost every night called Evening Magazine. We get it up in Vancouver as we receive all the Seattle tv stations north of the border. I'm always watching and recording Evening Magazine when I'm there. It's all about interesting things in the Pacific Northwest. Anyhow, there's a regular segment they have on the show called Unreal Estate where they feature multi million dollar homes in the Seattle area, both inside and out. There are many of these segments right here on UA-cam. To view these, search right here in YT for "Evening Magazine Unreal Estate". Incidentally a few years ago mum and I met the whole team from Evening Magazine. We were at the huge Northwest Flower and Garden Show at the Washington State Convention Center (American spelling there) in downtown Seattle...and bumped into the whole crew, who were there to cover the event for their show that same evening! There's a piece they did about the remodelled house boat that was featured in the film many years earlier. Btw did you know that at one point, that houseboat was bought by a couple that saw the movie, fell in love with both the film and the houseboat and decided they just had to buy it! They move from all the way across the US to buy the houseboat, which is situated on the shores of South Lake Union in Seattle.

Well Hello Angela. How are you and family? Mum and I were in the area this past Friday. Attended the Mind, Body & Spirit Show at Olympia and then caught the bus to Sloane Square in order to see Chelsea in Bloom and then walk to see Belgravia in Bloom. Saw all the flower displays at Sloane Square, Duke of York's Square and Eccleston Yards. Chelsea was a lot more crowded than Belgravia, likely also because the nearby Chelsea Flower Show was on. We then walked to Harrods and although we were well aware it would be closed by then, we wanted to see the window displays. From there we took the tube back to Hammersmith where we had parked at the Livat. Got back to Canterbury at 1:30 am, having got up the previous morning at 4:15 am to head to London. It was a long day. Plus the next morning we got up early to go to a local car show! Anyhow, looking forward to seeing your latest video. We've been into Holland Park itself some time ago as well as visited the adjacent London Design Museum at least twice. But we've not as yet ventured into the Millionaires Row, though I'm well aware of it. Your video will be a very useful homework for us on a future visit and as you know, we are at London Olympia several times a year for various events. Speaking of which, we are looking forward to the completion of the Olympia expansion but it may be another two years or so. Just realized your video is 1 hour long. This should be very interesting. We are also playing catch up with the latest two videos from "A certain other Walker that's Watched". 😊 Anyhow, Thank You for this. Take care and speak soon.🇬🇧 🇨🇦

The house on the left at 15:42 is where the Carry On film actor Jack Douglas lived for many years. The cricket green as you described it is Giggs Hill Green. The MMB offices were overlooking the green at the far end towards Esher on the right hand side.

Greetings from Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire. We were also at BBC Gardener's World Spring Fair at Beaulieu yesterday. About to drive back to Canterbury now. Mum fell down the stairs at home last week and fractured her wrist. Her arm is now in a sling and cast and she's in considerable pain despite prescription pain killers. Anyhow we are looking forward to catching up on your latest video in the next day or so. Always cheers us up. Hope all is well with you and family. We are about to embark on the 2.5 hour drive back home to Canterbury.

I was born in Kennington and lived in the flats opposite the park on Kennington park road.. not been back since the late 1970’s, There used to be a maize in the flower garden, I’m sure it was just a rose garden, used to go swimming in the outdoor Pool which I’m sure is long gone. Enjoyed this, thank you.
