When Opportunity Knocks: Springbok hero Charl Marais
Become a Patron here: www.patreon.com/FrontRowRugby
At the start of 1998 Charl Marais was behind Naka Drotske in the Free State Cheetahs pecking order. Drotske himself was behind James Dalton in the Springbok hierarchy. Marais moved to Cape Town, made the Western Province and Stormers sides and approximately a year later made his Springbok debut against Italy.
Many will say Charl was not supposed to be the guy who made it. He made his Springbok debut at the age of 28 - an age where some Boks had actually already retired. But through grit and determination, Marais not only made his dream come true but his grit, determination and powerful play made him a fixture of the Springbok team in 2000.
Charl also famously featured in a magnificent win over the All Blacks in 2000 at Ellis Park. Here you can hear from Marais in his own words how he defied all the odds, fulfilled a boyhood dream of representing his country and played a key role in several important victories.

Peter says: I love the Springboks and rugby is one of my favourite sports. Although as a sports journalist I am supposed to remain neutral, I always like to point out that before I became a professional, I was just a big fan! I hold a Masters Degree in International Journalism so at least you know I should be able to ask a good question or two!

I have to say that I have never been a fan of teams handing out hammerings to each other. I don't think it reflects well and can be so humiliating, it takes huge guts to come back from. I remember we played a team at Under 18 and they were worse than useless. In truth and reflecting back, I give them massive respect for turning up. They knew what was coming, had none of the skills to match us, yet still went out and played. I truly regret the behaviour of some of my teammates sky diving over for tries etc. I can guarantee you that a couple of them went missing when our chips were down in different games and we needed someone to step up. Yeah, its not a good memory reflecting back.
