When you said "V-V-V" it made sense to me. I have learned scales and modes. I cannot fluently play all over the neck. I've started the daily practice routine from your Patreon and working through the circle of fourths. Your Patreon page has been helpful on helping me focus.

Minor major 7 add 9 chord. Played that song my whole life and never knew that chord name. 👍 🙂 You must have a notebook to remember all those songs or you have a photogenic memory. 😂
Im curious about why 7 pattern instead of the 5 pattern im starting learn my fretboard and the caged system help because each barre chord is connected to a pattern of the 5 so for the E shape chord I have pattern 1 etc? To me it seems easier but i wonder if im doing it wrong?
@@EazeT-s4n there are 7 notes in the major scale (and each of the modes) so each note has a pattern built off of it and it’s an easy way to organize everything. The CAGED method is good, but you will be missing the ‘inner’ patterns, making it harder to connect the whole fretboard in one key. Put another way, with 7 patterns every note in that scale blends together into one large pattern, from the open strings to your 22nd (or 24th) fret.

Got two old ones, a red knob and a silver face? They both have circuit boards vs point to point. They sound ok but need more modding to get what I desire in tone. They are both barky sounding. I also have two Epi valve Jr’s modded with new trannys etc etc. Nothing beats my Peavey classic 30 though.
Excellent video. A few years ago I developed some pain in my left hand knuckles on the middle and fourth fingers. My dad has arthritis and so myself hitting 50 y.o. I thought I was destined for arthritis as well. I've switched up my diet to mostly meat and have eliminated fruit and vegetables to just once in a while. I hit 55 two months ago and my joints haven't felt this good since I was in my 30's. I'm not a pro player but I've noticed that the finger speed I had in my 20's has nearly returned. Of course I'm not making a recommendation, but diet has a huge influence on our bodies.
Hearing that being played is reassuring. I bought a 2023 model to learn on, and later had doubts about my choice. (Mine has rough fret ends.) I've never seen anyone teaching online with beginner gear; that's a good idea.
Thanks, Korey! Just found your channel and have this exact tele on my next purchase list. I hear often these are referred to as “beginner” guitars. I would disagree. Any level of guitarist would have a place in their arsenal for Squires. As I age, I’ve become more cost conscious and both Squier and Epiphone brands fill the bill for me at a fraction of the cost of their respective big brother brands. I’d also argue that the quality of these brands are just as good, and sometimes better, than their more pricey counterparts. Great video and will be watching more of your content in the future!

I am a fast learner - been learning for 45 years - but still don’t know the entire fretboard like the back of my hand as you do. Indeed , I have played and learned enough over the years and already know many chords in different locations on the fretboard to KNOW that YOU GIVE GREAT INSTRUCTION in this video - such as PRACTICE UNTIL YOU DO NOT PLAY THE SONG WRONG👍👍👍👍👍 as when you reach that degree of skill -it - ( the song you are learning )becomes embedded 🎸🎸🙂✌️
Thanks. Even my 1 year old Ultra 1 is a bit sharp on the first 3 frets except the high E
I should’ve never stopped taking guitar lessons-haha😂
I like your "guard rails" metaphor.
This is good advice, for me I’ve found repeatedly playing through the piece EXCLUSIVELY. Only play that piece over and over to commit to both brain and fingers. Rinse and repeat!
The first thing any musician should do is learn a song beginning to end. Just 1 song, until you can do it. Make sure it is within your reach and level, but can be a simple song. Figure out the sections, IE) form / structure, key, time signature. Intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/Bridge/outro. Whatever it is, understand those checkpoints in the song. Play along to the studio version until you don't need the chart or the road map anymore. 1-2 times a day, 30 minutes a day until its just natural and relaxed to do it. After you learn 1 , the second one will be much easier. and every one after that gets easier, If you have limited time to learn the song, just simplify it, You don't need to play every note in the song and every passing chord. I Every time it gets easier. The first step is to pick a song and go for it. The goal is not to learn the song, maybe it is, but the goal is the process and the rewards that come in the journey. You are learning how to learn and that process is priceless and the lessons that come from the journey that you don't even realize along the way that are being taught subliminally. Most important thing is to have fun, Don't get frustrated, move on when you are, take breaks and come back. Here is something that I see every beginner go through, If something is hard and you always get stuck in that one place, don't work on the entire section anymore, just work on the chord or transition that is messing you up. For example if you are playing a simple 1 4 5 progression , C F G, and you always get stuck moving from an F to a G, then just make a two chord jam for yourself that focuses on going from F to G for awhile then come back to the full progression when you have the muscle memory to make that transition. Finally, How many of us have learned something on the piano for example. You always start from the beginning and then get stuck somewhere, then you go back to the beginning and start again but still get stumped when you get to the part that stumps you. Well, don't start from the beginning anymore, start where you have trouble. If you always start from beginning, you will only be good at the beginning, You don't have to learn from beginning to end. Try sometime, start at the end of a tune and work bacwards or in the middle section. Its ok to jump around, I usually go straight to the parts I know that are going to be hard for me first. To each their own, learn in the style that works for you, because we all have our own learning styles. This video was spot on and Corey did a great job of how to look at the over all key and narrow down the possiblities, when you get that concept under your belt, the process becomes way more streamlined and less overwhelming. Have fun, and remember to rest your brain when it feels frustrating. Listening to the song is just as important as playing the song.
O.k.
Thanks, Kory. This is a nice jump off point for putting together a routine - very comprehensive. I'm glad you're communicating the importance of practice, and your sharing of specifics. Do you think the Twang Banger would get closer to the Tele sound if it were mounted onto the Strat via a metal pickguard like the anodized aluminum we sometimes see? Many swear that part of the Tele sound also comes from the interplay of the metal onto which the bridge Tele pickups are often mounted. I also have a CS Tele and a CS Strat, and man that Tele will do everything. I could play Metallica on that thing and be fine. It’s insane how versatile they are. I’d love to get that versatility in my Strat’s bridge position while also keeping that Strat neck and middle pickup. Gotta love the tone chase. Great vid!
I use that Strat on lots of country gigs and I think it’s close enough with the Twangbanger. Although no substitute for a great Tele (it gets like 90% of the way there)
@@KoreyHicksGuitar 90% would be good enough for me, haha. May give this pickup a go then. But it sounds like I won’t be selling my Tele any time soon.
So what is your preference? Fender? Victoria? Swart? Or you can’t go wrong with either one?
Can I go wrong with any of them, the Victoria is darker, sounding less boxy due to the slightly larger cab, the Swart has its own vibe going on and is less background noise and hum to the better and more meticulous wiring, but only one of them says “champ “ on the front, which kind of makes me smile when I play it.
I just got a smaller amp. Its a Headstrong Santa Cruz.

Thanks for the video Korey...how did you have the champ set up on stage? with drums & other instruments did you have it coming back through the monitors?
We all had in-ear monitors, but I’ve used it on many small to medium size gigs as well up to about 1000 capacity with just a stage wedge helping out. Really the only difference between a 5 W amplifier and a 50 W amplifier is twice the volume, it’s not 10 times as loud, you’d be surprised at how loud a champ can be on six or seven!

Korey, I greatly enjoyed and learned from your experience. I’m still having intonation problems after going through all of the setup steps. I’ve got a new Affinity Squier Natural Tele’. I’ve updated the bridge and saddle to the vintage 3 brass barrel saddle style but replaced the saddles with Gotoh compensated & slotted ones. I’ve got perfect tuning, harmonics and 12th fret intonation but when checking fretted notes up around the 3rd and 5th frets my low E string in particular is way sharp. Seems the string length to those points aren’t matching the design of the guitar. Help! Some have hinted that the nut slots aren’t deep enough or maybe too narrow. Please address this in a video with measurements for a fender telecaster in particular at the nut.
Definitely cut the nut slots. It seems you have to push the strings down too far to touch the frets making them go sharp. Take your time and don't cut too much too fast.
