A local service for communities along the line. In the Pendon period railways provided a range of local services and facilities for people sending or receiving goods by rail. These were served by stopping freight trains, that dropped off and collected vehicles. These were called `pick-up goods trains’, and were a leisurely exercise serving all the stations on a particular line. This train, the ...

Never, never get into a game of cards on a race train!
The voice of experience we wonder? 😉
My mam used to have a a brick in the outside wall of her house with the words “miners strick 1926” scribed into it,presumably before it was fired.Alas, she has now passed and the new occupants have had it rendered,so it’s now lost
Many thanks for sharing that info. A shame it was rendered over.
I know it's not necessarily the right area but I feel this could be overdubbed with the theme of Last of the Summer Wine or Dvorjak's largo movement from Symphony no9. This just feels so beautifully bucolic and reminiscent of a simpler time.
Thank you @OllieTattersall for your comments and suggestion, maybe when we produce another Drivers view we can incorporate some extra effects. thank you for watching.
It seems to be a general rule that the longer the railway company's name, the less cash it actually had.
You could well be right! Many thanks for watching, we hope you enjoyed the video.
Obviously the loco does not have a coreless motor ! And sounds as if it is in desperate need of some decent 12v DC motor lubricant !!!!
Thank you again for your observation, @railwaymechanicalengineer4587 . Another of our much viewed and enjoyed videos. We hope you too enjoyed the visual experience of seeing the Vale from the drivers cab.
The New York Central, had trains carrying coaches and sleepers[Pullmans],to various points on the system! One train, could have coaches and sleepers for Toronto,Pittsburgh, and Chicago, split at Buffalo! There were also through coaches and sleepers to Los Angeles,San Francisco, and points,on the Santa Fe,or Union Pacific,as an example! The US railroads had many cross country connections, and that example cited above, was on of many! Pullman had about 10,000 pieces of rolling stock,so the railroads had a hefty reserve for traffic surges! A bit of parallel US history! Thank you 😇 😊!
Thank you @robertthuron9160. It's really good to hear of rail comparisons from other Countries. Yours is very interesting, thanks again for sharing and do stay tuned for more episodes.
Love it, thank you.
That's great to hear @simoncowan, we are really pleased you enjoyed this video and hopefully you will find some others in our collection that you will enjoy.
INCOMPATABLE COACH COUPLING & GANGWAY TYPES !!! At 0:17 is a coupling issue ! The SR, LNER, Pullman Company & BR used, Pullman designed semi-rigid corridor connections, and by default had to use the semi-automatic rigid Buckeye coupling, and retractable buffers. The GWR & the LMS, refused to adopt these more modern methods. So they continued to use the British Standard Suspension gangway (BSS), the traditional chain type coach coupling called a "Screw Link", and normal sprung buffers. This of course means that in normal operating circumstances, you cannot couple GWR/LMS type coaches to SR/LNER/BR/Pullman coaches. This disability could only be catered for by affixing special "Adaptor plates" to the BSS Gangway. But it could take four men, half an hour to affix such an adaptor, IF one was available ! Hence to cater for "inter-regional" services, coaches used on such trains, would be allocated on a semi-permanent basis, having been pre-fitted with the necessary adaptors. Which allowed the BSS gangway to physically "attach" to the Pullman type. NOTE: Pullman gangways do not attach to each other, they only rub each other, hence their wide rubbing plate edges. Further they have hidden "hydraulic buffing gear" in the floor section of the Pullman gangway, known as the "rubbing bar". Meaning their regular buffers MUST be in the retracted position, when the Buckeye coupling is used, to avoid derailments in sharp curves and pointwork. To couple to a loco or a GWR/LMS Screwlink coupling, the Buckeye had to be lowered. This heavy coupling was mounted on a hidden hinge. The "pin" had to be pulled out, to allow it to be lowered to reveal a standard coupling hook. Raising it later, was a little harder as it weighed at least 1.5cwt !!!
@railwaymechanicalengineer4587. Thank you for your information and observations, we are pleased our video is so closely watched and hope you enjoyed it as so many others have.
I'd be happy to get my scenery at least 20% as good as this. look forward to visiting one day soon to see it up close 🎉
Many thanks @_RandomPea, we look forward to seeing you, do leave yourself plenty of time for your visit....
Beautiful layout. Love the attention to detail. Thanks for sharing. I love the open space. A lot of layouts (mine included!) are limited by space and cram too much into a space that is too small. Liked and Subbed! Cheers, Andy
Many thanks Andy. We are fortunate that the Vale Scene Diorama at Pendon is the size of a tennis court! Lots of room for everything and always scope to add to the scene to keep the museum interesting for even the most frequent visitor.
Great video! Fantastic realism - and "Charlie" earning his corn (hay probably!) hard at work!
Thank you for that kind endorsement @geoffreypeart-b1z, Charlie certainly deserves his feed when you think what he has to do during the working day.
Charlie looks quite small for a Shire but otherwise beautifully observed and modelled.
Very pleased you enjoyed the video @garrymartin6474. We will make sure Charlie has bigger portions in future :).
Lovely video. Thankyou!
Thank you @michaelmiller641. We are really pleased you enjoyed this episode, do please subscribe to our Channel and we hope to release another 'Pendon Gem' very soon.
Such a wonderful museum.I really did not believe all the fuss about Pendon till I visited. You have to go a few times to properly appreciate the quality.
We totally agree @kimmarsh5387. There are so many aspects of Pendon to see and enjoy and we are always pleased to hear that returning visits are such a good experience as well.
Absolutely love the look of the new yard(s)! I remember hearing in the 1971 interview with Roye England, he mentioned the walls and brickwork of the buildings were constructed out of card, is that still the case for all the structures?
Thank you @jacobarisz9272, we are pleased you like the tour of the Station yards. And yes, all buildings are still made from card as evolved by our Founder Roye England. Brick or stone courses are scored on and then painted with watercolours.
I thoroughly enjoyed that. Thank you
That's what we like to hear @pemboart, we are very pleased you enjoyed this production. More to come, please do subscribe to our Channel to be kept up to date.
Thanks for this new video. Great to see a feature on the yard. It is so prominent yet gets no attention. Perhaps a video of the local pick up could be arranged. Main line are always good, but give a different perspective too. 👍👍👍
Many thanks for your comments @robertbates5790 and suggestion for a future episode. We will see what we can do. Please keep watching and do please subscribe to our Channel.
What a lovely place! And the narration was very informative!
Thank you @Sonya_Makepeace. We are very pleased you enjoyed this video. As you say, it is a lovely place with so much to see.
Very informative video. And great modeling
Many thanks for your kind comments @peternorris6438, we are pleased you enjoyed this video, it certainly gives you a close up of the Station Yard and it's workings.
Love the attention to detail and the stories backing this up. Thanks and one day I'll get to Pendon. Blessings.
Many thanks @davidhinks8384, we look forward to welcoming you.
Where's the bus driver?
In the station having a leak!
Or maybe a well earned cuppa....
He's around somewhere, that's for sure....
Hi Tim, Superb insights as always and Pendon finally features, as promised some time ago, at 11 mins 05 on my latest video that I released yesterday. Must get down soon for a visit! Regards, Andy 👍
I first went along to Pendon about 20 years ago when I was living in Oxford. Completely blew me away to what can be an achieved in modelling and how to think about a model railway. I know I can never match the skills these modellers over the decades have shown, or their patience but I have been inspired for life!
@ Gotta go soon
Thank you @HighFell for your glowing review. It's really good to hear that our modelling team are providing such inspiration. Enjoy your modelling and we hope to see you again in the museum one day.
Thanks for this excellent video, highlighting all of the subtle nuances that I missed on my last visit, a couple of months ago.
Thank you @brakecompo2005, we are pleased that this video added to the enjoyment of your last visit. Hopefully we will see you again.
What do you mean by 'road motor'?
Thank you for viewing and for your question. The road motor (as it was known) is the delivery lorry. We hope you enjoyed the video.
I was looking to see whether any baulk road (but standard gauge) remained in the sidings. Sometimes there was always a cheerful mixture, often at crossings (points).
thank you for looking so closely and we hope you enjoyed the video.
Wonderful stuff - a window on the past.
Thank you @paulepebberson4884, we are very pleased you enjoyed this video and hope you like some of the others in our collection.
A little piece of heaven 🎶🕺🏻
Thank you, we are really pleased you liked this episode, it’s great to see the villages and surrounding areas that inspired our founder (Roye England) to create the Pendon museum that is loved by so many.
Nice cab-ride. Was hoping to see the hidden storage area as well.
Many thanks for your comment, maybe next time…. We are pleased you enjoyed this episode.
I'm enjoying this series. I was hoping the slip coach was going to be slipped on the set (even though I knew it wouldn't be). I last visited Pendon about 30 years ago, so I guess there has been a lot of progress since then.
We are very pleased you are enjoying the series and we hope to bring you more at regular intervals. Yes, the last 30 years has seen many great changes and enhancements at Pendon but one thing remains the same and that is the enthusiasm of all of the volunteers that help make Pendon a very special place to visit. Do come back again if you can, you will be most welcome.

When I started helping at Pendon in the mid 60's Roy's view was still very much in the 30's and I don't think he was keen on putting diesels on the layout. However, at that time, as a young fireman/second man diesels were very much the scene on the mainline and new diesels appearing regularly while the steam locomotives now appearing very old and run-down. However, I don't think Roy would have been upset at showing the Vale with the Western Region's progress into diesels today. From this video it was really nice seeing how these hydraulic classes looked running in the Vale. It was very tactfully done and the only disappointment was not having the D600's and the Westerrn Hydraulics on show. I stayed with Pendon until 1974 when I moved as driver to Marylebone Depot. The daily travelling too and from London as well as a lot of Sunday working made it impossible for me to continue at Pendon. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Pendon and it is always a bit sad for me to return every now and again and find most of the old lads have now passed on.
First of all, thank you for being a supporter of Pendon for so many years and for helping at the museum. Thank you also for your thoughts on diesels in the Vale and your experiences, it’s a pleasure to read. You might like to know that we have a repeat Special Showing over the weekend of Dec 7th/8th, when you will indeed see a Western in maroon livery running along the sea wall. Thanks again and we hope you enjoy our future short videos.
@@PendonMuseumVideos Thank you for your kind reply. I would like to add that while so many of the old lads have gone the present group are looking after Pendon every bit as well and with the respect that Roy held for the project. My two American friends who accompanied me this last visit were extremely pleased and couldn't believe such a fantastic model railway existed and really appreciated the decades of work that have gone into it. I will try and visit in December if possible.
@swipewrite Many thanks for your great endorsement. We hope to welcome you back in December.
Hi, i am trying to build the same train (castle and 6 collet composit) in oo scale but in the 1935 shirtbutton era. And i am just wondering does the 1935s conditioned C flyer also consist of a castle and 6 composites. Thanks in advamce!

Well spotted and thank you for paying such close attention to the video 😉. We hope it didn’t spoil your viewing and hope you are enjoying all of our videos.
Makes me wonder if a remote means of electromagnetic uncoupling could be devised (on permanently live track), then with a motorised coach bogie, the slip could be diverted into the station and gracefully halted. That would be something to see!
It certainly would. Many thanks for watching.
Pendon is a wonderful place. I last visited, decades ago, with a friend. It was so long ago that we met and talked to Roye England, who tried to recruit us as model makers! No way that we could live up to the standards required, so we politely declined his very kind offer. A very special memory and one day I hope to visit again.
Thank you for sharing your story, we always have room for another model maker 😉. We really hope you can visit us again one day, so much will have been added since your last visit.
beautiful
Thank you. We are pleased you enjoyed this production. It was a great day at the Museum.
Short but sweet. Thank you Pendon. My first visit was in summer '73. Still in the old nissan hut. I had the pleasure of meeting Roy England a number of times. I joined many others in donating to the fund for the new building. I've visited a number of times since, but been quite a while since last. Much enjoy the videos you have created and watch them often just for the joy of it. Roy would be proud of you all. 👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
Thank you for your great comments and thank you very much for being a part of the Pendon journey. Our supporters and Friends are very important to us and to be able to make the museum available and relevant to generations to come.
Great museum, incredible models - but as for all this modern stuff....Naah. Give us a break, it's anathema at Pendon. Ridiculous.
Many thanks for your comments, we are very pleased you like to see Pendon as was but these special days mean so much to many visitors and help them understand the transition from the Pendon period to today. Our next video should please you though 😉.

Wow, thank you. The team try hard both in the museum and online to share the wonder of the Pendon period, we are very pleased it’s so well liked.
The trains of the 30's were so much more 'romantic' and had a lot of 'personality'. Thanks for sharing !
We totally agree and so nice when we have the opportunity to compare them with the modern day sometimes.
