In this video I am sharpening two different sets of planer blades using a Bridgeport knee mill and a 1 inch die grinder wheel. Normally you would use a special sharpening machine or surface grinder. Here we use only a Bridgeport, small round stone, and a hand sharpening stone. This way of sharpening planer blades could be used on jointer blades also.

    Thank you for making this video. This is happening just as you described with my Lincoln SP-250. It welded perfectly as you explained, but then all of a sudden, it would not weld smoothly at all. I thought it was me as well. I have been trying to figure out this issue for a little while now. I tried everything and was just about to order a new liner. Thanks again for taking the time to record this fix!

    why not something like a skillsaw instead of a short life angle grinder? Is it adjusted up and down independently from the blade height? So, you have to set it each cut? if it is, why not mount it to the bridge that caries the blade?

    • @Haystack461
      @Haystack461 7 місяців тому

      I do agree it should travel with the saw blade. The angle works great and you can put a wider cuter on it. As I said in previous comment I recommend using a 9" angle grinder as it has more power and is much more robust.

    Nice machine. What device are you using to turn it off by the magnet?

    • @Haystack461
      @Haystack461 2 роки тому

      I use a magnetic reed switch which drops out the self holding drive relay when the magnet on the blade passes by the switch. I am using the normally closed contact on the reed switch in series with the ground leg of the relay coil. Basically when you push the momentary button for the feed drive it pulls in a relay which has one contact in parallel with the on switch so that when you release the on button the relay holds it self in. The momentary off button is in series with the reed switch, both are normally closed so that either one can stop the drive.

    You should be running 2 tubular felts before the rollers. The 1st one nearest to the roller should be a dry and the 2nd should be a wet cleaning solvent. Not sure why they don’t send these two very simple but incredibly necessary items with all MIG units.

The solvent felt isn’t all that necessary on hard wire. Typically meant for Dual-shield. Nice mill and fast, be nice if husk could go on engine side to for ease of one man operating

    • @Haystack461
      @Haystack461 3 роки тому

      Actually what you are talking about is a "right handed" mill meaning the carriage advances past your right hand as you face the saw. This is a "left handed" mill as the carriage advances past your left hand as you face the saw. A right handed mill has the engine on the opposite side of the husk or the operator side. In the case of a right handed mill the operator must walk around the motor and drive linkage of make a bridge over the drive shaft. The beauty of the left hand mill is you can mount the motor behind the mill which clears the front of the mill for travel from the sawyers platform to the tailors end.

    With your equalizing sprocket rod configuration why use two rams when a single ram would do ? I looked into the acme rod method of lowering/raising but the larger acme rod is prohibitively expensive. When you considered the linear actuator method, what were your findings on this such that you went with twin rams instead ?

    • @Haystack461
      @Haystack461 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the questions. First I tried using acme screw rods, went to a lot of time and trouble to make all of the bearing holders and linkages, it failed to raise the head. I am sure it could work with better design. The screws bound up and I could not keep them in sync so I gave up and went with the hydraulics. I did two so that I could make the equalizer system much smaller and simpler. The head is very heavy and it was easier to install two pistons and not worry about the stress of cantilevering across the arch. It has worked quite flawless. The only down side is the hydraulic lift uses a lot of 12 volt power, more that the charging system on the saw motor can put out. I run an onboard 120 volt charger. My carriage drive is electric so I have 120volts on the mill and it is not a problem to have a batterie charger built into the mill.

    That small grinding stone by the time you get to the other end surely it has worn down by at least 0.001 inch. This is not the case or did you compensate for the wear ? Like your channel, subscribed.

    • @Haystack461
      @Haystack461 3 роки тому

      You may be correct. I did not find a problem with stone wear. I used lots of oil and cold air. If there was wear it was linear across the length of the blade and was adjusted out on installing the blades. I am sure a surface grinder properly set up would do a better job, I have a surface grinder is is just to short. Having said that the blades cut well and the planer makes nice boards.

So many of these machines only sharpen the face and the users are adamant on face grind only. but cooks videos insist that the back of the tooth should be lightly grazed as well. And that the gullet skim is over rated about stress cracks. I’d like to make one like yours where I could do face grind in one pass then a back grind only in the second pass then do gullets next sharpening. Is that possible to touch top back of the teeth only without lowering too deep for gullets ? I’m thinking by lengthening the push rod a bit so it would miss the face ? Thank you
