Saturday's Wrench Ep.25: Half a Roller! - Honda CB350 Build
Переглядів 8 тис.8 років тому
The build process has been a bit random up to late due to some walls I've hit with the rear wheel spacing, top clamp issue and not having my carb boots fit. I believe I may have sorted out the rear wheel issue in this video and I elongate the carb boot holes to make them fit. With the rear wheel, this may not be a very safe solution to my problem so I will have to look into it a bit further but...

    Don't forget to put your Kickstarter Spring BACK ON, if you rotate the engine without it your transmission will bang against it. If your kickstarter is fine and your a newbie (and its your own personal bike), i'd honestly leave that part alone

    Tony, these videos have been an incredible education in an endeavor I had no intentions of going to this level, but once I started I could not stop. As I am sure you are aware once you dive you’re committed, so I have slowly and methodically been tearing everything down, cleaning individual parts and I am finally approaching the fun part with the rebuild. As I was watching this video, I made note of the fact that my spark plugs had no “washer” on them when I removed them. Do you know was size aluminum “drain plug” washer Jeff used for the spacing on the spark plugs ? Thanks Tony

    Buy a inch lb torque wrench and covert the ft lbs to inches if your 3/8 tq wrench doesn’t go below 10ftlbs

    Sweeet bike dude (I know this was posted 5 years ago but I’m just catching up..). Always amazes me how you guys take the time/effort to bring these excellent vids to us, thank you very much. I love this vintage of bikes and dragging an old style bike into the new century with practical up-grades is exactly where I’m at too. Any more projects in the offing? Look forward to em. Perfect beard and teeth too - oh to be young again.😂😂😂

    Hey! Thanks for the videos! Super helpful. I'm in the midst of a rebuild and am learning so much. Something I'm struggling to see in the manual and videos is how the clutch plates are supposed to align in the basket. Between every 4 tooth there's a notch. Should I stack the plates back together so this notch is lined up for all the plates, or is this notch supposed to be offset? I'd appreciate any help! Thanks!

    Man, this series has been super helpful. Thank you! If you use a Tsubaki or other flat link cam chain you will not be able to get the second cam bearing in. The cam will not lift high enough. The issue is the rubber on the cam sprocket lifts the flat plates of the Tsubaki chain off the sprocket just enough that the cam won’t lift up high enough. I used a dremel with a mini sanding drum to buzz off the outer 1/8” of rubber so the chain sits all the way on the sprocket. I still had to bolt the valve cover down to get enough clearance to tap the second cam bearing into place.

    Hey there, just wondering how the Shine Seal is holding up on Iris’s polished parts? I’m just rebuilding my forks on my 77 XS500 and noticing some wear on the fork lowers finish (OEM finish). Debating on polishing and refinishing them. Any info on the Shine Seal product and maintenance you did after (if there was any) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for posting your videos they’ve helped me a ton :)

    I've tried everything to get the oil lock nut off with the spanner tool I acquired from Common Motor, but to no avail. I'm pretty sure I got all of the tabs pushed back. I get the spanner engaged. I've used the penny method and it does not hold the engine. I've had my bonehead housemate (did I type that outloud) hold the left side with a 14mm wrench as well. Again, it would not budge. Again, I believe the tabs are all pushed back. Any thoughts on the problem and what I should try next.

      I scrubbed everything thoroughly in a parts scrubber will with varsol. I used high temperature spray paint on the engine but I’m not sure I would recommend the paint job unless absolutely necessary bc if you spill ANY gas on the engine, which you will a lot let’s be honest, and don’t notice it the gas will eat the paint right off. It’s happened on multiple locations on my engine. Thanks for the kind words and I’m happy to inspire you to get to work :)

    • @SaturdaysWrench
      @SaturdaysWrench 4 роки тому

      The engine was well used when I purchased the old bike but the tensioner was actually in very good shape before we replaced it. No idea of total miles off the top of my head, would have to dig up the old tachometer. None of that really mattered to me since I knew I was doing a full rebuild.

  • @readysetnogo
    @readysetnogo 4 роки тому

    Just a friendly tip, stick a penny between the drive gears on the top side to keep the engine from turning over when loosening everything. It will destroy the penny, but is softer and won't destroy your gears in the process. Also the plastic and metal in the bottom of the case is most likely from the original cam chain rollers/pulleys drying out and getting chewed up over the years.

      Thanks man.. not in the foreseeable future. I just had a baby this year so I’ve put everything on the back burner for now. Eventually I’ll redesign some aspects for Iris, like the seat and handlebars and probably foot pegs and readjust the riding position.
