    Hi Lindy, I got so much pleasure out of your video today. I loved Laurie‘s poem even though I don’t understand Canadian politics at all. This week I watched the Bob Dylan movie and I’ve been going down a rabbit hole with music and books. I’ll tell you more about that in a message. But you have so many books here that I’m interested in. I have to wake up and write them down before I forget them. I read a few Roddy Doyle‘s books that cracked me up so I think I want to visit his character Paula, who I never heard of. Blue castle also sounds something I want to read, but not now. I went down another rabbit hole because of the best of 2024 and I’m now in the 30s with Jean. Rhys in Paris and I’m wondering if you read her. It’s not a happy book, but it’s Paris and someone said in the book everyone goes back to Paris. I understand. Sending lots of aloha your way, dear friend.

      @@readandre-read I think introverts are immediately attracted to a book titled I Hate Parties! I had avoided the earlier Paula Spencer novels because I knew they were about addiction and family violence. It’s good to read Paula’s success story… and realistic that she continues to deal with her past actions. Hum can be viewed as a psychological thriller, a genre I don’t pick up often, but it has enough of what I like for me enjoy it despite the fast pace. What I didn’t mention about Memory Piece is that the print edition has illustrations. I assume these go with the short archival sections between parts, but I don’t know for sure because I listened to the audio.

    I love cranberries. I usually buy two giant bags from costco in the fall, so I can cook with them for an extended period. This year I made cranberry simple syrup to use in mocktails! Tart and refreshing. Yum. I am currently listening to Ed Park's Same bed, Different Dreams. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I have seen a few people comment that you need to give it a good 100 pages. I haven't made it quite that far, but I suspect that's when you see the different parts start to come together. Seattle has tried to restore a few wetlands in the city near me. It is a huge undertaking to try and re-create those natural spaces often requiring the removal of blackberries and other invasive plants and re-planting native species. I've been watching the work in these locations for 10+ years. I've really noticed an uptake in the number of birds in these locations. One of these areas had an unexpected bonanza of chum salmon return. So much so, that the Orcas were seen in an unusual area taking advantage of the bounty. We had a great walk cheering on the salmon trying to make their way upstream to spawn.

    I'd got some clearance cranberries after thanskgiving and froze them to make cranberry sauce (with loads of orange and ginger) for xmas, and it turned out so well I loaded up on post Xmas sale berries 😄 so I'm glad to learn of cranberry curd to perhaps try with some of my excess, I looked up a number of recipies, seems like it would be lovely with almond or pecan. That's so funny you don't like the cover of Anecdotes, as soon as you had it up I was intrigued. It's not attractive or appealing for sure, but evocative. I have seen the Kimmerer book all over, but had no idea it was another name for Saskatoon berries! Amazing. I really enjoyed Older's book as well last year, tho it was at the wrong time for me, so I am hoping to enjoy the sequel even more at the right time.

Thanks for the tip! I’m glad the cover of Anecdotes intrigues you. One of my book club members said she likes it a lot. Now let’s talk about cranberries! I love having extra cranberry sauce. I use it like jam on toast or mix it into plain yogurt. Chopped fresh or frozen cranberries are also a great addition to dhal or other savoury legume-based dishes. A cranberry curd tart in a pecan crust would be divine.

    • @ReadBecca
      @ReadBecca 11 днів тому

      @@lindysmagpiereads Yes I also have mostly used it a bit in place of where I would jam (or really I use a lot of marmalade more than jam). I usually add to with nuts & flax seeds to oatmeal/cream of rice or cottage cheese, or on top of baked sweet potatoes. I'm definitely much more of a savory than sweet person, but I wouldn't have thought of cranberry with legumes, but that actually sounds lovely so I will have to try it out! I've been using a lot of pickled beets in things recently, that I think lightly cooked cranberry could work in most of the time, even green salad with salad with cranberry, balsamic & nuts/seeds (I will have to get some pepitas to try with that!) seems like it would work well.

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads 11 днів тому

      @ Cranberry sauce with sweet potatoes is my idea of perfection. Oranges go well with cranberry so a marmalade made with both…. that would be special. My sister sells a spicy sauce that she makes with a combination of cultivated cranberries and wild lingonberries. It’s yummy. Dried cranberries are lovely in a salad but I haven’t tried fresh ones. Let me know how that goes. Or did you mean that you would use cranberry sauce in the salad dressing? Persian recipes often combine tart fruit (apricots, barberries, sour plums, dried limes) with savoury rice dishes and stews. This is an avenue to explore. Have fun in the kitchen!

      @@ReadBecca If you’ve read Frances Hardinge, you know how intricate and chunky her novels tend to be. I was amazed at how much depth she infused into the novella-length Island of Whispers. Emily Gravett’s illustrations are partially responsible for the immersive experience, of course. I read a digital copy on Hoopla, but I also handled the physical book at a bookstore. It’s the size of a children’s picture book. Beautifully designed. I strongly encourage you to read Isabel Greenberg! Encyclopedia of Early Earth is a great place to start.
