The SECRETS of Precision E-Bikes Fort Collins Colorado! (Shop Tour & Interview)
This E-Bike Shop is CHANGING the Game! (Interviewed Josh Kerson at Precision E-Bikes)
ua-cam.com/video/6ehVIQVbhPc/v-deo.html
Precision E-Bikes isn't just another bike shop; they're carving out a unique space in the rapidly expanding e-bike market. They focus beyond selling e-bikes; they position themselves as experts and educators, helping customers navigate the often-confusing world of electric bicycles. This approach likely involves a deep understanding of the technology, a commitment to personalized service, and a passion for matching riders with the perfect e-bike for their needs. They may specialize in specific brands, offer custom builds or modifications, and likely provide comprehensive service and repair options. Precision E-Bikes likely differentiates itself through its specialized knowledge, hands-on approach, and commitment to building customer relationships, fostering a sense of trust and community around e-biking in a market flooded with online retailers and big-box stores. This "secrets" approach suggests they have a unique selling proposition, perhaps a specialized fitting process, a focus on a specific niche within e-biking (like commuting or off-road), or a deep understanding of the local terrain and rider needs.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”

    The Customer is the price maker. And the seller is the price taker. Apparently some people have forgotten this business "truth". All we have to say is no, I will wait on the purchase until I find a "fair" price. Once the price point is met a decision to purchase can follow.

    Direct to consumer is where the future of most bike sales is, no doubt about it. But people will always need local service as well as some people really need to try a bike in person to get the right fit. I think the brands/manufacturers should offer direct to consumer, but ship from the closest dealers in stock inventory rather than their own inventory to that particular customer. That way the manufacture makes their cut and so does the local bike shops, sort of symbiotic like they are in fact actually in business together which is not the case now. This will require better and or different stock/inventory management. Each dealer should also be allowed to promote their current in stock inventory direct to consumers along with whatever marketing the manufactures do. There is nothing worse than buying a bike online from an independent bike shop and then having to wait for the bike to get shipped to the bike shop you bought it from and then now shipped from that shop to you. Not sure why they don't just drop-ship the bikes straight from the manufacturer now in that case? But they don't. The manufacturing of high end bikes have lost touch with consumer reality and they need to get back into promoting bikes to the average Joe and making sure that direct to consumer experience is top notch from a far. They will sell far more bikes if they do this while also helping to keep local bike shops in the loop and supported so they remain in business to be able to get the repair and maintenance business that is also needed which of course the manufactures can not provide. UNLESS they develop their own nation wide chain of sales, maintenance and repair shops and do away with local bike shops altogether, which is always an option for them as they are in the driver seat since they make the products that the bike shops sell. Things could in fact get much worse for local bike shops should the hurt get too large for the manufactures to have no other choice but to cut the bike shops out altogether, which may in fact already be happening now......Luckily for the local bike shops is that there are in fact millions or even billions of bikes that will still need maintenance and repair far into the future even if that bike shop never sells another new bike ever again, not to mention the sales of aftermarket parts and upgrades.

    • @IKnowAGuyBicycles
      @IKnowAGuyBicycles 2 дні тому

      You make some good points. The trend is going to get worse for brands that keep cutting out the local bike shops. Thanks for sharing!

    • @Joel-McConnell

      @@IKnowAGuyBicycles I really do think brands/manufacturers should keep working with local bike shops but alter the way direct to consumer sales are handled as stated above so that everyone can benefit from such sales which have to be growing along with all other internet sales which have been also growing over the years. I buy all my parts and supplies online also.....I bought my last two bikes online, but from actual bike shops not the manufacturerer which often has higher prices anyway. I suppose that is how the small shops get the sale by being cheaper. But I am someone with a full on tool set up and knowledge of how to work on my own bikes. I live very rural so this is mandatory for me. But as stated the bikes were first shipped from the manufacturer to the bike shop and then to me, this needs to change to give a better experience to the consumers not to mention save some costs in the supply chain......It seems one of their dealers somewhere in the nation would have such a bike in stock and could then ship that bike to me quicker and also benefit from that sale if it happened to be initiated through the manufacturer/brand directly but shipped form the closest retailer with the bike instock. In the case no such inventory existed then the bike should be dropshipped from the manufacturer directly to the consumer and a commission paid to the shop that initiated the sale. I hear that some bike shops inventory is tied to manufacture inventory already anyway so how hard can this be to get right? Get all the shops onboard with this idea at least for the online sales.....But I suppose some bike shops are more aggressive about getting the online sales directly themselves as well so somehow there needs to be a more collective mindset for this to work well. We are all in this together sort of an idea.....I guess it gets complicated trying to handle multiple brands as well as trying to compete with other bike shops online. But the manufacturers could in fact set the terms under which shops must participate in this idea but why then would other brands also agree to such when they are all in competition with each other as well? I suppose there will never be an easy answer to this......

    I just bought this exact same bike, condition almost brand new. There's a lot of play up and down in the suapension seat post and I'm not sure if that's normal, broken, or just needs adjustment. I can't find anything about that seatpoat anywhere. It's strange because the brake levers still have the plastic wrap from when they were new. The owner never peeled it off. I can't wait to ride it.

    • @IKnowAGuyBicycles
      @IKnowAGuyBicycles 4 дні тому

      I would check the treaded cap to ensure it’s tight. Also if you pull the seat post out, there is an adjuster bolt on the bottom that takes an Allen to tighten it. Both if loose can make it feel sloppy.

    • @RedeemingLight
      @RedeemingLight 4 дні тому

      @IKnowAGuyBicycles Thanks. I actually got curious and took it apart last night and the elastomer felt like a solid piece of plastic. I think the elastomer hardened over time and shrunk, leaving no more compression and that's where the slack came from. I'll either get a rigid seatpost, or I did see ebay had some of the elastomers for that, but being so old who knows if they are any good. Other than that this bike is almost brand new. The guy told me it is a 2007 but my own homework says it's a few years older than that. It probably spent 19.5 years out of the last 20 in a suburban garage, and the rest of it on the bike path.

    What’s the typical Gross Profit for bike shops? (Not including Operating Expenses).

    • @IKnowAGuyBicycles
      @IKnowAGuyBicycles 5 днів тому

      Determining a "typical" net profit for bike shops is challenging due to the wide range of factors influencing profitability, including location, size, product mix, operating efficiency, and local market conditions. While gross profit margins on bicycles and related goods can range from 35-55%, net profit, which represents profit after all operating expenses are deducted, is typically much lower. Industry estimates suggest that average net profit margins for bike shops often fall within the single-digit range, perhaps 3-7%. This relatively low net profit margin underscores the competitive nature of the industry and the importance of careful cost control, efficient inventory management, and diversified revenue streams (including service and repairs) for bike shops to achieve sustainable profitability. Furthermore, factors such as economic downturns, supply chain disruptions, and increasing competition from online retailers can significantly impact net profits, making consistent profitability a challenging but achievable goal.

    As a lifelong bike shop mechanic and sales guy, I dislike Canyon and REI. REI is a fake coop and Canyon made their money on convincing people that what I do to keep a roof over my head doesn't matter. I hope they both go under. REI needs to repent for their lies and union busting. If you want to get your computer bike fixed by an underpaid high school kid, go for it. • @IKnowAGuyBicycles

      To get the most value, eBay still has the largest reach, but their take is 15% off the total (taxes and shipping), which is a massive cut. So, I place my logo in the pictures and sell the same bike with the same images and description so they will see both listed on my website at a lower price in a Google search. The variation is the 15% markup for eBays cut. If you are willing to ship, use BikeFlights for the lower shipping cost. I go over some of this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/oRalNjjpMNo/v-deo.html

    When the price of viewing bike races gets to be too high the sport will really start to decline worse than we have seen ever. Sponsors will stop throwing money at teams if their stuff isn't going to be seen. Discovery+ wants you to pay $30 a month now if you want to watch cycling races. People are dropping their subscriptions like a smelly bag of shit. Top that off with lots of races are cancelling because the cost to run them is too high. Looks like the road I'm heading down is just sitting in front of the tube with a case of beer and watching whatever is on the local TV channels. I'm sick of being gouged.

    Great Video. I always watch your channel because you provide a great historical perspective and a more "Northerner" sort of view of a bike shop. I knew that winter was going to be slow up in Reading PA, but I had no idea until I hit my first winter. Keep up the great work. I also think that starting a brand new bike shop is so much harder than buying out a bike shop with existing customers and existing accounts.

      Thanks for watching! Yes, winter is the only time you can relax and plan out your season, so utilize that as much as possible. Find new ventures to support your shop and cycling community with a low lift and high profit. Doing suspension may work (as mentioned in your video), but the costs of tooling, training, and parts are a huge lift and will take a very long time for a return. Especially if there are already shops that only do that service, you can leverage them. (Dirt Labs, Longmant CO.) The Used market is the best direction where you can sell online across the country where they are in season. That is the basis of my business, and I don't need to work for Walmart in the winter. lol Feel free to let me know if you ever want to collaborate or do an interview.

    Fair points made! I am DEFINITELY still getting used to being on camera. My personality lends itself more to the information than entertainment😅. I appreciate you pointing out the P2 group that I was unaware of. I'm hoping to create resources centered a bit more on garage mechanics looking to take the next step, as that was the path I followed. Enjoy your videos!

      It’s tough to be on camera! But it will get easier. Plus, the editing is a killer for me on mine. I'm glad you're enjoying them. Let me know if you ever want to collaborate or do an interview.

    Hi. I have a few questions regarding setting up a triple crank. I have a vintage Sugino VP130 (c. 1987) that was setup as a double, but I would like to convert it to a triple. I have what I need - the recommended 3PL spindle (122mm), a Suntour Alpha 5000 GT triple front derailleur, a Suntour Alpha 5000 long cage rear derailleur, 6/7 speed chain, etc. I plan on using either a 52/42/26 or a 52/40/26 setup. My first question surrounds the granny gear's spacing. The spacing of the between the outer and the middle ring is 6.74mm. I've read that for shifting performance and cross chaining, the granny gear should be spaced an additional 1-2mm further inboard towards the frame (so 6.74mm + 1-2mm). Is this correct or is the standard spacing (6.74mm) best? Also, what do you do if chainrings don't have alignment notches? I'm using Sugino 130J BCDs without notches and ramps and pins. The big ring's alignment is clear (Sugino label pointing opposite/awat from crank arm), but the middle one's and granny's alignment aren't so obvious. Does finding the best shifting alignment just boil down to trial and error?

      Unfortunately, my memory of those is not the greatest. Even seeing it in person, it's most likely going to be trial and error.

    If you love riding in the summer, you’re better off working for an existing bike shop as an employee. Standing up fixing bikes all day day after day is taxing I can’t imagine it doing it over 40 hours a week anymore 40 is about my limit and I can still ride..

      It definitely is a physically demanding job. And finding time to ride yourself is almost impossible in season. Great point, thanks for sharing.

    fully deserve it as well as a few other industries. Prices got jacked up during shortages...then they were artifically held high to boost the bottom line and they would point the finger elsewhere as to the cause. There are many similar stories of unprecedented sales and revenue highs that they segued into corporate bonuses and continued record profits. As for the bike market, and i've said this in other comments, when a "mid price" bike is $7000-8000, they're nuts. It's a bicycle!! i'll take the used car instead.

    When I was going to take over the shop. My Uncle in-law (who owned a small business) said, "Don't do it. It will be much easier and more stable income being a manager at Lowes". Well, I did. 4 years later we are going strong...and yeah being a manager at Lowes might be the better route for some people.

    My addition... Niches come and go, you gotta love all bikes to be successful. If you're a good mechanic, just fix bikes, don't sell them. There's a massive shortage of good mechanics so you can clean up.
