50's Rola Alnico 12" Guitar Speaker - SOUND CLIP | Clean & Dirty
Very cool old Rola Alnico Magnet speakers, originally from a hammond organ cabinet I believe they are about 10/15watts each.
They have a touch of damage to them because they're so old but the damage has been repaired and they sound great and the sound files prove that.
They're a bit on the dark side and remind me of my Celestion Alnico blues but much smoother though they have that twang of an Alnico speaker.
Speakers were in a Corodvox 2x12 with the back open for the demos.

    When I was a kid, I bought this amp around 1984 - and man did it SUCK. This is one of the WORST Marshalls ever made. I spent all my hard-earned money on this piece of sh$t. This was the beginning of Marshalls that suck - until the Plexi Reissues.

    I just watched maybe 3 of your videos today and one of the things i appreciate most is all the palm muting and raking you play, I play pop and skate punk rhythm guitar and couldn't do a lead to save someone's life and I'm not interested really 😂😂. The usual amp demo is one power Chord and then 30 minutes of leads. I'm a very simple guitarist because I'm also mainly a drummer but guitar tone is my jam 😉. Keep up the really well done demos and playing 👊

      Sorry man, its actually quite a bit slower than I normally would if I was playing or dialing in a tone for a client. Plus I didn't want this video to be an hour long. I've got individual videos of each of these amps with more detail possible. Really just showing the range and variation of the knobs and how they affect the gain, which is stuff I don't see anybody doing on here really.

    great sounding demo: sounds perfect, how a guitar is supposed to sound like. Nice! I'm considering buying one. is there any difference in this one you played in the video vs the one which reads triple rectifier solo on it?

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 14 днів тому

      Yeah there is a difference, the multi-watt (ones with 100 or 150watt instead of solo) are generally brighter, tighter and more aggressive. Though I don't know if that really makes them "better" just different. Some of my favourite tones I've gotten were on the older "solo" head models. There are some other differences like FX Loop and switching and per channel rectification instead of global. My advise, unless you're really into modern metal and are quite particular about rectos an older "solo" three channel one will be great.

    @brandonjackson5865 Місяць тому

    People know that a lot of their favorite heavy albums , the guitars were through 800s , they forget or ignore the fact that all those tones were made by slamming the front end with an OD or boost and in a lot of cases, OD, or Boost with an EQ boosting and cutting specific frequencies. Either that or the amps were modded. Also the albums tones were probably lower gain tones doubled and stacked to create the wall of sound and interpreted massive gain . People who have never played an 800 go into it probably expecting modern gain because they’ve only played modern amps also that 800 tone they were fantasizing were finished recorded, engineered and produced tones, through really great sounding speakers and cabs . If you have the place to be able to dime an 800 they get fairly saturated but at ridiculous volumes, I used to play through my uncle’s old 50 watt 800 and it was basically a clean amp at the volumes I could tolerate and even playing with a hard hitting drummer rarely ever got either volume past 4 it was just stupid loud. They are awesome amps but they aren’t gonna deliver enough or the type gain some are expecting.

    Tubes don't affect tone enough to be heard. The speaker is what makes the most difference. Vintage or expensive tubes are snake oil as proven by Glenn Ficker.

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording Місяць тому

      100% vintage or expensive tubes are mostly snake oil, but tube types 100% can be heard.. though it is quite subtle. Mostly about feel, I love Glen but when I found out recently he only recently started playing guitar I started taking his guitar comments with a huge grain of salt because in my experience guitar tone almost always comes down to how it feels to play through. But I’ve experimented a lot with different tube types in this amp and also my REVV Generator and they can do some nice subtle shifts to an amp. Some amps really just like the tube they were designed for, others sound great with many just depends what you’re after. I liked this amp best with KT88s at least in my initial trial. I’m going to do a tube shootout on this sometime soon. The KT88s have a bit more low end, smoother high end and was a bit looser and less compressed but not by much.

  • @scottdunn2178
    @scottdunn2178 Місяць тому

      @@acrylicrecording My point is you are mismatching the impedance of the output transformer by using a tube type it wasn't designed for. Sure, you can bias other tube types to work - but these amps generally sound best on the EL34's they were meant to run on.

      I'm generally a huge fan of cranking the presence.. especially on a lot of other amps but sometimes in the room with this one there is a crazy amount of ear-bleeding fizz that comes when you've got it up loud, somewhat depending on your speakers. Also I find in the mix usually guitars work much better a bit darker than a guitar player would like the play through. So really my comment about it was just letting people know that some cool tones can be had by turning it down.

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording Місяць тому

      My general thought is that the 2525h is a very sweet and great amp but really was designed to be played by ones self not really in a band/loud setting. The power section totally just starts to compress and get small when you try to crank it to compete at drummer volumes. If you're playing something that isn't hard rock or metal with a controlled drummer you could get away with it but the 100w has sooo much more punch and power though a little rougher with more grit around the edges. 2525h is smoother and sweet 2555x is aggressive and angry and a bit more fire breathing but the high end can be a bit ear bleedy and fatiguing.

    I found its happy place is having the Master around 6-8. I start there, adjust the others. Yes, it's loud... you need an attenuator. I'm also not a fan of Tube Screamer with Marshalls. I like them with Fender. With the master that high, you really don't need dis pedal, maybe just and OD pedal. But if you must.... Boss SD-1 or MXR Distortion +, is the way to go.

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording Місяць тому

      Yeah I hear you, when I had an attenuator this and my Vox AC30TBX and Ampeg V4 were the only amps that it seemed useful to attenuate and crank the master but not really useful enough to keep the attenuator IMO. An SD-1 and Tubescreamer are extremely similar circuits if I recall correctly besides the tone control on the SD-1 especially if running into a very distorted amp. But I totally agree with the tubescreamers are better with Fenders and SD-1s with marshalls. I gotta get me another Distortion +!

    • @brandonjackson5865
      @brandonjackson5865 Місяць тому

      @@acrylicrecordingthey are a similar circuit but the SD1 cuts more bass I think and it’s mid and high frequencies are shifted up and the top end of the sd1 is more aggressive. The thing I love about an SD1 into a Marshall is that percussive clank you can get under palm muting.

    Does a 50 watt JCM800 with the same gain have a higher volume for home use than a mesa rectifier?

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 2 місяці тому

      Would really depend on where the master volume is set and the sweep or sensitivity of that knob. Both will sound pretty bad at "bedroom" levels and all of my demos of amps are at band volume or sometimes a bit louder. The master volume knob on this JCM800 is very sensitive there really isn't a "home" or bedroom volume setting, its almost nothing then basically quiet band volume. I think rectifiers can get a bit better at lower volumes but because of the fizz in the FX loop they do not sound good at all quiet unless you bypass the loop (at least on anything pre multi-watt). Hope that helps!

    Really nice comparison. Not a bad sound in the bunch, but I think the 2204 was leader of the pack personally. I'd happily own any of them though. Have you ever tried a Laney GH50L/GH100L? Those are basically Lee Jackson modified Marshall 2204/2203 circuits with some tweaks here and there. They cop a fantastic 'Marshall' tone for way less money and have plenty of gain on tap from a switchable extra preamp tube if you want it.. Definitely worth checking out.

I had both for a while really wasn't a fan of the voicing of the dual, seemed to not do the cool thing the Tiny Terror did and its only benefit is that it was a bit louder for band use. While I love the Tiny Terror, its quite limited (which is also its strength) and the OR15 is kinda everything i liked about the terror but with more flexibility, though the voicing is certainly different. I also greatly prefer the OR15 over the OR50 reissue I had.

    How does the tone stack (minus the extra switches on the 2000) compare from the JCM 800 to JCM 2000 I have a feeling they are the same but have never had both in the same room.

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 2 місяці тому

      They're similar-ish I suppose maybe a bit more range on the 2000, but I might say its a bit closer to the weird as heck tone stack on the Jubilee, perhaps right in-between. I don't have the 2000 anymore but it was both more tweak-able than the 800 but also not as many sweet spots, with the 800 almost everywhere is a sweet spot.

    Not for me this one. It's too fizzy

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 2 місяці тому

      Might be the speaker/guitar/mic placement both the speakers and guitar are quite bright and sizzly, mic placement could be adding to it as well. I wouldn't call this amp overly fizzy in the room but I hear what you're saying i'd just refer to it as some EL84 ORANGE SIZZLE but not for everybody.

      I'd say not as much sizzle as an orange and much less compressed, but similar for sure. Much stiffer feel than most oranges i've played.

    Perfect old school punk rock tone at @3:18 Whas it guitar (humbuckers) straight into amp then cab ?

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 2 місяці тому

      Pretty much yeah! The exact signal chain is in the description. I think this amp works so well for punk rock-type tones and a bit beyond but not quite for "metal". I tried a few boosts with it before filming, but it didn't really need them or like them, maybe I was trying them with the gain too high in retrospect.

      @@acrylicrecording yeah that’s what I thought ! Great for good Adolescents tone eheh Hmm maybe for metal it depends what pickups and an eq and something to tight it if modern is needed, but with not so much gain, for not so modern I think of Jim root tone, very open, strange to listen alone but awesome in a mix

    I find it strange that Marshall made 3000 of these in 1987 but around 10,000 people in UA-cam comments managed to buy one when they were first released 🤔

    Thank for the tip I bypassed my effects loop and my Three Channel sounds about 10 times better. My rig has so much more bass than yours though even with the bass set below 2.

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 2 місяці тому

      No problem! I used to hate rectifiers because I didn't know how to dial them in at all and that loop bypass is one of the main things to do to learn the amp. Having the output control around noon is essential level matched to bypass. As for the low end, I'm running a tube-screamer pretty much the entire video i think. The sm57 is in a brighter spot, and doesn't really pickup too much low end, plus i've got it like CRANKED stage volume so that evens out the low end a bit with the highs, the volume knob is the tone knob!

    I prefer the more mid forward in your face attitude of the dual here over the triple. Which is shocking because you’d think 150W would sound bigger than 100W but in this case it sounded thinned out and scooped in an odd response attitude that didn’t hit the mark or seem as musical under a microphone. Thanks for the comparison I really appreciate it and will be going multi watt dual instead over triple like I’d planned.

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 3 місяці тому

      For sure the Dual in these examples sounds a bit more "musical" possibly because I set the tones on it first, then matched them on the triple. Could have gone completely the opposite if i did it the other way round I think. thw 150w watt is less compressed and has was more response too it.. sometimes too much. I'd compare it to the 50w vs 100w 5150s lower watts is tighter and compressed and more focused but less dynamic response to your picking dynamics and less dynamics especially in the low end. In these examples the compression on the low end of the dual is VERY nice. The biggest difference is in the room and under the fingers, way more difference than under the mic just listening back, so to me its much more about your personal playing style and what kind of response you like from your amp, tight and compressed/focused or open and very dynamic/responsive

    Excellent play through man! Since you demoed the Rev G triple, which one you prefer? And does the MW triple get you that NU metal sound that Rev G triple does?

    • @acrylicrecording
      @acrylicrecording 3 місяці тому

      Hey hey, thanks for the kind words! Man its so tricky with these rectos, I think I've had 5... so far... 3 channel dual, 3 channel triple, Rev G triple, Dual Multi, Triple Multi, and its almost always the previous amp I sold that I think might've been the best.. haha. Since I didnt have them at the same time I'm really not sure which one I prefer, but feature wise the multi-watt FOR SURE wins, more fx loop options, actual clean channel, better channel cloning ETC. Listening back to my other videos of the REV G It certainly sounds great, different maybe tighter and smoother, but also hard to tell because I used to dial rectifiers soo differently when i had that one IE presence up vs presence down. I think my fav one might've been the regular three channel triple i had. For NU metal tones, the multi is deff easier to get those tones but honestly any recto will get you in that zone for sure.

    • @mark_iic
      @mark_iic 3 місяці тому

      @@acrylicrecording I agree, it’s tricky with these rectos for sure! I currently own a Rev G modded by ground zero and I’m searching to buy another triple rev G stock. I also have a Badlander 100 that I managed to make it sound like older rectos but way tighter, cutting some frequencies with a parametric EQ in the FX loop. I think Badlander wins the way I set it up. I also use Mr Scary mod to boost the gain and it works amazing.
