The Shocking Truth About Everest’s First Winter Climb – Was It ILLEGAL?
If you think climbing Mount Everest is extreme, imagine doing it in the middle of winter. The freezing temperatures drop even lower, winds whip around at over 100 miles per hour, and the air is so thin that even standing still feels impossible. Currently, 34 expeditions have tried to climb Everest in winter. 5 were successful, 15 climbers stood on top, and 7 have died.
And yet, one daring controversial team of climbers decided to take on the ultimate challenge: reaching Everest’s summit during its most brutal season.

    In my opinion , James Messner was jealous that-A, the Polish Climbers were in spotlight and B, someone beat him to the punch. And he used every bureaucratic trick he could find to invalidate the Poles. This was nothing but plain old jealousy.

    Messner sounds like an asshole. As ridiculous as it is to climb up Everest in the winter in general, having done the thing they should have gotten full credit for it without any question. And Poland was very much under the thumb of the USSR at the time and needed the boost, making Messner even more of a jerk for causing so much drama about it.

    I agree with Hawley! Even though it was presented that the climb and achievement to the top of Everest was done outside the winter season, what the climbers endured during their climb was over the top dangerous. But they did it. They were the first to make it through such grueling and extremely dangerous conditions. No one had the right to try and take that away from them. Instead of making and issue out of the time line or extension of two days the climbing community should have held fast together. These people were of their own and should have been celebrated by the whole climbing community. The Polish climbers did something incredible and insane and made it back alive! If they would not have succeeded no argument would have come up. They would have been praised for what they tried to do. But they did make it and should have celebrated by all, which they eventually were after 2 years. I am truly amazed at what these climbers strive for and how they do it. It's a fire inside them that can only be doused alittle with each successful feat they accomplish yet grows stronger for the next mountain to defeat. They are in a class all of their own. They are incredible and beautiful individuals.

    Is Hannelore still sitting there on Everest? If so, she has been frozen in time, a guardian of that summit, and a reminder of fragile mortality for almost half a century. Since 1979... Truly sad and heavy. Fact check: Yes, Hannelore Schmatz is still on Everest in the last place she sat down at, by camp 4, after summiting Everest in 1979. She, like many others, died on descent.

    Should climbers who die on Everest be considered heroes, or are they victims of their own ambition?

    • @Yvetchkian
      @Yvetchkian 4 години тому

      Victims of their own ambition. I don’t view them as heroes. They are not doing this for anybody else but themselves. That’s the definition of selfish not heroic. By all means do what u wanna do, but just cus u do doesn’t make it a heroic act. The true heroes are the sherpas that help these climbers. Not only do the Sherpa’s set the path but they assist these climbers to the top. They also save distressed climbers, that’s heroic! Same can be said for the climbers that help others in distress.
