      in general, the closer to the foul line you can be with your body, the better. But everyone's body mechanics is different and easier for some than others. It's important to remember to use your legs as much as possible for power and control rather than just focusing on the knee. Keeping your trail leg closer to the floor helps with this. And doing leg exercises like lunges and squats can help to strengthen the legs which can lead to a deeper knee bend. Thanks for the comment!

    I bowled for the first time with my new ball. Everything was going good, next day my whole thumb was numb, but not sore feeling. Problem is now when I hold the ball on the back and forward motions it messes with that nerve in my thumb. So now I'm at the point I cannot bowl one handed. There is a considerable amount of space left in the traditional thumb hole. I am unsure whether I want to continue one handed due to nerves in the thumb or if it's just a fitment issue, Or go to two handed.

      I would definitely go back to your pro shop and see what they can do for your fit and pitch. Having numbness isn't normal and needs to be addressed right away. I am sorry you're dealing with this and wish you luck getting it fixed! You may also try to get a lesson with a certified coach in your area and they may have some suggestions too.

      @@RebeccaBowls Hey Rebecca! I will definitely be headed back to this weekend to get my fitment checked. From what I’m seeing is I have too much slop in the thumb hole in turn making me grip the ball too hard. I’ve also seen a video that mentioned the thumb should be squeezing back towards the thumbnail, but with too much gap that strategy puts too much of the balls weight on that very bottom of my thumb nail. But there’s no nerve pain. I’m really hopeful with a proper fitting thumb I can bowl one handed pain free because it feels more natural than two hands.

    I think focusing on having it cupped at the peak of the backswing is also critical to getting under the ball. You can practice that by getting a light house ball that fits your fingers and get the feel of that without even throwing the ball. Ofcourse, you can throw the ball if you wish. I notice alot of beginner to intermediate bowlers who do not get "cupped" at the peak of their backswing which makes it much harder for them to get under the ball at their release.

    Haha I've been bowling many many times in my life. But when I was a kid my uncle or dad always kept score (because my alley was way behind on the automated scoring) . And then when I was old enough to do it myself they started doing the math for ya . without seeing your wrist support or you bowling with it, it's hard to say. You may consider talking to your pro shop operator about trying other supports that will allow you to stay under the ball more. I would also say doing foul line drills practicing this is always helpful. Sometimes we just revert to what we usually do or know and it takes time to change a habit. I hope this helps you! Are you referring to a simple ROB's position or are you talking about a mongoose? Are you talking about the adjustable bionic a different adjustable ZL one the so many out there I know all of them I've tried all of them. @@joehoenig7596 I don't use them myself so I can't be any help there for a recommendation. Is there a reason why you use one? If it's not a physical health issue, then perhaps trying to go without one for awhile, or at least when you do drills will help strengthen your wrist and help you stay more under the ball. The drill in the video would work better without a wrist support I believe. Hope that helps!

      @@RebeccaBowls thank you yes there's a reason why I use one. It's not necessarily injury related, but I have done measurements time and time again, including including Kegel and the upshot is that I have a very low rev rate, and with the support it's slightly better without the support. It's almost nonexistent so it's an unusual reason for wearing a wrist support. I do not have the physical flexibility in my wrist to do the modern yo-yo release so that's not gonna be an option so there you have it, thank you

    Let me guess. You had your balls drilled (in Milwaukee) at the Bowlers Pro Shop near the airport. These guys were terrific drillers. But they had the tendency to favor reverse thumb pitch. While this worked well for a lot of bowlers, it did not work for me. I ended up with a blistered, bleeding thumb joint after several games. I simply thought this was normal, and used skin patch/superglue to reduce the wear and tear on my thumb. Years later I went to another pro shop and they suggested forward pitch for my particular hand/grip. That fixed my beat up thumb, and also fixed some issues I was having with release. Morale of the story, if you are having thumb trouble (whether physical or release-wise) get a second opinion on your thumb fit/pitch. Thank you Rebecca for posting this informative video!

      you will want to be sure you're putting the ball down into the swing on step one if you take 4 steps or step 2 if you take 5 steps. It's something to practice and you can practice without a ball at home to work on timing. And 19lbs is quite heavy. The heaviest legal weight in bowling balls is 16 lbs. Most adults throw 14 or 15 but you will want to also have a weight comfortable for you. Brad and Kyle just made a video addressing this issue this week that I would suggest. Hope that helps!

    I had really bad thumb issues. Ball would stick to my thumb and not leave my hand. I took it to the pro shop. His advice? "Dude, you need to relax." And he was right. I was squeezing too tight. I have since learned to release my thumb at or behind my knee instead of lofting it. Gravity pulls the ball off my thumb. Problem solved. "Numb the thumb" is now my motto. I only use my thumb for aiming on the downswing. The middle two fingers provide the rotation.

    I started back bowling a year or so ago with alley balls (I was an avid duckpin bowler in my youth and did some tenpins). I bought a ball a month ago or so and had it drilled. When I can get my thumb out, it works well. But I've had problems with the thumb sticking or dropping the ball, which I think are all problems of trying to get the release down better, especially the grip. When it was working, my speed was much higher then normal. I know I hear a lot about people with similar problems who had the thumb hole reworked but this made the problem worse as they then gripped it harder. Trying to find the right happy medium.

    Well, yesterday I focused on keeping the index and pointer fingers "V" towards the pins and my elbow close to my body. My right shoulder already dips slightly due to my back, so I focused on bringing the arm back. Earlier watched a Brad and Kyle video to imagine a string from my middle finger down to the ball, as my 2nd step forward the string pulls the ball down. I began my approach and never felt like I was overthinking where I had to stop and restart. Since my 40 year old rubber Ebonite ball has no movement, it's a pretty straight line to the pins. My accuracy yesterday was the best since I started bowling weekly again mid Jan. after a 40 year hiatus. I didn't find myself off balance at all. Honestly in trying to remember, I do not recall if I planted my right foot in the proper finishing position, holding it as you suggest. I just kept bowling and my 1 hour finished with starting a 5th game...I ended up averaging 166 for the night. I started with 189, 153, 171, 141 & finished with 177. I had not kept all my previous outings scores but had them print off this and will keep a running average. I mentally was averaging around 140 or so the previous 8 outings since starting to bowl weekly. I ran into one of my mentors at the alley and told him the tips I had been using on here. I asked him, "when do you think I am ready to get a new ball that I can begin learning how to throw a hook (since I throw a straight shot)"? He has an 15 pound ball he said he would give to me. So I think when he comes back from a Vegas tournament next weekend, I'll take him up on this offer and have it professionally drilled. I am going to start your can in a bag drill today!! I wish I had had training like this when I was first learning on the fly as a kid in the early '60s!! Guess you can train an old dog after all :)) Thank you again Rebecca!!!

    Will try to utilize your foul line drills today! I've rewatched this video at least a half dozen times and took photos to practice with......when I try doing them at home looking into a mirror, I find myself at times out of sync by overthinking like a basketball shot, a pool shot! I just started bowling again weekly from a 40 year hiatus! Very inconsistent but getting better. Missed a 200 last week by 1 pin but had 3 other games averaging around 130.....It's definitely my balance that has prevented me from being consistent. My ball does not move at all. I also am learning to correct my hand position of being under the ball (under the imaginary equator line that I learned from a Brad and Kyle video). I used to hold my ball around 11 o'clock and throwing it. So I will try to adjust this today along with my balancing. The results may be disastrous today if I overthink what I am doing! Hopefully, this is not the case!! I'm still using my old 16 lb Ebonite ball from 40 years ago. Eventually will buy a new ball. From what I learned yesterday for the proper size, take my weight and divide by 11. So I should move down to a 15 lb ball. But which ball to get with so many choices. I feel I should get more consistent first before buying a new ball which will hook. Thank you for such a great video Rebecca!!!

I would suggest talking to a good pro shop operator for a suggestion on a ball. You’ll find a new reactive ball easier and more fun to work with. Keep us posted and good luck!

    • @RebeccaBowls
      @RebeccaBowls 7 місяців тому

      Have you had your fit checked lately? I would start there. And to gain more consistency in your release I would suggest the no step drill at the foul line, paying attention to whether you’re squeezing or pushing your thumb against the thumb hole. It’s hard to say without seeing you. I would ask your PSO or other coach in your area to take a look. Let us know how it goes!

    Affirmations: After making an adjustment that keeps the line of strikes going, I like to say out loud to myself and others: "I love it when a plan comes together." Also, I don't know if it's an affirmation exactly, but if I mess up or something like that, it helps me to remind myself that I'm human, and it's OK to mess up. Recent experience: I figured out that for several weeks I've been pushing my shoulder forward at my release, which was causing me difficulty pushing the ball to the right. I finally figured out what I'd been doing wrong, but instead of castigating myself for not knowing the solution, I kept in mind that I'm not going to catch everything, even in my own game. And that that's OK. Problem fixed, and I've had 5 straight clean games since making the fix.

    i'm a leftie and my thumb keeps getting stuck in the ball and i end up with a late release and excessive tilt and rotation, but when i flatten my shot, i get a fantastic 3/4 roll on the ball. i have a stiff and short (2 3/4") thumb. my previous pitch was 1/16" right lateral and 5/16" reverse. had the thumb redrilled again. this time, it's 1/16 left lateral and 1/2" reverse. hopefully, i would get a clean release this time. sadly, we don't have proshops with actual serious pros' in them. just guys who are taught to drill holes and there aren't even any shops in my area interchangeable inserts as well. so, i'm struggling to get the right grip.

    • @RebeccaBowls

      that's tough....but often PSO aren't pros but can be very skilled in what they do. I would suggest researching good pro shops that are driveable and maybe taking a road trip to one. I would ask around to other good bowlers in your area to see who they use. I drive about an hour and a half to mine. And because he's so good others travel a few hours once a year to see him. Best of luck finding someone who is a good fit for you! It's important.

    I've always used a slide based delivery. I recently got new shoes and found I needed help to make the new shoe slide, so I I got one of the "toe cover" type slide assists. It helped, but it still seems that I stop too quickly when my heel lands. Do you have any ideas to "doctor" the heel of my slide shoe?

    • @RebeccaBowls
      @RebeccaBowls Рік тому

      That's an interesting question. I haven't really done much with heels and I think most of the slide is impacted by the sole although a higher heel may impact it as well. Have you tried doing one step drills to help lengthen your slide and stay up on the front of your foot longer? Did you find you slid more or longer with the shoes you used to use?

    • @sandydubya
      @sandydubya Рік тому

      @@RebeccaBowls With my old shoes(really old), I never had a problem with "sticking" on my heel. Those shoes were of a really "old time" design with a much higher heel. That type design really isn't around any more. I have a pair by Dexter now, but the heel isn't replaceable like the more expensive shoes. So, I really can't do much with it. I'm going to try some slide powder next week. If that isn't helpful, I'll try newer shoes with a heel I can modify to slide better.
