      I may do one this year. With my growing season being so long and having most of my trees in pots, many of them don't have the best fall show. I know that 'Hot Blonde' is supposed to have amazing red fall color but for me it goes from yellow-green to crispy brown in early December. Hopefully this fall is different 🫰.

      I gave away most of my "Oridono-type" maples. I still have my large 'Oridono nishiki' and my 'Cotton Candy'. Honestly, I don't feel like there are major differences between these types so I'm sticking with what I have left. Both that I have are heavily variegated with 'Cotton Candy' having some darker pinks in the early spring.

    Hi, do you prune your maples and how often? Will it weaken the trees if they are young plants?

    • @maplecollector4398
      @maplecollector4398 Місяць тому

      Yes. I prune them when they need it. There isn't a specific "How often?" though. I recommend pruning young plants in late winter or spring when the buds begin to swell. It actually promotes more vigorous growth, in most cases

    Great stuff as always! How much sun is your Amber Ghost getting? I'm having a hard time siting mine into a sweet spot. Last year was too much shade and it was largely green through spring with somewhat of a faint bronze casting into this time of year. The reticulation was still rather attractive but I didn't get much in terms of color. This year I think I over-corrected, it seems a bit sun stressed as the majority of the leaves display as a dark amber (almost a purplish-brown, hard to describe) but not yet exhibiting actual burn. Our KY spring this year has been opposite of yours in that it started early and temps have been well above average. I have not yet seen any of the pink-coral, or pastel spectrum of color that I'd expect from the flushes in this cultivar but am hopeful!

    • @maplecollector4398
      @maplecollector4398 Місяць тому

      Amber Ghost definitely has a wide range of possible colors that it will display. You can try moving it to an area that gets different sun exposure or just hope that it flushes out with the color that you're want next year. Unfortunately there isn't an exact formula for this.

    Hey Maple Collector! Thanks for the advice on some maples for my yard. I’m having some trouble with my Japanese maple fire fly, it’s burning and not looking very good. Should I transition it to full shade? Should I repot with better soil?

    • @maplecollector4398
      @maplecollector4398 Місяць тому

      The shade won't hurt it. I won't recommend reporting a tree at this time of year without physically checking the soil and pot myself. Does the soil retain a lot of moisture?

    • @nategrad9832
      @nategrad9832 Місяць тому

      @@maplecollector4398 its a mix between cheap potting soil and natural soil from my yard. I’m learning a bit more about soil and perhaps a soil with better drainage would help it along with throwing it in full shade. When I got this tree in spring I didn’t know a lot about soil, but learning more. My red saber from Mr maple is killing it in 4 hours of direct sunlight in the same type of soil.

      Most of my trees are watered once a week. My seedling containers are watered about 3 times a week. I used to mix my own soil but now I just use Kellogg's Organic Soil that I get from Home Depot. It has the perfect drainage for Japanese maples.

I've had cutter bees in the past and as long as something isn't going to harm my plants to the point of their demise, I welcome all nature into my garden. I have a few training for Bonsai-amateur only but I so like their habits, their quiet seasonal growth and the early spring appearance. There is much you can do with these maples. Thank you for your time.
