- @Jennn_errator from Women In Vinyl started her annual May Vinyl Challenge on Instagram. She curates a topic for each day of the month and has the community respond. I decided that if I'm going to do Instagram, I could just as easily (yeah right) do a video here as well. So each day I'm going to post on Instagram and here. Please consider participating on Instagram #mayvinylchallenge and here as well if you're up for it.

I am in the SAME EXACT boat, I knew some tidbits about him. Knew Surfer Rosa, In Utero, knew he was in Shellac and a band with a very ill-considered name and that's it, but since he passed I've learned more about him, about Big Black, about his approach to recording, his eccentric approach to the guitar, his body of work, and his ethos, and I feel somewhat guilty that it took his death to make me appreciate him more fully because he just seemed like an amazing mind and an amazing, kindhearted person.
My hope is that now the posthumous attention he seems to be getting (a lot of folks seem to be in the eame boat as us) will eventually lead to having an outsized place in the narrative of popular music. He was too humble to ever care about that kind of thing as his legacy, but I think it's totally deserved.
I hope people discover his principles too. So impressive.
So many great women recorded by Steve. Joanna newsome , pj Harvey , scout niblet, Kim deal, Nina nastasia, anni rossi, Shanon wright, Edith frost, etc. Drum sound, try Nina nastasia playing with Jim white on drums recorded by Steve. The room sound that Steve captures is like the final band member often forgotten. Don’t forget he was the advocate of gorgeous ANALOG recording when it was almost abandoned.
So many records ripe for (re)discovery. Going to check out the last one you mentioned for sure.
@@lostmixtapesI know you love Neil young. Try Steve’s work with Jason Molina in all his guises. The Nina album is YOU FOLLOW ME, try to listen to the LP, it is magical.
@@wickedexile4531 I’m a fan of Molina (more of the later stuff), but have more to discover there. Will definitely check out that Nina album. Thanks!
i'd never heard of edith frost but she sounds spectacular on her own and lucky for her, she didn't have to be in a band with black francis! he's a homely nerd who long ago knew that "this is where i belong" and "winterlong" were great songs so i can't or won't badmouth him. kim and i were born in same town and i was in same room with her but i never said a word.
RIP Steve he was imstrumental in giving us some of great music of all time
But for me there is only 1 producer
Tom Wilson
Produced : Like a Rolling Stone
Electrified : Sound of Silence
Signed : Mothers of Invention
Produced : VU Sunday Morning song
Produced ; VU White Light : White Heat
I think there is a movie or documentary in the works ( cant wait )
It is crazy he worked his magic on so many of those iconic records. Would love to see a documentary on him.
Speaking of Black Francis and ego issues, just learned not long ago that Paz got booted from the band. There was a statement about her leaving and then when she as asked she was like "yeah I'm just as surprised as you are to hear this" so it seems maybe Francis hasn't grown much since the 90's.
Yeah, it’s clearly his band now. She seemed like a good fit though.
or the.... or the....
How would you rank Pixies albums
Doolittle > Surfer Rosa > Bossanova > Trompe Le Monde. What about you?
@@lostmixtapes exactly the same
Great album but there's nothing special about the production and mixing on it. Pretty lo-fi without a ton of dynamics. Could have been so much rowdier than it is.
