I had a 2001 honda cbr 600 f4i that had cam chain tensioner issues. At the time, the forums said it was a common issue and fixing it wouldn’t last long before going bad again. They claimed that it wasn’t doing any real damage and to run it if you can handle the noise since there wasn’t any real solution. I did just that and beat it hard for 2 years without any issues. It’s sad that they still have these issues all these years later.

Between my two NC's and my mates we have done 300 000 miles without any engine issues. Surprising to see this with your bike. They are renowned for their rock solid reliability. You must have a lemon.

Well Joe, with all your trouble with that honda I am leaning more now towards a elec glide with a evo engine for my upcoming 6 month mc camping tour in the spring. Good for you that you have so many resources to call on when you have those troubles. Hope to see you some where on the road this summer.

You've replaced the tensioner twice? What about the chain guide on the other side of the chain? There's something not right here. I'm assuming you've looked at the parts guide on Honda Parts Direct website for a breakdown of everything.

Bunch of cheaper 22/23 KLR's out there. People buy them and can't find sixth gear so they sell them with hardly any miles.

Sorry to hear your having more trouble. I wonder if your getting good replacement parts. Honda's been designing cam chain engines since the sixties and they have always been dead reliable. Something just doesn't add up.

I saw a sunset like that this past thursday night. I don’t know that I ever saw a sunset that was that rasberry red clouds against royal blue sky.from here in just north of Pittsburgh Pa. That was thursday night, September 26,2024. I was at my grandson’s baseball game.. Many people, including myself, turned away from the ball game to take pictures of those raspberry red brilliant clouds sky .. I have never seen that color sky before. I wish I could put the picture on here.. I am surprised that a Honda would have repeated problems. I myself do not go more than 75% of red line maybe it’s time for a salvage motor. If you can find one out of a crashed bike with low miles that didn’t sit outside at the salvage yard. The reason I say buy a motor out of a crashed bike is, that meant it was running when it was crashed. .If there is a bike in a salvage yard that has not been crashed, then what unseen problems does it have that put it into a salvage yard. you could probably pick up a complete virgin motor for little more than an oem motor rebuild gasket kit costs these days.. I helped a friend of mine that had a Yamaha venture royale that broke the camchain.. we pulled the motor and were compiling a list of things we would need, and things that we should replace while we have the motor apart… it was actually cheaper to buy a 37,000 mile complete motor from a local motorcycle salvage yard for $400. That motor actually ran better than the engine. It was in the bike. All we did was replace the spark plugs, check the valves, change the oil and filter. I actually still have the motor that came out of his bike that needs a cam chain..

That’s crazy! I have heard of a few cam chain tensioner failures in the 4 years I have owned mine, but not 3 in a row on the same bike. You might want to investigate further and make sure there isnt something going on with the timing chain that is breaking these tensioners. I have close to 50k on my NC700 and I personally know 3 others with over 100K miles on theirs and none of us have had cam chain tensioner problems. Good luck to you!
