Hi Lindy, as always, I enjoy your eclectic selection of books; thanks to you, I have explored so many wonderful titles I otherwise might not have picked up. I am in a reading dry spell due to work, studies, and my distracted mindset but I always enjoy your videos. My TBR continues to grow despite not reading as much as I would like. Adding Real Ones and Lolly Willows to my TBR. The passage you shared was delightful. Thank you, Lindy! ❤️

Biography of X sounds really good. That last quote!😂 I recently read a Julie Flett picture book - hadn’t known about that author before but loved it. I’m hoping to read Lolly Willowes with Marilyn soon. It’s been on my tbr for some time as well!I find if a book is an odd shape I’m less drawn to picking it up, though not sure if it affects my response to them, but it may well do, I’ve just not paid that close attention to it!

@@spreadbookjoy Which of Julie Flett’s books did you read? My absolute favourites are The Girl and the Wolf (with Katherena Vermette), and Birdsong.
The speculative element in Lolly Willowes adds a delicious sense of wonder that I can imagine will really appeal to you. I think having you as a buddy reader will be perfect for Marilyn’s next attempt at Lolly Willowes, since you can explain the Britishisms.
I hadn’t thought of this until just now, but oddly shaped picture books are attractive to me because they stand out and because I can see the purpose for their shape. The Balcony is an example, with the height-width ratio contributing to feel of the setting.

Speaking of book shapes, I have a special love for narrow books, which I can hold with just one hand. Smaller book feels more protective of its content, "shy", and secretive. Big books "scream" to me, they are bold and they have a loud voice to a reader. Big books have so much space to speak to its reader, they are rich with thwie opportunities.

Interesting question about book shape Lindy. I'd never thought about that. It changes the texture of the book, the book feel when you hold it, so I guess it would change the reading experience. I prefer trade paperback as a format over mass market for whatever difference that makes. So it makes sense that a squarer book would read differently to a more rectangular one I guess?
I love the synchronicity of your Catherine Lacey and Marguerite Duras reads. And thanks for the reminder I haven't listened to that bookclub on The Lover yet. I've got a lot of audiobooks on loan at the moment, with due dates looming though. I started Julia Armfield's Private Rites this afternoon and just loving it so far, probably 1/4 of the way in.
I thought The Safekeep was too overtly sexual too. I was surprised to see it on the Booker list because of that. I liked the rest of the book, the premise and the themes but really found that middle section too much.
I didn't recognise Still Life as Strayan. Will have to check it out.
That poor lady pigeon was just trying to get a bite to eat I think.

Thank you for reminding me to check my library’s holdings for Armfield’s new book. It is listed as on order now, so I was able to place my name on the waiting list. I’m glad you are enjoying it. Our Wives Under the Sea was amazing!
I have another collection of short stories by the same publisher as Disembark (House of Anansi) and it’s also that shorter chunky shape. Maybe it’s a way for their books to stand out?

Last year I requested Biography of X from the library. Then it took forever and came up at an inopportune time. Sounds like I should try again! I love dystopian or alternate reality stories.
I read the Safekeep. I liked it but I also guessed the plot. I thought it was a strong first novel; interested to see what she writes next.
Book shape- I'm okay with odd shapes; it's things like tight bindings or bad paper that throw me.
The lady pigeon needs to file a complaint with HR!

    • @lindysmagpiereads
      @lindysmagpiereads  3 місяці тому +1

@@readandre-read Oooooh! Don’t get me started on tight bindings and bad paper. And lack of white space around the margins of the text. And lack of contrast when light ink colours are used against a shaded ground. And ugly fonts. Don’t get me started! 😂
Fatter books like Biography of X can be hard to juggle into your reading schedule when you’re at the mercy of library holds. We can suspend holds at my library and I use that feature often, but there’s still the issue of reading it within a 3-week time frame because others are waiting. Another thing is that I lose interest in reading something once my initial enthusiasm has expired. I regularly prune my hold list for that reason.
I do think you would enjoy Biography of X when you have the inclination to read it.
Regarding The Safekeep, I wondered if revealing that Isabel is queer would be a spoiler but it seemed so obvious to me from the outset, plus I know that some of my subscribers won’t pick it up unless they know there is significant queer content. The other plot point that I haven’t mentioned is something foreshadowed early on.

I knew Isabel was queer because of other reviews. I think even the author said something about it in an interview. That other plot point is the one I guessed. There were a lot of clues. I think maybe that was part of the point- the characters could have seen that too, but they were oblivious to the situation.

    • @lindysmagpiereads

@@readandre-read Yes, the obliviousness of the siblings. I agree that is part of the point of the story. The Safekeep introduced me to distressing new information: that when the Dutch Jewish prisoners were liberated from concentration camps, it seems there were no Dutch officials or aid workers to assist in their return home.

Hello Lindy, I have the same copy of lolly Willowes. I haven’t given up on the book. I’m just not in the right headspace to read a dense at the moment. The fantastical element doesn’t bother me. I read the juniper tree by Barbara Comyns which is based on a brothers Grimm tale and I still enjoyed it. But then I love her writing.
I read “the lover” many years ago and what I loved about it was the setting and time of the novel. I also was very immature and thought it romantic and yes, sexy. But I was young then.😊
I even bought the movie, which was X-rated by the way. I had to hide it from my children. I think it was 1992. I want to read it again but from a different perspective. I remember thinking the writing was very odd but maybe that’s the best part of the book and I was missing it.
I had to look up Prince Edward Island. Is that where Stratford is? I love to watch plays so maybe one day I will visit. I also wanted to visit the west end of London because my eldest daughter said every play is acted superbly. Loved your video. Aloha dear friend.

Stratford is in the southern part of the province of Ontario. The theatre festival is well established and the funding is sufficient for high-quality performances. Such a treat! It’s a nice change from seeing one- or two-handers on minimal stage settings, which is usually all that can be afforded by theatres in Canada.
