Awesome demo! Does this amp take pedals well? I was thinking of getting one but didn’t know if it could handle distortion or not, I usually play 90s alt rock stuff.
Hey man, turns out this one had some interesting mods done to it so I can’t exactly say about a stock one. But my experience with this and other similar Sunn amps is that they take gain pedal QUITE well. So go for it, but give it a good try before you buy.
I have a Sunn 1970 4x12 cabinet and not for sale but The Ampeg VT 22 I toted around for years using this cabinet is insane ,Ampeg wont break up at 119 decibels and dosnt like pedals at all
Interesting, I've got a v4 (vt22 head version) it definitely won't get you any distortion but will get some compression driven up high. I think mine was totally fine with pedals though. But I mostly use it for bass.
Yup using a swollen pickle if I remember correctly, details should be in the description. Amp on its own does not have much gain at all. Also it turns out this one was crazy modded and not particularly in a good way. Still sounded sick though!
@@acrylicrecording If you get them Gold Lion Your transformer might not be able to handle KT88s but you should be able to handle KT66s in the place of 6L6s Thats what I run in my Twin Reverb no Problem.
@@ALtheDoctorWho I mean KT66 are basically a 6L6 variant, KT88/6550s are a different beast for sure. But I've tried some JJ's in it and it was fine, I even emailed marshall and they said it was fine. Its even go basis points and settings for each tube.
@@acrylicrecording JJ are very reliable tubes however they are sterile compared to a triple gather of KT tubes. The difference in headroom will be noticed immediately.
@@richardmartin5992 They're great!! but they've gone up SO much in price there is a lot of other great ones out there for much less. I wouldn't spend the money on one now.
What do you have the tone knobs at and what settings (including the internal knobs) do you have the pickle at? I have a Solarus combo and a swollen pickle and really enjoyed that tone
Man I wish I could tell you but I can remember at all. It was one of those special editions Donnie something or other pickles which.. actually sounded waaaay different than a normal pickle hmm..
Hahahaha, no worries man! But yeah this sucker is craaaazy loud! Damage your speakers loud if crank it up full! So I used some fuzzes and stuff but it has such a huge and open tone.

I love this era of Sunn amps and own 5 or 6 (can't remember!) Your demo shows EXACTLY what they do!!!
Thanks for the kind words :)
The Sunn Solarus was my very first guitar amp. I had a pro audio guy, convert it to EL34's. It actually had a killer sound. Man ...memories.
9:20 sound is CRAZY nice !! 🤩🤩🤩
I have the Fender 400 PS.
It's basically the same amp with a different logo on it. Had it since I was a kid in the early seventies. WHY?
TO ROCK!!!
DANG that thing must be loud as heck!!!!!
Damn, that tremolo sounds great
I have a Sunn

Awesome
mine doesn't really shine till 5 or 6...
Are you using a fuzz pedal or was that all from the amp?

Can't beat KT88s 👍
For real, I'm going to put some in my Silver Jubilee when I can

What drive pedal is that at the 7 minute mark? It's a perfect compliment to that amp!
Klon KTR!
@Acrylic Recording thank you!!! You just sold me on the idea of getting one ;)

@Acrylic Recording I know of a great builder that's doing wonderful clones. I'll be picking one of his up 👍

Let the man demonstrate the amp for dog sake.
