Yes, especially when climbing K2 without the support of a full fledge commercial expedition, ie the way K2 was usually climbed 30-40 years ago. See my comment below.
That wasn't just any climb either... the North Face of the Eiger is no joke! At the time she was pregnant with Tom (Ballard) who died on Nanga Parbat in 2019.
Selfish indeed. The Brit woman left what appeared to be two toddlers without a mother while she stupidly chose to climb a dangerous mountain. Horrible mother.
I know that I may get attacked by the bleeding hearts but I don't care. If my mother had me only to knowingly risk death for a title, or a challenge, leaving me an orphan, I'd despise her my entire life.
I really would advise against anyone with minor children participating in extreme sports, it’s irresponsible and selfish to risk your children growing up without a parent just for a hobby.
Humans amaze me. There are people with bipolar illness who struggle to stay alive every day. And then, we have perfectly healthy people out there who are actively looking for ways to die.
Maybe it's because they're not perfectly healthy. Do you think climbing everest is a healthy activity?? I think you have to be pretty mentally unhinged to do it myself
As much as a compassionate person as I am, I cannot gather enough compassion for people that go to such dangerous places and lose their lives. It’s all about their personal ambitions and ego trips and it doesn’t add anything to the rest of us. But I do feel for the children that were orphaned in such an unnecessary way.
@@jet6110 This is such a dumb statement that people make so often. Do you really think the odds of dying in a car accident are remotely comparable to the odds of dying on K2?
It’s no mystery why K2 takes the highest toll on its summiteers in general. The “easiest” route up K2 is via the Abruzzi Ridge, which is steeper and far more technical than any of the primary routes up Everest. Given the grueling, exactly nature of the entire route, there is no such thing as a quick retreat down K2, which is the northernmost of all the 8000 meter mountains , making K2 on average, the coldest, with the least stable weather, the highest winds, and storms that are stronger, last longer, and are harder to predict. The margin for error is much thinner on K2, and when mistakes are made, especially on descent, people die. For women these margins can be even thinner, because generally speaking, they are at a physiological disadvantage to men in terms of strength and stamina, even though they can be just as proficient at technical climbing and decision making.
Its not cool being a parent of young children and climbing mountains like these. I admire the balls of anyone that tries to climb K2, and its a free world for all to follow their dreams, but im sorry, if my mom or dad died climbing a mountain, and left me without a parent, id be mad at them. Its unecessary, and something that should be done when you have zero responsibilities to anyone.
I do wonder what effect it had on the children. Hargreaves was pregnant with Tom (Ballard) when she climbed the Eiger. He died on Nanga Parbat in 2019.
I understand wanting to conquer a goal I get it!! But if you have children under the age of 18 and you’re doing this, you are selfish!! and shameful!! for doing that to leave your child or children, fatherless or motherless and for God sake both!! That is a level of selfish bullshit that I cannot believe!! Anyone can justify!.. there is nothing heroic nor honorable about that at all!….People if you’re going do this! Or anything very high risk!!.. do it before you have children do it before you’re married, don’t do this to people that you love it is wrong!! And yes, selfish!!. No child deserves to go through that no wife or husband deserves to go through that get this out of your damn system!! Before you settle down. Or make the decision not get married or have kids!! The old adage getting your cake and eating it too is very very rare!! As a adult or a wife or husband as an adult to make an informed decision about such things, but children have no choice they either have parents or they don’t have parents. I can’t think of anything more cruel than doing this to your children.
Why do you pretend they left children ? Mauduit, Barrard,... did not have children I wonder if you watch these videos only to leave hainous comments about female adventurers, showing a great perversity.
Madness. People risking and throwing away their lives to what end. Human life does offer a chance for perfection, spiritually. What’s happening here is just sheer lunacy.
I am amazed at the arrogance of some of these climbers. K2 does not care what nationality, medical issues, or desires are. Held by climbers. K2 has existed for eons and cares nothing for humans and their desires. Always respect the mountain.
I think all mountaineers are a little crazy!😂 To want to go where your body is shutting down, to go anywhere there is a death zone, is crazy!😂 My body was shutting down from heart failure. My thinking got fuzzy. To do that on purpose is insane. I respect the drive to see the amazing views from the mountain tops but i have never wanted to do it myself. We all live & die in our own ways. It would be a boring world if we were all the same!
I bet it’s beautiful there but I can never figure out why people want to climb a mountain when climbing has killed so many. If there’s a 95 percent chance you’re going to die doing something, maybe don’t do that.
This is nothing but lunacy dressed up as a 'challenge or achievement'. K2 is one of the world's most inhospitable and dangerous mountains. A person who dices with death by climbing into these merciless terrains does so with full knowledge of the risks and hazards that await them. RIP to the women who have died on K2, and all the others who have lost their lives to this most merciless of mountains.
Excellent narration and analysis. A sad story, but one worth telling well, as a testament to the brave women and men who perished on the 'Savage' mountain. Thanks!
Probably thinking what an idiot and pointless this whole ordeal was as she lay there freezing. (First Lady) It’s only tragic for the surviving family members back home. It’s pure selfishness.
The story of Cecilie and Rolf are especially sad when you consider Rolf insisted to go first because he said he wants to be the one to secure his wife during decent but noone else. If cecilie would have gone first the falling down serac would have sent her to the abyss instead of Rolf. It a very disturbing fact to know the mountain would have taken one of them regardless
I know its about tragedies, but it would be nice to mention Wsnda, that climbed together with Ballards, she went up before them and before them descended.
same could be said for all the fathers who climb and do the same thing. Theres a massive double standard in climbing. A woman who dies is viewed way more harshly than a man. Alot of fathers climb and die. That is also craziness and selfish. So men can do whatever they want? And not care about kids he's left behind. That wife is now without a father to her kids.

I know Eiger is 3.3K but doing it pregnant is selfish. Why stress out a fully formed but roughly 2 pound baby? Spinal flexion/extension (crunching movements, i.e. sit-ups or mountain climbers) should be avoided while expecting. 🤷♀️
The mountain doesn’t discriminate. In general women take safety more seriously and I would prefer an experienced woman mountain guide if I was a climber. What are they trying to prove? That they can reach the summit, like the men climbers.
Then why are you watching this???. Without adventurers we wouldn't have crossed oceans, discovered new lands, fauna & flora. We wouldn't have taken out first steps into space. Those that follow our standing on the shoulders of giants. These people are not chasing death, their chasing life. Alison just got really unlucky, an unexpected storm literally blew Alison & 5 American climbers off the ridge before the bottleneck. Her son Tom Ballard was a brilliant climber & he took on an even bigger challenge, a winter ascent of Nanga Parbat in 2019. Tom, like his mother, died doing what they loved.
