What a fabulous Macro Lens Gem and so easy to use compared to the clip on one that I have 👍 Exciting first day after the festive season isn't it. I loved looking around our allotment and seeing the spring bulbs starting to come up. Your brassicas are looking amazing. 😍 Have a great week Gem ❤ xx
Great how to video Gem ❤ I did this last year but didn't put the containers outdoors but left them in the polytunnel. I think it worked quite well. I also used them for cuttings. Hope the video does well for you as you deserve it. Lots of love ❤ xx
Good luck with them Gem I have had very poor results when trying this method, but I'm a lot further north than you. I hope you've saved seed to sow the conventional way as well. Thanks for sharing, bfn.🐞🌻🌱
Those I had outside last winter got too wet. This year I do my winter sowing in the plastic greenhouse, which also allows me to use any kind of container as we don't have milk jugs here (not sure the seeds enjoy the wind-shield liquid cans), and I can water them or put some snow on now and then. I don't have any sun to mention until April, so it won't get too hot too soon.
i will be starting mine next week as i am waiting for my compost to be delivered I'm excited as i only have small garden. no greenhouse no poly tunnel. I am please that someone else in the uk is doing this as most videos are from abroad. good luck i will be watching for updates lol
Love this!
Gemma great thanks I'm going to be trying that
Great job. I’d love to do this, unfortunately it would freeze. Can’t wait to see them once they’ve grown and ready to plant.
Great idea! I tried something similar before and think I'll give it a go again this year. I'm just a little wary about sowing so early!! (I'm in NE Scotland)
Do you ever stop! Haha great video gemma. Keep us updated on their progress. Maybe try clear tape next time though to allow as much light in. Exciting to see how they get on. Danny 🌱
Thanks Danny ☺️ I will try clear tape on my next batch, Thank You for the tip! Fingers crossed I have some success 🙌
Didn't realise basil could be started now!
It's a bit of an experiment, hopefully a successful one!
@@GemInTheGarden wish ya well!
Thank You 😊
Hi Gem. Good luck with your seed sowing. I ried this method last year, but the germination rate was very poor so I have gone back to my usual way to sow,- in trays with propagator lids in a cold greenhouse. I get excellent germination that way. yes it oes cost a bit more with trays and covers, but I prefer to spend taht bit extra to get good germination and not waste my seed. I know many people swear by this method but I think maybe it is a little too winter wet in my part of the country and possible the seeds damp off before they can germinate. Happy growing 🙂
Thank You 😊 I will keep everyone updated with how it goes, fingers crossed I have some success 🙌
@@GemInTheGarden I hopeit goes great Gem 🙂
A fun idea for kids too as they can peak inside and see how their seeds are doing. Have a marvellous week Gem, stay warm, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦
I will definitely be sowing more over the next few weeks, nothing to lose 😀 have a great week Ali x
Thats brilliant Gemma. What a great idea. They each have their own little micro climate. Thanks for sharing - so - to save some milk bottles now 😊. Cheers
I'm hoping I have some success. Let me know how you get on!
Great video Gem! I do this most years with things like poppies, sweet pea, etc. I normally write the date on there as well as i always forget when i sowed them. Just keep an eye out in case slugs get in there as well.
Great shout about the date! And the slugs 😑 I'm sure there will be some!
Gemma, great demonstration on the Winter Sowing process. I’ve been using this process for around ten years and I’m located in Southern California. I start all of my tomatoes (20+ varieties) and peppers/chilies (10+ varieties) using this process. I do have to water the containers if we don’t have rain.
Wow it's good to know you start tomatoes and chilli's the same way...I think that's what I'll do this year 😀
I love winter sowing. Because you're wetter than I am.... extra perlite to the growing medium is a help. But if you have lots of rain, you can throw a clear plastic over the clump of jugs. I've had a good batch of algae growing some wet years. They are little green houses so you'll need to vent them on warm days once they have sprouted. Good Luck.
Thanks for the tips Robin, I'm hoping to get some success 🙌
@@GemInTheGarden It's so fun. Plus you can add a few more containers when time is available. Getting flowers on the go is great. 🥰
@RobinGardens I'm definitely going to start some perenial flowers and whatever else I can over the next few weeks 👍
Great video Gemma. I did this last year with most of my flowers and had such amazing results, I’ve also done them in zip lock food bags. I also find the best pens to use are the Artline Garden Marker, you can get them in multi packs too so you can have one in every place you sow/grow as I always misplace mine. Deb x
I've seen the food bags be done and really wany to try that too, thanks for the tip on the marker 👍
I find the Dymo type labeller to be the best to last , used everything permanent markers , waterproof gardening pens , pencils the lot doesn't work for me they disappear 🙄 labeller works 👍
That's good to know, I was worried none of the ways I did it would work and I would be guessing what seeds are what 😅
@@GemInTheGarden 😂😂 been there 😂
😅😂😂
Love this. I just joined a FB group using this method actually (most do just flowers) so love that you have chosen fooooood ❤
I didn't realise how popular the method is, so many people seem to have great success with it, especially with flowers like you say 👏
Love this idea, im going to do my herbs like this thanks Gem 😊
Amazing 👏 let me know how you get on!
Nice idea Gem. I look forward to seeing how they come on.
Thank You, I'm hoping I get some success 🙌
I tried it one year.I did a few flower seeds. And i did get a few flowers .The only thing is that I'm in Florida and don't drop in temperatures that much( this year, we are getting colder weather).I'm over wintering some chamomile seeds in my greenstalk. They have these little covers now that can be used as a greenhouse.I don't know if it will work because it's not completely covered to ME! LOL ❤
Hi Delphine, that's good to hear you had some success, I hope I do too! Ahhh I'm sure they will be fine 🙂
@GemInTheGarden 😊
Wonderful video gem. I honestly have never tried this method. We go through about 3-4 bottles of milk per week so ill be trying this!
It's worth a try isn't it 😊 I've seen some really good results from others online so I'm hoping I get some success 🙏
Lovely gem xxx very informative xx🐨🐨🐨
Thank You 😊
Hi Gem there is a marker pen which is waterproof and doesn't fade. Think they are called garden marker pens .I got mine for few quid on eBay or Amazon. I got mine last year and for the crops that did survive the slug fest I can still read the labels. Have a look and if you want me to send you a link let me know. Have a great week x
Oh that sounds great! Yes if you could send me the link that would be fabulous 👌
@GemInTheGarden There are others obviously but gives you an idea of what to look for x
Ooooo thanks for this tip
@HollyMaysGoodLife your very welcome x
Did you add water in before you put them outside or do you just rely on the rain 🌧️
Hi Mary, I will rely on the rain, I will keep an eye on them and if we have a hot dry spell I will give them a water so they don't dry out 👍
@GemInTheGarden thank you. I found a list of seeds I can grow this way so gonna get sowing now.
@maryconnell888 great 👍 let me know how you get on 😊😊
Handy tips for reusing plastic bottles. I was worried you were gonna put them on a windowsill but glad to see they are out in the light. Great video Gem
Thank You Tony, hopefuly I will get some good results. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say 😊
Thanks Gem . Love the phone camera lens kit ....amazing pictures. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank You Caroline, have a great week! 😊
Freezing cold with ice and snow in north east Scotland!
It's a little warmer here today, it's been so cold here the last week or so! Have a great week 😊
Great update Gem! Bloody freezing isn't it!? I still have some leaves i need to put down on the beds. Ended up putting some old net curtains on the main bed for now. Was too busy over Christmas. You get done, what you get done, when you can. Going to try and pull out some carrots in a bit! Yesterday, the cold frame lid was frozen shut so i think it will be like those cartoons trying to get them out! lol Have a great week!
It's been SO cold hasn't it! Saturday morning when I looked it was -7! Hooe you got your carrots 🥕 have a great week!
Lovely video as always! Here in West Yorkshire Mondays snow froze solid and is still very much here. The ice meant the schools were closed so the Christmas holidays were waaaay too long 😂. Warmer temperatures are due this week so as soon as it melts I’ll be on the plot! 👨🌾
Thank You 😊 oh goodness 😅 mine were so ready to go back to school and I was too 😂 freezing here was -7 this morning! Hopefuly it warms up like you day, have a great weekend 😊
Nice to get prep work done and even nicer to be outdoors even if its freezing cold. Thanks for sharing, bfn.🐞🌻🌱
Thank You Jane have a great weekend 😊
Happy New Year 🎉
Happy New Year ✨️
Gemma your a breath of fresh air at start of year
Thank You Ned, have a great weekend 😊
Happy NY Gemma (& Family), i shall be glad when January is over, I find it so depressing. I managed to get to my plot Wednesday and was delighted to see a huge pile of woodchip. I managed to membrane around my fruit bushes followed by 12 wheelbarrows …I felt that the next day. No snow in Norwich but was -3 this morning at 6:30 whilst driving to work brrrrr
Happy New Year ✨️ wishing you the best for 2025 ✨️ oh I agree January isn't a great month is it! Sounds like you've been busy and made lots of progress 👍 it's - 3 here too...so cold isn't it ❄️🥶 have a fab weekend x
Gosh gem! Do you ever stop!?!?! I love those microlenses! Can't wait to try mine out too! This was such a great video! That closeup of the broccoli 😍 Polytunnel looked fab mulched! "Welldone". X haha😊
Hee hee yes sometimes 😅 the lenses are so fabulous, really fun to use and great pictures! Thank You 😂🥰 x
Greetings from South Bucks, top of the Chiltern Hills we have had a slight dusting of snow and hard frost
Happy New Year ✨️ it's going to be a cold weekend, hope you have a good one 🥶❄️😊
Hi Gemma Happy New Year 🎊 blessings to you and family,we here in B/dos have the beautiful sunshine ☀️ happy gardening
Happy New Year ✨️ ☺️ you have the opposite of us, -3 and very cold 🥶 have a fabulous weekend and enjoy your beautiful sunshine 🌞
Gemma I love the camera idea and I’ve shared it. It also gave me an opportunity to get others to subscribe to your channel😬. I can’t believe what you’re able to do in January. I’m so jealous. It’s still in the minus temperatures 🥴😢. Never mind I’m just transplanting indoor plants. Keep going, you’re doing amazing stuff.
Hi Wanda 👋 wow Thank You so much for sharing ❤️✨️ it's been cold here today -3 and will get colder over the weekend ❄️🥶 Thank You for the support as always x
Happy New Year Gem to you and your family. Great tips there, there's always something to be done in a garden. Take care
Happy New Year Bethan 🎉 ✨️ All the best for 2025, looking forward to seeing what you do on your new allotment ✨️
Happy New Year Gem and family, here’s to an even better 2025. Hers is damp and cold with lots of foggy mornings and nights. But so far no snow 🙏, Ali 🥶😶🌫️🇨🇦
Happy New Year Ali 🎉 no snow here either but -3 today. Roll on spring, have a fab weekend 😀
@ 8c here but damp like that damp that gets in your bones
@myrustygarden yeah the wet weather is the worst isn't it Ali 😒
Happy New Year Gem. Its freezing here in the Borders. We had snow, some still on the ground, but hard frost and minus 10 at night. Everything is encased in ice and the ground, water butts and plants are totally frozen. No gardening for me since before Christmas. Roll on Spring. Thanks for another lovely video xx
-10 😲🥶 that is SO cold! Wow! Like you say, roll on spring! Have a fabulous weekend 😊
Hi Gem,deep freeze here .Minus 6 last night and nothings thawed today .
Wow that's super cold! 🥶❄️ have a fab weekend 😀
Hey Gem the frozen wonderland here in Dublin is coming to a close.....apparently, it's still freezing! Further down the country still have power and water loss, safe to say I feel grateful being where I am right now. My very first jalapenos have just germinated along with some greens and onions, very excited for spring. Love that lens!
Good to hear it's coming to an end and you are in a good safe place 🙏❄️ ooohhh exciting news about your jalapeños, I'm going to start some too, I've never grown them! Have a great weekend 😊 ❤
Lovely gem xx I can't wait till spring xx🌋🌋🌋
Me too! Something to look forward to 😊🙏
Hi Gem, Happy New Year to you and your family. Yes, we have had snow on Sunday, Tuesday, freezing conditions on between -4 overnight too so pathways are frozen and slippy. Your pokytunnel plants, are looking very healthy. Lots of preparation done for the upcoming season. Lovely plot update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Happy New Year ✨️ oh wow that's cold!🥶❄️ Thank You im pleased with how everything looks, have a great weekend 😊
Happy new year, Gemma. In the NW of England we had a few cm of snow last weekend and a dusting yesterday. Cold nights, the plot is frozen! Your polytunnel looks fantastic btw with all the winter veggies!
Happy New Year! We still haven't had any snow in London but it's really cold, -3 at the moment which is cold for us! Thank You I'm really pleased with how things are going in the polytunnel 🙏 Have a great weekend 😊
@GemInTheGarden London always struggles with snow doesn't it. You too, have a good one! 🧑🏻🌾
@downtoearthwithjim it does! ❄️ Thanks Jim!
Happy New Year Gemma, Frost on top of frost, on top of frost for the last week. Couldn't get the greenhouse door open, frozen solid. Shed padlock frozen also, had to pour hot water over it to get access to the bird food.
It's just so cold isn't it 🥶 I think it's going to get colder from what I hear too! ❄️
And Happy New Year! ✨️
Happy New Year Gemma. The allotment is looking great and your brassicas are doing amazing. I’ve not been to my plot for nearly 3 weeks as I’ve had flu and then whooping cough!!!! Then last week we had an enormous amount of snow in Bingley (so much it actually made onto BBC national weather) and we’ve hardly been able to get our cars off the development as the temperatures have been up to -9 at times so it’s like an ice rink! Hopefully I’ll get there over the weekend to see if anything has survived! Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Deb
Hi Deb, poor you there are some really nasty bugs going round aren't there 🤒 hope you're feeling better 🙏 wow that is so cold! It's -3 here today in London and feels colder than it has for a long time. Have a great weekend 😊
