  • Pendon Museum's scenes display finely modelled trains of the Great Western and other railways at the height of the steam age, as well as an extensive representation of the Vale of White Horse in high summer, complete with a village of thatched cottages. Roye England's individual contribution was as a modeller of exquisitely detailed rural buildings, but it was part of his genius that, as well as building cottages which set entirely new modelling standards, he was able to gather about him a team of others with a wide range of skills and inspire them to new heights in their chosen fields of modelling.

Roye England, a delightful man. His dedication to the vision of Pendon will live for all time. Some years back I did pull his leg about the painters having not yet finished painting the railings around the pond by the pub. The last I saw of them, they were still there enjoying a lunchtime pint.

Thank you for sharing your memories of times with Roye, his dedication does indeed live on through all of the volunteers at Pendon (and some still enjoy a lunchtime pint)…..

While I don't envy growing up in the 20s and 30s, I am very glad to see it preserved in model form as everything has a certain beauty to it in that period! I am looking forward to seeing it once again!

Thank you for your welcome comment. We are so lucky that our founder Roye England had the foresight to create a time gone by in miniature, allowing generation after generation to explore and understand that time whilst enjoying the special modelling created by our team of volunteers over the years. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Wonderful!! My first visit was in 1973, and I had the pleasure of meeting Roye a number of times in the next year or two. Such a quiet, but confident man. I am sure it would greatly please him to see the progress you have all achieved.

    Fantastic!
He didn't sound a bit Australian - not at all what I was expecting!
