  • In this video I will take a part this Nikon AF 180mm 2.8 lens down to the barrel. I have been repairing lenses for 35+ years so you will be able to see how a working technician disassembles a lens. The Nikon AF 180mm 2.8 and AF 180mm 2.8D are almost exact except for the circuit board. I will put this together in another video.

Thanks for making this video. Very instructive. But maybe make the music MUCH quieter in future videos, or just turn it off completely. You have a good voice and good audio, and we are here to listen to the expert... you. Not the repetitive music.

AF lens disassembly is for the pros like you - unless you want to make a door stop. Beautiful lens.

I followed his instructions to remove the front group and it worked swimmingly to clean fungus off of it. I am grateful for this video. Now I am proceeding to disassemble the front group to get fungus out of that. The way I look at it, even a tiny bit of dust is better than an element covered in fungus!

Great presentation. Frankly, this is something I wouldn’t dare to try it myself, but I enjoy watching every episode you released. I do have a small collection of the Nikon mechanical cameras plus quite a few manual SLR lenses. As far as I can tell, you are located in San Diego area. I may just bring them all in for CLA!

I am disassembling the 180/2.8D version, and it's different when it comes to removing the element adjacent the helicoid. Could you, perhaps, comment on how the D version comes apart? Thanks.

Hi, great video but I was wondering if the front element also comes apart ? Thanks

When removing the front element of this lens, I see two places for the wrench to grip, is it the notches on the outer rim or the inner rim?

Always go outer first if you want the whole group out

@@ictcamera560 I used your video to successfully remove the front group and clean fungus off of the back of the rear element in the front group as well as the front of the element further down in the lens. I am still trying to separate the front group elements with the same tool you used and man that inner ring is tuckered down pretty tight. Is there another set screw to remove the inner ring of the front element group? Should I put the lens back together, tighten the set screw down and try to remove the inner ring that way vs holding the front group in my hand?

@@Bredddi The front elements are always really tight. Also note that the front element ring is sealed in there by the paint. Run an exacto blade between the inner and outer rings to break the paint seal then use acetone in the groove. Use acetone very sparingly.

@@ictcamera560 thank you very much I will try this tomorrow. Thank you for teaching me how to save my lens. The 180mm f2.8 is one of my favorite lenses of all time and punches way above it’s weight. I bought a used copy while I lent out my original and it had fungus. This video saved it 100%. You never know who you’re going to help when you share your knowledge in life….

That background 'music' is quite disturbing, especially for myself as a non-native speaker. If you consider that background noise a necessity, I would suggest to lower its level by let's say 6 dB or so. It's louder than your voice from time to time.

Highly instructive but the highly repetitive and irritating music drives me insane. It's unnecessary.
