Nothing fills me with 2000s nostalgia like a good old fashion DVD menu.
From DVD menus, previews, to box engineering, a ridiculous amount of expertise and deliberate design was invested in selling the public on new forms of physical media during the 2000s.
What are the qualities, quirks, and merits of physical media during what is arguably the last era of its existence? Is there still a point to having a massive collection of DVDs and Video Cassettes when I can just rent Tokyo Drift on iTunes and watch it right now? Are there any strengths in physical releases compared to streaming video? Absolutely. Physical media, and DVDs in particular have artistic merit and valuable content beyond the movie itself. Before you even press play on your remote, you’re absorbing a powerful, deliberately designed, and sadly underappreciated form of art. Behold, the art of the DVD menu.

My greatest DVD menu memories are from the Platinum edition of Beauty and the Beast, though, as this was the first DVD we ever got in my family. It was one of those "Each menu takes place in a location of the movie" kind of thing. Anyone who appreciates a good DVD menu should see the IT Crowd's menus. The episode select from season 2 is a perfectly recreated mortal combat 1 character select screen, with each character being a particular episode. If you leave the menu open for about 30 seconds, it will enter the "game" and play out a fight between two characters, using moves inspired by moments from the show. Every menu on all 4 seasons is a different parody like this, and nobody's going to see them on streaming services.

I buy dvds not for collection- but because i want a physical copy of my very favorite and influential films and tv shows. I want to be showrunner so actually owning those shoes and films and not depending on the length of the contract whatever streaming service i have has with the copyright owner. Many shows and movies are not permanent staples on Streaming services and they jump around. If the film of show is important to me either emotional or creatively as an inspiration or for learning or all of the above combined- then i should have a physical copy. I just wish more people thought that way.

My favorite DVD menu isn't from any movie or TV show
It's the "Deuce" DVD about the band "Korn."
Why is it my favorite? Because the scope of it's features are massive. It has so many different features, like biographies of the fan members, interviews, all of their music videos, and just videos of them hanging out and messing around. Some you have to unlock by doing puzzles or figuring out combinations. The menu is great, and there's so many different areas that you can move to, so many that you can even get kind of lost. It's something that I wish more bands did. I definitely recommend it.

When I was younger, a teacher gave me & my brother disc 1 of season 2 of SpongeBob, and I was confused by most of the menu clips not being from episodes on the disc. This was made more confusing by the fact that I never saw any of the episodes those clips came from on TV. The Incredibles was one of my favorite DVDs as a kid. I probably watched the 2nd disc more than the first. It was the main DVD that influenced my love of filmmaking. It isn’t my #1 DVD anymore because it’s in 4x3 and skips a lot, but I’ll still keep it for the nostalgia. I remember the DVDs for the 90s sitcom Martin, and I found it fun to do a sort of “scavenger hunt” to find the clips they showed on the menus. I also love the menu for the Mr. Peabody & Sherman movie, because it’s a really creative spin on the animated clip show type of menus. It reminds me of what Warner Bros. sometimes did (ex: live action Scooby Doo-ology, Looney Tunes: Back in Action) where they repurpose animation assets in a fun way. The early SpongeBob DVDs also did this, and I love them for it. Not to mention that most of those compilations had exclusive special features.

Not to mention how much I loved it when DVD menus would do something wild or artistic within the constraints of the format. I remember my dad and I rented the Stir of Echoes special edition DVD, put it in, and a completely normal, no-audio still-image menu appears, as you call them, "Windows screensaver menus". I try to hit Play. Nothing happens. The highlight over the menu options begins to scroll up and down, but I'm not pushing any buttons. The menu glitches out in a fashion to make you think your TV is haunted, with clips of the film interspersed with original stuff, and the true menu appears, backwards text hand-drawn in the frost of a cold window, with "See" being the ominous play button.
That menu fantastically set the tone of the film we were about to watch, and I'll never forget it. I never would have had that experience if I'd simply watched it on Netflix or something, but now that menu is inextricably linked with the film itself in my memory.
The End of Evangelion's original Manga Entertainment DVD did something similar, but not nearly as subversive. Somber piano music plays over rapid cuts of material from the film as the text of the menu selections begins to deteriorate, decay, letters shriveling and falling away until the options are almost unreadable, culminating in a rapid-fire supercut of incomprehensible imagery that cuts to absolute black for a few moment before resetting. Absolutely chilling, and VERY indicative of the tone of the film.

Before sending you to the actual menu, it would show the lights of the museum slowly turning on until it revealed the T-Rex and then a text would appear on screen saying “Welcome to the Tour. Click here to start.”
After you clicked start, Alan Sylvestri’s EXTREMELY eerie score would start playing and you would be sent over to the main desk where the text would read “The Museum of Natural History” and each option underneath was treated as one of the Museum exhibits.

There is something so vvery special that 'they' managed to create with the DVD specification back in the mid 90s. I still collect dvds from the flea market, and I particularly enjoy the dvds from Warner Home Video, which characteristically have a dark themed background (with the Waner Bros logo), title of the movie and your classic choices, my favorites have to be the popular Production Notes from the film and the Cast and Crew information. Most of the time you can find the copyright screen on those parts of the menu and it's rather fascinating how well hidden the copyright screen can be.

The Memento UK 2-Disc Limited Edition is the greatest DVD Menu ever made. You have to take a psychological test as the character to get to specific features. There is an extra special bonus feature if you answer the right way to see the movie in Chronological order, taking up more than 1/2 the disc for one feature most people never see. I had to find a DVD Menu guide like it was a video game! Not for everyone but great immersion

Two of the best menus I've seen are the ones for the two Gorillaz DVDs. They make it so that you're exploring the band's HQ Kong Studios. On the main menu, clicking an icon will take you to a certain room and in that room, you can click on an object which will lead you to a music video or some other bonus feature. On the second one, a bonus video will be unlocked upon entering each room.
Another is the main menu for Season 1 of Angry Kid (a pixillation show made by Aardman Animations). The menu doesn't display all the options for you to choose and you instead have to wait for Angry Kid to write a sign which has where you want to go. It sounds annoying but it fits since the main character is an annoying brat.

The DVD menu for Sofia Coppola's beautiful film Lost In Translation, was a loop of live film footage of Tokyo at night from the roof or balcony of a tall building amongst other tall buildings. It (like the whole movie) has a really warm, organic, cozy feel. And they set that visual loop, to a loop of this song (I think!) from the soundtrack.
    ua-cam.com/video/Qoa83DR2zhc/v-deo.html
It was easy to let that menu just run all night.
P.S. I was 24 when I saw Lost In Translation in the theaters (a theater in my area that ran indie films) in 2003. I saw E.T. in the theater when I was 4. I never thought I'd be so glad to grow up in a time without internet or computers in every home (I knew one person with an Apple II in the 80's. My family got a PC in 1996 when I was at the beginning of the 11th grade) and smartphones in every hand. And actually as a teen and adult, watch and remember the shift from that time, of an adolescent of the 80's when technology was just starting to explode, to where we are right now. And now the love for retro (when I was a teen in the 90's I was really into what was 20 years before that time - 1970's style colors and aesthetic - retro!) NES and pixel art and cassette tapes, and the like. Technology has moved so fast from the 80's to now, that I feel like the barely over 4 decades I've been alive, has been like, 100 years. It's really pretty cool.👾

I have some Czech Pat & Mat (very popular stop motion series here in Czech republic) DVD'S and on them you can see the evolution of menus
aiF's DVD have still image menu but with three new songs composed by the same composer only for that DVD and ton of bonus materials in form of the filmography.
DVD 1-3 have also still image menu but with music from the credits and less bonuses (game filmography of the creator and making of)
4-6 firstly scene from some episode start playing and then it freezes and menu options shows up: play all, episodes selection, bonus materials: game, list of episodes (for some reason without the 4th season), photogallery and advertisment for other DVD released by the same company.
"Special" has the scene from the Ne episode on loop with same bonus materials from the aiF DVD (only two)
1-6 (reedition) + all DVD'S onwards has slightly different image from DVD cover, without any bonus materials.

I think DVD menus always got you in the mood for the film you were about to watch! The most creative were definitely the Harry Potter DVDs. My fondest memory was tied to the second movie which had that mini game on the second disk where you were driving through the forbidden forest and had to choose the right path so you didn't crash and get eaten up by the spiders 😂 it was actually incredible how much effort was put into such a basic minigame. The Lion King Special Edition DVDs were also amazing. Me and my brother loved the Virtual safari stuff in the first movie and we always anticipated the new Lion king dvds (that being 1/2 and 2) because the virtual safaris were such a cool novelty. Hell, even the Aladdin Special Edition DVD had its own version of it, though if I remember correctly it was slightly more open ended. If I could pick out another menu that I could say was terrifying was definitely the original DVD release of Jeepers Creepers 2. It opens up with the monster itself just popping out from the darkness, staring at you with its creepy ass eyes and then masks the screen with its wings, waiting for you to make a selection. When you started the movie he punched the lens out of the camera lunges at the viewer and I remember finding it scarier than the movies itself for some reason 😂. We all ofcourse left DVDs on if we happened to fall asleep or watched in anticipation when we were about to start a movie with the family. I think the last menu with actual effort i seen was with the 4k remaster of The Beatles Yellow Submarine on Bluray, where they panned the camera into the titular Submarine itself and repurposed footage from various establishing shots in the movie to make it seem like the Submarine was actually traveling outside of the windows. And all of the buttons on screen were menu options, which had an element of curiosity, as it was like when the beatles and old Fred were messing about with the buttons during "All Together Now" . Its actually kinda sad that we won't really have experiences like that anymore, with streaming being on the rise. I still buy Blu rays, although I feel as though they aren't quite the same on a presentation stand point.

The special features and other additional content were what I liked about dvd's. Obviously, you need a dvd menu to access special features, and a good, interesting menu just makes the dvd that much more fun. On the opposite side, cheap dvd's, especially of public domain material, had terrible, barely-functional menus. Those are fun too, but for the wrong reasons.

Don't forget hidden items and Easter Eggs in these menus.... it was always fun, when those were included (example: Lord of the Rings with the MTV Movie Awards Clip).
But i honestly appreciate the simplicity of a Netflix menu. No sitting through endless unskippable "legal notice" screens or ads. No waiting until the whole thing has loaded to even start the music.
I loved DISCS where the movie starts immediately and you could jump back to a menu, if you wanted.
But all in all...even though a lot of these menus were fun, i mostly saw them as an inconvenience.
The did however have the advantage of pointing out special feature that are usually quite hidden with modern streaming services.
And don't forget the most obvious advantage of physical media...no service can remove them, you don't need an internet connection for them and they can't be changed to censor or remove unwanted things.
