Pumped diesel furnace burner
Just a quick lash up to test my ideas on a pumped burner system using a mini gear pump to feed pressurised diesel to a standard boiler nozzle.

Rider Ericsson 1/8th Scale Hot Air Pumping Engine
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Рік тому
Construction of a 1/8th scale Rider Ericsson Hot Air pumping engine. Originally produced in the late 1800's for domestic water supply. The water pumped also served to cool the cold side of the cylinder and improved performance. Any form of heat supply coal, wood, gas or oil but this scale model runs on a spirit burner. Constructers in the USA can purchase castings but these are prohibitively ex...
Horizontal Twin Cylinder Steam Engine
Переглядів 24 тис.2 роки тому
My second steam engine and is a slightly modified version of a design by Julius De Waal. The plan is available free online and is one of many designs by JDW. I revised the eccentrics to make it easier to produce and added a hatch on the valve chest to make timing of the slide valves easier. There are a few errors on the plans but not insurmountable to resolve.
DC Sabre (1.5cc) test run for auction

This is my DC Sabre originally from mid 1970's which I have decided to auction so a test run was in order. Many parts are not original (NVA assembly, Prop driver and comp screw) but she runs and can still be flick started. Video for Ebayer's benefit.
Clanford Clan 0.24cc Aero engine

My first two stroke aero diesel engine and I picked a tiny one! Although quite challenging it was a very rewarding build. Small engines like this can be troublesome to start and run so I was greatly rewarded when this one did run! I admit that I cannot get a really smooth note from it but I do not intend to fly it so I am well happy it at least runs.
Gerry's Beam Engine

I started this project well over a year previous and finally got around to finishing it.. The plans are freely available and the designer is Gerry Dykstra aka OldBoatGuy on the HMEM site. I chose to use casting methods with machining to utilise recycling scrap plumbing as the material. even machined parts were from cast bars of the same. The only purchased Brass stock was square bar for the cyl...

This is a project that I originally started over a year ago and finally got back to it. It is very (cough) similar to the Blue Chick design elsewhere on the web and uses chain drives for translation and a power screw on the Z axis. It still needs some work but this is an early test run to establish feeds n speeds etc.
Vega V Twin Aero Glow Engine

This is my version of the David Parker V twin model aero engine from 1986 issue of Model engineer. Capacity 9cc. Approx 100 hours work machining from stock material and countless hours to master I may add! There are still carburation issues to sort but otherwise a finished project.
Vega V twin trial on one cylinder

Hit and miss Kerzel engine..finally finished!

Finally, after more than 18 months of on and off working on this project, she is finally finished. Flywheels are home cast aluminium with lead rims and capped with stainless tyres. Main housing was crude cast and machine finished for with cast iron liner. The original cast iron piston and rings were temporarily replaced, whilst playing with compression ratios, with an aluminium version and a vi...
Stirling 60 - variation

This is my version of Jeroen Jonkman's Stirling '60' engine. Jeroen kindly offers his plans free and you can find them at www.machinistblog.com/free-plans-jeroen-jonkmans-stirling-60-2/ I decided to make a single tier version and found an excuse to finally cast brass for the base plate. not perfect but I am more than happy.
Brass Casting - 2nd attempt

My second attempt to cast a brass base for my Stirling engine project. I did not record the first disaster. Not a perfect result this time either but workable and encouraging. By up-ending my home made kiln I managed to create an electric furnace and get to 1000 deg C in around an hour with a 1kg melt load. I really need to get my pouring shank finished for the next run though! Apologies for th...
Kerzel Hit n Miss Trial

After months of trying, I am finally getting this model engine to run, albeit for short periods! Before finishing the project I needed to know if it would run and it has taken considerable time finding all the variables that can stop it actually running. It sounds Hit and Miss even though I have not fitted the governor mechanism so there is still work to do. When it does run reliably I can work...

      No. It was all scratch built including the castings by myself. The plans for the bigger 1/4 scale version are on my GrabCad site. There used to be a supplier of the castings but not available in the UK

    Not much aluminum in cans. Try going to an engine shop and asking to carry away old pistons. They make great castings for model engines. Used transmission cases are also good.

    Answers to your questions, 1. oil feed is pressurized 2.I need to preheat with propane because I use a heavy oil.3. It is a cone or half venturi and I don't have a clearer picture. Best of luck getting a siphon nozzle working.

      Thanks for the info. My burner is running very well but I have to put up with the noisy compressor kicking in all the time. Not sure if it will do cast iron but then again I don't think furnace would survive well at that temperature. Cheers mate.

    Cast iron for cylinder liner and steel for the crankshaft. Some bronze was also used for bushings. Silver steel ( drill rod ) for pivot pins.

    it runs better than mine, not sure if both cylinders firing as one is cool. like the way you did your carbs, seems to rev. up and down well not sure why you are unhappy

    • @creast56
      @creast56 7 років тому

      I am not sure what you mean by both cylinders firing as one??? As for the carbs, it didn't respond as snappy as I would like and after running each cylinder separately I knew there was more potential response in there.

  • @SteveWithnell
    @SteveWithnell 7 років тому

    Really nice build of the Vega. It looked in the video that you used aluminium for the cylinders instead of EN8M as specified? I had thought about doing that, but I couldn't see a cast iron liner in your version. Be interested to know if you managed to resolve the carburettion problem or if you have flown this motor.

    • @creast56
      @creast56 7 років тому

      Thanks for your comments. The cylinders do have Cast Iron liners as I didn't have much success doing DIY case hardening on the first steel versions so I went more traditional. I did improve carburation but have not flown the engine. It would be a travesty to crash it :-). It now sits on a display unit.

    Nice job creast!! What did you use for the ignition system? I'm getting ready to build one of these engines and looking for different viewpoints. Thanks Warren

    • @creast56
      @creast56 9 років тому

      Hi Warren, It was a long haul for me to get the ignition small enough to fit in the base and be reliable. I ended up using the HT supply from ot40.com/cdi_ignition.htm but not the PIC based trigger system. I wanted to use a hall effect switch triggered by a magnet on the cam gear. The HT coil was home wound and is based on that used on Jan Ridders Blokker circuit (ridders.nu/Webpaginas/pagina_blokker_vonkcircuit/blokker_crcuit_frameset.htm). I did try his original circuit but it was not suited to the Hall effect switch which won't work on 1.5v. The blokker coil is fine but too much soldering can loosen the terminal legs so I wound my own. I also used some circuitry to just deliver a quick pulse to the thyristor so there was no chance the coil was permanently energised. For testing purposes I started with a car coil but that is almost as big as the engine!
