I remember always waking up at 2am to a blaring DVD menu screen, almost all movies were like this. But The Simpson Movie menu screen was so clever. It was Homer Simpson passed out snoring, in his underwear. Just you and him in a deep sleep. And every now and then spider pig would silently swing through.

The 70's were a big trend in the 1990's because that's when all the 70's kids had become successful adults (producers, actors, directors, writers, etc). The 90's were essentially the ascendancy of the boomers. For the same reason, we're seeing heavier 90's nostalgia now. Artists typically create what they know best.

Wow, can’t believe you brought up dance movies and didn’t even mention “Save the Last Dance.” My sister made me watch all those movies dance genre movies! Also for cheerleading you forgot the other most import one-“Bring it On.” Those two movies started the genre! Need to research a little bit better…

So this is a great video in so many ways but unfortunately the actual information at its base is just pretty far off base from someone who was 13 in 2000 and graduated high school in 2005its okay, you qere a toddle and at your oldest in elementary school, my recollection of the late 80s and early 90s are similarly skewed/offbase. A couple thoughts as they pop up: Harry Potter wasn't a risk at all or created to be a franchise or anything. The books were crazy popular and came out in 1997 (UK) or 1999 (US) which is when I started reading them being 11 like the main characters. The first 3 were out quickly then there was a lull before the 4th book, when it was released in July 2000 people preordered the book and lined up for hours for midnight releases and parties except in Decatur IL where USATF Junior Olympic Nationals was that year where I was conpeting and there was a whole pallet up for grabs at Sam's which was unheard of. I wouldnt even earn up for my event ubtil I finished reading it my coaches were pissed. Point is the books were a huge thing and why they made the movies had nothing to do with existing movie trends. Fanfic blew up prior to the release of the 4th book in 1999 and early 2000 because people were desperately waiting for the next one, it was my first soiree as a middle school girl into the while thing. Twilight was the same except the books were shitty repackaged fanfiction esque BS romanticizing stalking, DV and toxic masculinity to teenage girls, with a healing of toxic purity culture (which was VERY ontrend for the late 90s early 00s) written by a middle aged Mormon housewife. I was into college by the time they got popular and ebfore the mocies came out thank God but did read them to see what the fuss was about.... yuck. They started the vampire/supernatural teen media craze. Prior to that you had 80s darling Anne Rice and the last big movie in the genre was 1992s Interview with a Vampire. Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, etc. all came from the late 00s early 2010s Twilight craze and was not popular at all in the late 90s/early 00s. HP book mania turned into movies was the OG in a trend that started with popular mostly YA book series being made into movies, Twilight and Hunger Games are the big ones but tons tried to profit off a retrospective formula and flopped like Divergent and a bunch of late 00s to early and mid 2010s teen aimed media after my time as the target demo that I'm not as familiar with. Bring It On was part of the mid to late 90s very very early 00s teen centered movie. At the time a divide wasn't discussed but there definitely was the ratty crude sex centric male focused stuff like Road Trip, American Pie and The Hangover. You also had the more female centric stuff like starting mid 90s like The Craft to late 90s stuff like 10 Things I Hate About You and She's All That to Thirteen and then IMO the last great one was Mean Girls. The NLOG (Not Like Other Girls) thing was what we strived towards. It wasnt a bad thing for most of us girls we were proud of it thinking the alternative was being "vapid sluts" (yes I regret calling other women that now profisely but at 14 in 2001 I didn't) and clones of Paris, Britney, etc. The other big genre was indy type stuff like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, I <3 Huckabees, Lost in Translation,l and Broke back Mountain. Foreign movies like City of God and Amelie were a specific subtype of this. Juno and Napoleon Dynamite were a more teen centric subtle. Manic pixie dream girls, "nice" guys (describing what it does today but still used as a compliment), hipsters, etc. we're everywhere in the 2000s. Beach movies were never a genre. What you're describing is a bunch of vastly different movies from different genres with different targets that just happen to include some part of the setting being Beach or ocean adjacent. Forgetting Sarah Marshall and 50 First Dates were quintessential 90s/00s rom coms. Blue Crush was very much so a NLOG teen movie intersecting with another 90s/00s trend, extreme sports. The Beach was shitty reality centric type horror. The Matrix came from the Simulacram concept plot wise but the aesthetic was very Y2K. Tech hesistance was becauze of the very real threat of Y2K which we all laugh about now because a lot of people in tech worked hard on. There was also the whole late 90s tech bust and 9/11. The Black Mirror tech/AI fear is much more a contemporary thing. I got my first cell at 15 in 2002 when I was working. Your call minutes were limited until after 9 pm my longterm BF had a different provider and I was constantly paying my mom extra for my part of our family plan. Also texts were 25 cents each and that was for a max of like 100 characters with T9. I didnt have a phone on a camera untip my Blackberry as an adult in 2010 and it shcked and disnt have a smart phone with semi useable WiFi until like... 2013 or 2014? My mom thought I was dumb for texting and paying for it. I didnt even have or use a digital camera or non dial up internet until after I'd graduated high school around 2006. So yeah those movies and themes weren't anti tech as we know it today, if anything people were way more pro tech and still charmed by its potential, it was more Y2K post 9-11 thematic fears mixed with a very, again late 90s and early 00s futuristic aesthetic donimating especially compared to the early 90s. The big thing influencing Blair Witch and the like was reality TV it was considered more authentic by early fans and was also super cheap compared to conventional production methods. The tide turned by 2005 but yeah we used to not realize it was scripted. Again media access and fandom wasnt a thing. X Men was the first big Superhero franchise boom since the campy Batman movies in the early to mid 90s. The first one was big but the rest absolutely bombed for a loy of reasons. Big studios wrote them off but the change in CGI from 1992 to 2002 was massive and since 2000s X Men showed the first big and what was at the time at least so relatively realistic and mature vs campy and children focused superhero blockbusters. Cable TV and reality shows definitely started changing the overall media culture by '98-'00 but being mostly pre WiFi and smart phones (ie. 24/7 universal internet access) still hadn't happened culturally and then of course being pre streaming meant mid budget genre types were big but without the oversaturation of options available you have today. Hope that makes sense, you're a great creator just off base about the big movie and cultural trends at the time.

coming from the spike lee, denzel washington and will smith dominated 90's Black cinema had become embedded in the mains-stream. proceeding from that, during the 2000's the spectrum of black experience available to be expressed thru cinema widened dramatically. from irreverent stoner laugh fests like how high (2001) to poignant tragedies steeped in realism like Precious (2009) we really saw an expansion in how black people were able to be portrayed.

I vehemently disagree. If there’s anything that needs to make a comeback, it’s the dance competition movies. Maybe not in the step up universe or even a franchise at all. You can center a lot of stories around dancing and there’s so many different styles of it that there’s almost an unlimited ways to approach it. Which is what we got with You Got Served, Stomp the Yard, Honey, etc. With more and more styles being shown and brought up (like Voguing and Waccing) I think the possibilities are even more promising in what you can bring to the table. Also very dismissive of it when it also gave us Adam Stevani (who plays Moose in a lot of the Step Up Movies and a fan favorite)!

I would love to see a fusion of Terminator Salvation and The Terminator. A war-themed horror movie. Essentially the flashbacks of the original fleshed out into a full movie. Every movie since T2 has only tried to be like T2, which is why I consider Salvation to be the third best, because at least it TRIED something new. It’s not hard, it’s rather simple. Just expand on the flashbacks, that’s it. I don’t know why Cameron has butchered his own IP.

The lack of self-awareness is one of The Mummy's biggest strengths. It's simply an unapologetic silly, fun adventure romp. Not everything has to be a self-aware, meta, irony-laden postmodern critique of its own medium. How tedious. For me, it's a comfort movie because I have nostalgia for the film itself, as well as the time period (born in 1991). However, regardless of nostalgia, I still think it's very effective at what it sets out to do.
