Minolta X700 Repair/Hack
Cap replacement on Minolta X700 didn't work? If Minolta parts didn't get the camera to release here is a repair tip I have been doing since the 80's. Every once and a while after replacing the caps and cleaning up the circuit boards the camera still doesn't release consistently, follow the video.

Not sure if this comment will get to you so long after this video has been posted, but I just wanted to thank you. I’ve been doing camera repair work for about 4 years (on a much more amateur level than yourself) and can tell by the incredible speed and precision of the strip down that you’ve been doing this for quite some time. I greatly appreciate you putting out these videos for people like myself who benefit from your vast catalog of knowledge. Hope to see more from you in the future. Best regards.

I'm loving this. Going to practice on some super cheap old lenses. I will say you move way to quick for me. I needed to slow down and rewind several times to get an idea of what you were doing. I'd look down at an example lens just to look at parts and by the time I look up you've moved 2 or 3 steps ahead.

Interesting video! I was watching to see if removing the top gave access to the inside of the aperture viewing window, but it doesn't look like it. I just got an FE2 in great shape except for the fact that the aperture window/lens that reads the aperture setting off of the lens and displays it in the viewfinder is completely occluded and white instead of clear. I can't figure out how this could have occurred or how it might be fixed. cleaning the outside of the window has no effect. Is this something that could be sent in and repaired, or would the cost/hassle make it not worth it?

Hey Jim, nice video, thank you for posting. Years ago, I was using my Hasselblad 500C at a wedding and had the mirror return spring break on me during shooting. It was a learning experience I would not care to repeat. The camera was repaired and brought back to life by a repair shop here in Chicago. Broken springs happen from time to time but are not to common. Years ago people really used their Hasselblads hard, back in the 80 and 90's it was rare to see a Hasselblad in the hands of someone who was not a professional photographer. Hasselblads really got a workout back then.

Many of my tools were purchased back in the 80's and 90's and many are no longer available. Keep an eye out on eBay, I have seen camera repair hand tools being sold if someone retires. When I buy, I always look for quality items made in Germany, Sweden and England. They usually are made from quality steel and will last a lifetime of hard work. There are some custom tools that I have made from cheap tools for taking off specific screws, all that is needed is a flat screwdriver and a Dremel.

    • @ictcamera560

If the front mount was removed than it is highly likely the string jumped the internal pulleys. At bare minimum, the rewind side will have to come off completely but in many cases the front will need to be pulled out to get the string back on the pulleys.

James Holman Some tools I used can be bought, like the driver tips which are JIS that I buy from Canon. I have acquired most of my tools over 40 years of repair career, and since I do a lot of F3 repairs I made some special tools to speed service and cut down on incidental scratches. From the looks of the impact the cover will be difficult to remove because the tolerances are so tight and a pushed in top plate will bind on the threads that you will find under the winding lever after a retaining ring is removed. As for tools, the grippy thing is just a piece of old bicycle inner tube, the round nose pliers were kinda cheap but had a long arms and were thin, perfect to the modified for the ring and lastly a screwdriver modified to remove the multi-exposure retaining screw. I'm not sure what the repair guy was talking about when they said something about gears being bent that run the counter, they don't know the F3 very well.
