      For the ones who died doing something they loved - I'm expecting the same fate. I'm 79 years old, so by the law of averages, I don't have too long to go, so I'll probably die doing something I love - living at 83 years of age - or more than 79 in any case!

    • @miketeague4327
      @miketeague4327 8 днів тому

      None of the stories in this video broke any "rules" or "laws." They just did not follow some common sense guide lines, or did not pay attention to their "gut." The motorcycle over the pedestrian walk way I would venture to bet he knew about the cross wind, but did not want to disappoint the crowd or the event promotor, and thought he could pull it off. The motorcycle into the net had a flimsy plan, and no back up. He was just supposed to "grab the net." There should have been a back up net below him, just in case. Again no rules or laws broken.
      We have rules and laws against DUI, yet it still does not protect them or innocent people from the consequences of bad decisions.

We do value life. We are human and prone to error and sometimes make mistakes in our judgement of our skills, or just make a bad decision in the "moment.' I could go on for hours of bad ass people, friends of mine, who were on point and very skilled at what they do, who calculated every possible outcome and it was do-able, but they just missed the mark, by inches. It does not mean they dont value life.

    Intriguing video

  • @Jamesiah08
    @Jamesiah08 20 днів тому +4

    the explanation given for the last disaster for butch laswell does not sound right: the amount of missing the ramp looks like being due to a miscalculation of the motorcyle speed, the distance between the two ramps and the first ramp angle, considerably more than how much a wind disturbance could distract his jump. the wind would most likely distract the jump by a couple of feet or yards maximum, unless there was a tornado or hurricane there at that moment which does not seem to be the case based on the video, like how much the flag shakes, whereas the height difference between his position above the target ramp and where he was supposed to land on it appears to be more than 5-6 yards; plus there is no lateral distraction from the ramp and the motorcycle seemed to be within the width of the target ramp while a random wind would likely side track it away too and not just push it ahead above it. In simple words, whoever designed this setup didn't seem to have done the right math and physics with the jump speed, ramps distance and angles and perhaps just blamed it on "a sudden gust of wind" to get away from lawsuit, insurance costs and so on. the wind scenario, although not impossible, sounds very unlikely compared to the miscalculation and bad engineering hypothesis ..

    • @miketeague4327
      @miketeague4327 8 днів тому +1

      Yes the ramp could have been a little wider on the landing side and now a days when you watch any free style motocross jumping the landing ramps are wider than the take off ramps. So some hard lessons were learned. But if you look at the giant American flag flying over one side of the walk way it is a fairly larger flag and it takes a steady wind of more than 18 knots to make a flag that heavy( the material is not light weight) to stand out and wave the way that one was, I noticed right away. If you think about it from this perspective. The buildings on both sides of his run up was in the "shadow" of the cross wind, so it was not able to influence him, or be noticed during the practice runups, until he was at the top of the ramp when he was exposed to the full strength of the cross wind, and it was not gradual. Just another possible aspect of what may have been a contributing factor.

    • @Jamesiah08
      @Jamesiah08 8 днів тому

      @@miketeague4327 good observation, the target miss looks to be more in the length than the width of the landing ramp; he would not get any benefit from the landing ramp due to his too much height above it even if there was no side distraction, because of the too short distance between the ramps.

    • @miketeague4327
      @miketeague4327 8 днів тому +1

      @@Jamesiah08 True. He did look a little bit long. But even a small transition near the bottom of the ramp would have been better than flat ground. That could have been from a little too much speed on run up, and, or, with the strong winds it is hard to tell from the cameras angle if the strong winds are a direct cross wind, or at a bit of an angle also slightly coming from behind him, which would have pushed him too far.
      In the early 2000" Seth Enslow did a record attempt of a ramp to ramp distance jump up in the high desert, and over shot his landing, with devastating consequences. He was close to, if not higher, vertically and hit flat ground. One of the mitigating factors for Seth in my opinion was his forward speed, was much faster. The bike was also pretty stout as far as the frame and suspension. Afterwards in an interview, he mentioned the wind had picked up and it was a tail wind. He said he noticed it as soon as he left the ramp, and said you could see him sticking his leg out to try and create some drag to slow down, but no joy.

    • @Jamesiah08
      @Jamesiah08 8 днів тому

      @@miketeague4327 then they should either calculate better and use precise simulations before, or just forget the idea and not risk such losses if they cannot make a safe setup; unless they are just after show business money and don't care about the nature-fighting gladiator's life and safety which seems to be the case.

    Several of these "stunts" could have been done safely. Some of the people did not have the experience to do the stunt.The rope swing was obviously done by people who did not have the knowledge or skill to do some basic calculations. The wingsuit into the bridge was due to deviating from the original plan, at the last minute. I skydive and BASE jump and have taken myself off of certain jumps that did not sound like they were going to go awesome. I have chose to climb down off of objects due to not liking the wind conditions or the landing areas. They can be done safely. I have seen an interview with Jeb about the bridge incident. One of the things he said was that on the way to altitude in the plane, Dewayne made a comment something to the effect of, "what ever happens... dont worry, or dont be sad, or it will be ok." I dont recall exactly, but Jeb said at the time he did not know what to make of it. After the tragic incident Jeb realized, thats what he was talking about, that he was going to try and take a much more risky line. Stick to the plan. The rocket guy, Mad Mike, was obviously an amateur, and did not have an engineers understanding of the forces the engine would produce, or do enough testing to discover that the placement of his life saving parachute would be deployed and damaged on take off. Again home built AMATEUR, not a pro. I also ride and jump dirt bikes. I remember the jump over the pedestrian walk way when it happened and noticed the GIANT flag standing out and wondered why he was going through with the jump, specially cause it was a cross wind.
    Not all of us thrill seekers have such a disregard the for safety in the hi risk activities we choose. But I tell most people who say what I do is dangerous, that LIFE is dangerous. People get killed on the highways all the time, for a ton of reasons, whether its DUI, or victim of DUI, some ass hat texting and driving kills somebody, yet none of the keyboard warriors commenting on this thread, drives by an accident, then pulls over and gets out of their car and says, "Im never driving again."

    This really reminds me of the fools that get killed climbing up half dome. I never have been a daredevil. I think there’s other ways of living life and living it safely. I used to ride motorcycles. Dirt bikes. And until I went down one time. That was the last time I sprang my foot so bad that my toes were swollen. And my whole foot will turn black and blue. I have a safe hobby I wiped down on a motorcycle in 1971 and picked up a guitar in 1974. I’ve been playing guitar for 51 years. That’s a safe hobby. I haven’t put a scratch on my body in 51 years ha ha I’d rather be safe than to be sorry. The age of saying is a pound of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Be safe live life safely not dangerously. Have a great day wherever you are. And live life to the fullest but live safe.👍❤️ I feel for those ones who have died. They’ve died by their own mistakes and their own foolishness. Nature and calculations only give you one chance. The other one is death.☠️💀 so sad but let alone so stupid. I feel I don’t have to prove anything to anybody. Somebody’s always trying to make a big impression.😖😡👎🤷‍♂️ I wonder why🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️😖

      Please stop referring to these accidents as tragedies: they are the predictable results of foolish choices! Fear of heights is there in our DNA for a reason and we ignore that fear at our peril: as night follows day sooner or later something WILL go wrong.

    My two oldest sons are pro Freestyle motocross riders and boy has that sport evolved! It's still very dangerous but the safety features available to the riders today are so much better. But any minor miscalculation can cause horrible injuries and even death. People who practice these sports are wired different from the rest of us and I have witnessed that first hand, their tolerance for pain, their fearlessness and cold calcutions, their drive to do more. It's an amazing group of people to be around but I still get really nervous when I watch them ride. Surprisingly the number of riders we've lost over the years is lower than one might think. It's not a sport to dabble in though cuz it can kill you if you don't know what you're doing. RIP to all the extreme athletes who paid the ultimate cost reaching for the ultimate thrill 🖤🖤🖤

    Evel Knievel didn't die.... and there wasn't all this extra technology back then- they didn't even have electronic ignitions; you had it with just the points and change the condenser, they had magnetos but for some reason they ruled those out...
    Evel Knievel just broke every bone in his body 10 times a piece.. but he lived to tell the tale and feel the pain for the rest of his life

They are just normal people who are truly dumb for thinking they are invincible... guess what you weren't and ask yourself was it truly worth the risk... your life. I have no pity for people who do these stupid stunt's.

    Anyone else notice that's exactly what happen to Evil Knievel's rocket? It too was steam powered and the chute opened early. Lucky for Evil the chute didn't tear away. Thrill seekers or glory seekers. Would these people do these stunts if no one was around to see it?

    • @miketeague4327
      @miketeague4327 8 днів тому

      Some will some will not. I for one do what I do purely for me and not to show off. I do not need or seek an audience, and most of the other "thrill seekers" I choose to surround myself with, are pretty humble and dont do it to show off either. Believe it or not some people operate "normally" when they feel challenged, we all like a challenge, and one of the ways to find that, for some of us, is to have your life in your hands.

    "They" aways say "s/he died doing what s/he loved" --- as if that makes anyone feel any better about the person dying! Useless words that help no one! These people are adrenaline junkies who want a LOT of money for showing that they can defeat death, until they don't! But they NEVER show us their death! Like it will bother us! It COULD help prevent others from trying fatuous things that they will eventually die doing -- probably sooner than later!

    Climbing ropes are dynamic, that is they stretch to reduce the shock of a fall. That both reduces the shock to the climbers body and lessens the chance the rope will break as it’s loaded. I suspect those rope swingers didn’t accommodate for the dynamic nature of their rope. Like the previous swingers they obviously should have done test using a 165 lb weight of some kind before attaching a human to the rope.

    Can we make something clear? 10:00 ... Mike believed the earth was flat, which makes him a moron. He wanted to fly a rocket to about 1/7th the height I have been to on an international jet using technology similar to the water rockets I had as a kid in the 60s. So apparently, I have been higher than Mike (excepting whatever cocaine and peyote he was ingesting) and it cost me less. Not only that, I visited one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen and got laid. Mike went 1/7th that height, and died like a bug under a fly swatter. Poof, he went.
