The Guitar in a Year | Week 3 - Complete Beginner to Intermediate Guitar Course
patreon.com/KoreyHicksGuitar
patreon.com/KoreyHicksGuitar?Link
Congratulations on your decision to learn to play the guitar! Over the next year, I will be walking closely with you on your journey. In the past twenty years of teaching thousands of intermediate-to pro-level students, I have often found myself addressing the gaps and deficiencies that have prevented these players from reaching the next level in their development.
What if these things had been fixed early on? How much better could these players have been? After seeing these common issues creep up again and again, I began to formulate a pedagogy and detailed plan of benchmarks (or, proficiency skills) for beginners.
This course is the result of those efforts and tens of thousands of hours of teaching experience. It is designed to give beginners the best resource possible for eliminating bad habits and ensuring continued growth on the guitar in any genre they choose. Your success will depend on how closely you follow the outline, learn to develop discipline and patience in practice, and, above all, put in the hours. This course is not a time machine; it is a roadmap. Have fun, enjoy the journey, and remember playing the guitar
should always be fun - but it might take a while to enjoy practicing the guitar. They are, after all, two different things. A simple analogy could be running laps and drills in sports vs. the actual game. What becomes enjoyable about the laps and drills is knowing they enhance your performance, and that growth becomes predictable and addictive!

    Enjoying this. I’m not a brand new beginner but this is good review and some is kinda new. Like the chromatic scale and the warm up finger exercises. Honestly if I was brand new I might be a little overwhelmed. So if you are brand new-this is excellent stuff. Stick to the plan and know we are all struggling with you.

      the tip of the index finger can be placed right next to the 6th (low E) string to mute it - (make the finger which plays the C note extended slightly which will mute the E string) which is probably a better idea and doesn't require reaching the thumb around.

    I personally found the 52 to be warmer with more midrange honk. There's no mistaking that as anything but a dictionary definition of a classic telecaster. The 59, to me, sounded a bit more aggressive (in a very goid way) and perhaps a little more versatile. More sparkle in the highs, less rounded sound. It still had the sound of a tele, but pushing a little bit in the 60s strat territory. Maybe in a mix would be harder to tell from a strat. I attribute that to the rosewod/alder/ A5 conbination, but maybe the steel saddles make the biggest difference? Either way, I've always wanted a double bound custom telecaster with steel threaded saddles, but lately (like last night), I've also been listening to Nocasters and early 50s teles making me want one. Algorithm did its trick to find your video.

      by the end of the year, a student would: 1: have the required skills (see below) necessary to join their first band, go to open mics, learn songs on their own, jam sessions, write their own music, and most importantly understand the overall scope of guitar proficiency (what would it take to be an advanced intermediate? A semi-pro? A pro? etc.) 2: Quick recall of all notes and intervals on the fretboard 3: all major scales in all 12 keys (84!) and their corresponding relative minor keys 4: a complete understanding of diatonic harmony (what chords are in each key? What notes are available?), which gives the student the practical knowledge of logically being able to figure songs out by mind/ear "oh F major and G major, when always together, means I'm in C Major. That means I can go here and...." 5: basic improvisational/soloing ability in major keys 6: a chord vocabulary of over 200 chords 7: all triads and their inversions on strings 1-3 and 2-4 8: basic sight-reading ability in major keys 9: playing whole songs that are 100% in BEGINNER levels 10: basic rhythmic fluency 11: experience in multiple genres (classical, blues, rock, funk, country, worship) I know it sounds different - but when you look at the whole scope of guitar instructional material (through the pro and Doctorate level) This IS beginner stuff. Part of the point in this course is to help so many players understand that they are, in fact, beginners (remember, how many YEARS you have played has no meaning on beginner/intermediate/advanced) it is total # of HOURS and MASTERY OF CONCEPTS, DEMONSTRATION OF PROFICIENCY. 99% percent of the time, when I get a new student that tells me they are semi-pro, or weekend warrior, or 'intermediate' - they don't have many of these skills learned. They skip over them to get 'to the good stuff', which puts you in a prison. Once you have spent a month learning 'sweet home alabama' or 'pride and joy' as your FIRST song, the ego won't let you go back and do this stuff. So people don't!

      Thanks for taking the time to care and reply so thoroughly 😊 For me I “know” so many bits of the puzzle and just can’t put together sufficient! I have watched purchased so many videos and course, I have had in person tuition but the only good one I had retired on me he had a method similar to yours. I think I’m now at a point I get how to learn! I just want the what to learn so it all makes sense. Yours is very comprehensive it’s scary! I doubt my brain can comprehend it all that’s the fear and why I guess many don’t learn this stuff or think it’s not necessary. I have no doubts of what you are saying is true… it’s not you it’s me 😂😂😂. But I’m willing to give it a go, because I practice 5 days a week, I can only unfortunately commit to an hour focused practice a day , I practice from 5:30am to 6:30 before work at 7. Plus couch practice which I can do when spending time with wife and kids. I’m “ok” but no where near what I want/need to be for the hours I have spent, I put it down to not knowing WHAT I should practice. There are so many guitar voices it swallows you up. I picked the guitar up at 39 with no music background other than the radio, so it’s learning everything from scratch with lots of voices !! Very difficult Thanks Corey

At first I could only stretch my middle and ring far enough to go down to the 3rd fret, but by now I can at least decently do it down to the 1st fret, ring finger still isn't great and I still need my calluses, but I saw a slight improvement every time I got back to the guitar (at least a few times a day). Third, I passed the string recognition with ease. Fourth, a bit of a vent. 9s on a 24" scale length is dumb, my low E is so damn floppy. Now for the week ahead, looks like I'll be spending a lot more time throughout the day with the new series of tasks. Would you say it's good to do each task on their own, take a break after the designated amount, come back for the next task, rinse and repeat? I like to break things down into bite sized chunks. I'll likely do a wall of text each week. My right handed friend has been practicing as he should, when he's home from work that is, but my left handed friend just informed me that he didn't even start, so he's got quite a bit of catch up to do

      each of the tasks should be done every day - not all in one go until you 'pass' the proficiency. look at your playing like training as an athlete - can't work legs for 2 months, then arms for 2 months... etc. much better to do a little each day. The practicing regimen is going to get full VERY quickly with lots of little tasks to do each day. Back in music school, when I would practice 10-12 hours a day, that consisted of 20-30 separate skills that were touched on every day.

    Hey man really appreciate these videos. Was wondering as someone that’s already been playing for a few months and has learnt a few chords, pentatonic scale, and some songs (some with barre chords) - i noticed you said you must master something before going to another. I didn’t learn in the most “linear” way and skipped over some of the open chords when I started and am now going back to master them. I would still consider myself a beginner but just not at the stage currently in the series. My question is would you say following this series would help someone like me who has surpassed some of the concepts but still has some gaps here and there? (Also for context I have a teacher and I’ve told them I want to master the basics and learn proper technique, fingerpicking, strumming, fretting cleanly etc) Thanks and sorry for the long winded comment!

    • @KoreyHicksGuitar
      @KoreyHicksGuitar 10 днів тому

      @@jellyj8194 yes absolutely, and there are a lot of proficiency checks and tests that will determine just how well you know the things that you do know! Remember, just because you can play something doesn’t mean you really know it. With every musical skill, you have have to memorize it with the mind, the ear and then the hand. A lot of people assume because they can play something (such as a chord) means they can move on, but you really need to understand it’s function, how it sounds, etc., so that you can know where to use it in the future or even just hear it in a song you want to learn and know that that’s the same chord. this saves a lot of frustration in the long run and a lot of people get really frustrated when they have to backtrack and learn beginner concepts when they view themselves as intermediate or even advanced. The ego takes a hit and they just assume they don’t have to learn it so they never do!

    Great video Korey. Question for you. Do you think its very important to know all notes in every key/mode with very fast recognition? meaning, how important is not thinking in scale shapes. Are shapes bad? I know thats 3 questions but I think you get what I mean. Great lesson!

    • @KoreyHicksGuitar
      @KoreyHicksGuitar 10 днів тому

      @@dmc549 it just depends on how fast and freely you want to be able to improvise. it’s very common for students to tell me that they feel bored when they are playing because they play the same things over and over again and don’t feel like they are actually improvising and creating. For those people, they are probably relying on patterns too much or never learned the deeper nuances of improvisation. Patterns aren’t bad, but they don’t tell you that certain notes in the scale are OK at certain times and not at others. For example, the sixth, commonly referred to as the 13th in a mixolydian mode might be used near the end of the fourth measure in a blues because it is actually the major third of the chord you’re going to. If you were just thinking in shapes, It’s just another note. It has no deeper meaning, but if you know theoretically what that note is trying to tell you and what musically it’s being pulled towards, you can create a stronger resolution when measure five comes. Tells the listener that the player seems to know where the story of his solo is going rather than just picking around and hoping things sound good.

      @ thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. this is a great perspective. My follow up to that is if you just knew the intervals deeply for every scale is that enough or do I need to know that B flat Dorian has Bb C Db Eb F G Ab notes. Is knowing where all of the following intervals : 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 are everywhere on the fretboard relative to the root not enough? or do I also need to know their names quickly.

    • @KoreyHicksGuitar
      @KoreyHicksGuitar 9 днів тому

      @@dmc549 if you had to pick just one concept, I would learn intervals. But knowing that F is the 13th of Ab and the b5 of B is important to get the full perspective and to be able to communicate with other musicians. Let’s say you have a keyboard player in your band or at the gym session, being able to communicate harmony effectively means you will be able to support each other better

    The first thing that needs to be checked is the frets. Do they need leveled? The rest wont make it all work if the frets need leveled. I trued size 11 strings on my strat and messed up my frets. I will never go back to that. I did find the reasons that works but I am older now and it's time for 9's and or 9'5's
