While I've been bowling more consistently in the past year and a half, the scoring is always done by the computer. When my friends have tried to explain it to me, I just get confused. I only regret that I didn't view a video like this earlier. I really appreciate it, Rebecca.
glad it was helpful!
Grew up in the age where the bowling alley computer calculates the score and never understood how it did it. 34 years later, I've finally learnt how it works!
Love this video, thanks for making it! I miss scoring the old fashioned way, pencil, paper, and that overhead projector! I always loved doing that, it was an important job! BTW, in your example, here in the video, the way the spares are marked looks like a #1, could be a little clearer by marking it diagonally, corner to corner.
Glad you enjoyed it! I have good memories growing up scoring the old fashioned way too. And I did notice that the app I used for the scoring did look somewhat like a one instead of a spare. I was hoping it wouldn't be too confusing. Thanks for the comment!
I want to keep track of my scores next time! I think doing this as a kid helps me understand it more now. My son doesn’t have that benefit never having kept his own score!
it's a great idea and learning experience for kids too! let me know how it goes. You may like the free printable I put in the description for this
Very helpful and clear! Thank you!
so glad! Thanks for the comment!
Another great video Rebecca. I will look for a book in the description. I believe writing something down on paper helps you reinforce what you did or didn't do. Do they make an app for your phone that you can keep score with?
Yes it really helps me! I put a link in the description for this video both for a booklet you can buy, a free printable and also a free app for keeping score. I don't use the app just bc my phone tends to get distracting while I bowl
Haha I've been bowling many many times in my life. But when I was a kid my uncle or dad always kept score (because my alley was way behind on the automated scoring) . And then when I was old enough to do it myself they started doing the math for ya . So I never really understood the scoring until right now when my niece asked me why her numbers jumped after spares and strikes ( and I was talking out of my ass until I watched this video ) haha so thank you for making me look smarter .. great video!
glad it helped you!
I have two questios regarding scoring spares. After the spare you take the next score be it 0 or a strike. If it is a strike you would get twenty points for the spare frame? And if you get a spare on the 10th frame, do you get one more roll or not? Thank you
Yes if you get a spare followed by a strike that would be 20 added to your score. If you get a spare followed by a zero that would just be the 10 added to your score. In the 10th frame if you leave pins on the first shot and then pick it up for a spare you get one extra shot after that. If you leave pins on that extra shot you don't get another ball to try to make that spare. I hope that helps! Thanks for the questions
When I was young, I use to keep score for the adults. Usually got tipped. These days I use Pin Pal or lane Talk if it is available.
I thought you add wrong starting on 5 and going back to however far, but I learned how to add because of some of recording of you frams 1, 2,3 and 4.
Glad it was helpful! Bowling math is interesting!
Back in the 70's we kept score by using grease pencil. This system was called telescores
love it!
Every time after a strike it goes a spare, why? How do I score it in case if I did an open frame after a spare?
When you make a spare the score is 10 plus the next ball you throw. So the first ball in the next frame will be added to that 10. If in the next ball you get 5 pins down it will be 10+5 and add that to the score you already had. I hope that helps!
In frame 4, 7+1 is 8. Frame 4 + frame 3 = 56. There was no spare or strike in frame 4. Srry, just a bit confused
Hi Lloyd! The program that I used is a little confusing as the spare marking looks a lot like a 1. In frame 4 it's actually 7 spare. Hope that clears it up!
@@RebeccaBowls Yep, I mistook the spare for one. Thanks for clearing that up.
@@lloydwarden3758 I may remake this video in the future using a clearer program. Thanks for the comment!
@@lloydwarden3758 it took me a while to see it too.
Yup. Still needlessly complicated. Counterintuitive rules give me a headache.
How about you each take a turn and write down how many balls it took to knock 'em all down? Whoever took the least throws wins?
So you don't get a guarantee of 30 shots over 10 frames?? That part could be explained better at the outset of the video. I thought you always got 3 shots per frame...then move onto the next frame??
only 3 shot opportunities in the 10th frame. All other frames you get 2 shots
Scoring system in bowling is too complicated for most people. Only real bowlers understand the system.
it definitely can seem complicated. But when you break it down anyone can do it! Even me, who is not too great in math :) Thanks for the comment!
Before automatic scoring systems, all bowlers knew how to keep score. It’s not that it’s complicated to learn, it’s the fact that most league bowlers are no longer forced to learn.
nah man it's not hard, you just need someone explain it to you once they do you get it. Not rocket science.
frame ten when you don't pick up the spare on your first shot that it game over right you don't get another shot in the tenth frame @@ShaferHart
Didn't get it, not clear enough.
Basically a spare is 10 plus the next one shot you throw. And a strike is 10 plus the next 2 shots you throw
Too fast for the beginners to understand
