I've known "Doc" (Ron's nickname) for over 20 years. He is and has always been big on ideas. As with the AN2, I have no idea what he had ever thought that he was going to do with that "bird". Pretty sure that he purchased multiple Cessna 402s, they were going cheap when folks figured out that the cost to deal with the spar AD was going to be more than the value of the airplane. Likely one or 2 Cessna 182s in there that are salvageable.

I would of guess the solenoid was the issue. Like maybe the ground wire got too hot and came off of were it was spot welded Or the windings just burnt up. The armature looked good, the contacts looked good, it had good brushes. Unless you have a soldering iron, to de solder the plug, and hit it out of the solenoid assembly, and a arbor press to press out the solenoid winding assembly, you wouldn't be able to see if the solenoid was the problem. The only way to tell if the solenoid was the issue, is to bench test the starter with a battery. When testing, a bad solenoid, would cause the drive gear to come out and in, in a continuously very fast. and make like a click and clack noise. Either, the bearing near the gear side of the armature was bad, or they didn't put enough grease into the gear reduction assembly. Because it made too much noise when turning the armature by hand. I am also thinking it was a bad bearing because the steel body of the armature has abrasion that made parts of it shinny.

How often have we seen such rare, one-off prototypes left to go to ruin just because no-one gave a sh@*t? The current custodian is clearly an eccentric hoarder - good at rescuing but hopeless at conserving. Do him a mercy, take it off his hands for what he asks and get it saved! it doesn't matter if you can't spare the coin or are only lukewarm interested. The fact that you have unearthed its location makes you the standard-bearer. Contact friends and colleagues, broadcast it widely.... I can't believe that a country as wealthy as America couldn't round-up a few obscure aviation nerds to pass the hat around and form a consortium to purchase the aircraft and have it restored before it finally decays to dust. You don't even need to pay for a hangar, a used ex-shipping container can suffice for storage. And don't forget, what it was intended to accomplish still remains probably the last great, un-broken aviation record still waiting to be claimed. restoring this aircraft may inspire a new generation of speed-freaks to try their luck in the Bonneville of the sky....!
