This is the video that introduced me to Goshiki Shidare and Toyama Nishiki. I actually happened to grab both from MrMaple on their Limited Sale recently. Super excited for them.

You have some great trees. My Goshiki is still very small, but nicely variegated. My rainbow grows 12” a year and only gets variegation on a few tips eat h year. The last 2 you showed look wonderful. I’m lookin them up now.
Another variegated tree that seems to be finicky is Umigumo. I had one for 7 years that was never really white. Moved 3 times. The last time seemed to do the trick. Used to get morning and evening sun. Now it gets 11:30-1 sun.

Yes, Ukigumo seems to be more effected by climate and doesn't seem to have, what I consider as reversion. Where I live, it has consistently white variegation. I did another episode on that cultivar. In hot humid climates, the variegation is not as heavy and nearly non-existent in some years.

Very helpful, thanks. I need to prune my Rainbow next spring.

Great video. Have a few variegated maples and will look for the reverted branches. Prune anytime or wait for winter etc?

This practice doesn't apply to most variegated maples. Only a select few that are considered "unstable". Other types are conditional and require different methods to encourage variegation. Many are dependant on the climate.
The best time to prune out reversions on the "unstable" types is in spring, after they flush and/or in late summer.

Thanks for the video..Could you explain why you don't fertilize your variagated trees please..thanks

The reason that I don't add any nitrogen fertilizer to my variegated maples is because it stimulates the production of more chlorophyll in new growth. This causes the tree to revert back to solid color, losing its variegation.

What is the name of the last one?

How does light exposure affect the variegation?

    • @maplecollector4398

It changes the color but doesn't effect the amount of variegation. This is true for the "unstable" variegated maples but those in the Oridono nishiki group are actually effected by sun exposure.

Do you have to cut the whole branch? Could you instead remove the leaves that have reverted and see if the second flush of growth is normal (variegated)?

In my experience, the new leaves will just come back as reverted leaves and take energy away from variegated branches. Unfortunately, you have to remove the entire branch.

Interesting and thanks for the reply. Are you a member or heard of the UBC maple forum?

Just curious because this was just a topic that came up.

The entire branch needs to be cut back to the trunk? Or just cut back to the next available variegated leaf?

    Why do they revert?

Would you mind typing the last two maples names? I don't know if you said the last maple's name in the video or not. Didn't catch it.

The last maple was Fujinami nishiki and the one before that was Taimen nishiki.
