A place to dump content I feel like creating... a cathartic outlet, if you will...
I like documenting my hobbies and projects. I'm a biologist, I have two snakes, (a corn snake and a ball python), and I like drawing (mainly fish) so these things are typically the main focus of this channel. I did a PhD and it was awful, so you can expect content regarding my problems with academia as well. I also occasionally discuss other subjects important to me in form of video essays. Sometimes I also make content about mindless, inane things I want to share.

Moving from France to Germany with 2 Snakes, 23 Plants and 1 Slug (my python tried to escape)
Welcome to my moving vlog - a tale of stress, bad planning, a mid-drive highway snake escape, and some good old fashioned speeding (watch to find out if I keep my driver's license). Join me as I document how I moved my snakes (a corn snake and a ball python), plants, pet slug and a glass terrarium from France to Germany in my car. Moving with pets isn't easy - especially if said pets are reptiles that come with terrariums that can't really be transported in a VW Polo. Want to find out how she did it? Well, here's how...

Macro Lens for Snake Photography - Panasonic Lumix G Macro 30mm f 2.8 Test Footage

An attempt at filming and photography featuring a ball python, a corn snake, a mystery pet reveal and my new macro lens. I'm not an expert on how to photograph reptiles, all I did was pop the lens onto my camera (a Panasonic GH5) and do an impromptu snake photoshoot. Taking that into consideration, I think the footage turned out quite well - and if a total newbie like me can produce decent imag...
Casting a Fossil in Resin after my Snake Destroyed It - Repair & Restoration

If it looks like they are hanging out together, sitting on top of eac...
Target Training Fails & A Vet Visit - A Somewhat Chaotic Corn Snake Update

Why Heat Mats are Bad

A brief explaination on why heat mats are a bad primary heat source for reptiles - probably most relevant for people who keep snakes (such as ball pythons and corn snakes) as well as leopard geckos, as these animals are often kept on a heat mat set up. Hopefully this will show you that when looking at the heat lamp vs heat mat debate from a scientific perspective, it is quite clear which is the...

Where did you get your thermostat
who's ever reading this don't buy a heat pad to keep your snake warm, it could possibly die. 😢
As a professor, I put my stress level at 8. It was a 9 last spring! I have the schools worst Dean making really stupid decisions.
Woke administrators with 6-figure salaries making stupid decisions that has nothing to do with creating great education!
Just a comment from someone who grew up in Africa...and know a bit of their natural habitat and (wild) behaviour: A lot of people preach the BS of your snake getting "stressed" if your enclosure is too large. BS...BS...BS to the 10th power. These snakes DO get stressed in wide open spaces, yes - not because of the wide (or large) space, but because of the openness. They perceive that as a potential threatening habitat, since it leaves them vulnerable for any (animal) attack from above. Keep it cramped full of shelters, logs, leaves...household items - blankets, chairs, kitchen utensils (no knives), boxes, whatever...and they'll feel right at home. If your home is (fairly) packed, with lots of interesting corners for the snake to explore and items to slither over and under...let them go!! These snakes (in the wild) can travel huge distances every night searching for food or a mate, before returning to the burrow in the early morning. Distances ranging from 500m to 5km - per night. No wonder being kept in a drawer/rack causes them to "ball"... It's like telling Einstein he's not allowed to think. Excellent approach you followed...just a pity that not more ball python keepers adopt this approach.
Thank you so much. I accidentally broke my son’s fish fossil he gets from school. I going to try this.
and the slug!! i wanna know about the slug !! was it in the car with you

The subtle art of academic publishing is of vital importance to the scientist. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin (perish!). Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can, on no account be neglected. Thus it is that in academia chase, the victorious scientist only seeks publication after the paper has been written, whereas scientist who is destined to be defeated first do actual scientific work and afterwards looks for publication. One may know how to publish first without being able to do scientific work first. The whole secrets in academic publishing is in confusing the enemy, so that he cannot fathom our real intent. Never publish first, never win! Thus the expert in publishing research papers moves the enemy, and is not moved by him.
I 100% relate with you. After getting my PhD and going abroad for postdoc, I finally got a permanent position in France. And you know what, it's even worse after... 3 years in and I'm already following a therapy for depression, experiencing panic attacks everytime I go to work. Why? Because I am bullied by older researcher, it's an endless cycle
This is pretty interesting. I've been keeping Iguanas for 30 years and always had CHE and heat mats, then later swapped the heat mats for a tubular heater. With the newest setup, I have also aquired a halogen lamp (reptile systems are amazing). So a 75W halogen, a 150 W CHE, and a 200W tubular heater, all on thermostats. The enclosure is a little 1.70 by 2 by 1m and ambient temps range between 27 to 30 Celsius and basking up to 40. The iguana is definitely loving his place. On sunny days, the sun will spot-heat a couple places for an hour or so, and in summer I tend to open the window and put the animal on a box to absorb the real deal for a few hours (as long as he can take it). My old boy didn't like the heat, though, started panting after 10 min and only stayed there when I closed the sheens. He was very healthy for 19 years, with CHE, heat mat, and tubular heater. :-)
I gave my baby hog nose a 50 gallone enclosure and he is always exploring. When hes an adult ill have him in a 4x2x2. To think people have them in 20gals their whole life is insanity
I love this video. I like to tell people that the actual minimum should be twice that of the minimum generally accepted.
I never went to college and would rate myself a 3 on the happiness scale. I'm not satisfied with my life, but I don't believe that going to college would have necessarily made me any happier. The irony, though, is that I do feel my inaction has contributed to my unhappiness. Reading your comments made me reflect on what happiness really means-to live, laugh, and love. It’s about having meaningful connections with friends and mentors that uplift you. Those positive relationships seem far more important for earning respect and finding fulfillment than anything 'academia' alone can offer.
My Thermostat Turms off after 3 min what can I do

My ball python Morpheus does this too. He gives me little kisses and then acts really surprised, even though we've been doing this almost every day for 10 years.
Nice! Very enjoyable video and some great tips. 😊
First of all: THANK YOU. I know I'm late to the party, but I wish I had found this video when you published it, as I was starting my PhD (in biomed related stuff). I just felt so validated and the feelings you described, the treatment of international students and the ridiculous demands of supervisors (who would otherwise be pretty friendly people) resonated so much with my experience that...I could have written the script for this video :') It has taken some time (and therapy) for me to come to terms with the Ponzi scheme that is academia. It's been sad, and frustrating, because as a first generation researcher, I came to this field with all the passion and motivation inspired by this pure idea of Research as something so beautiful and at the service of the community...and then it was all crushed by the reality of "publish or perish" and the likes. I particulary resent academia for this seemingly predatory behaviour it has on first-gen students and people coming from certain underprivileged conditions. If you don't have any academic in the family, you have no idea how toxic and out of reality certain academic places can be. And you are lured by the prospect of "being paid to study" and the prestige and the service you're doing to the community. And then you realize you are only human, can only do so much, but your supervisor and the whole system don't seem to care for you or your well-being. Only thing that matters are experiments and manuscripts. Well, if any overworked PhD or postdoc (or any academic) is reading this line: YOU MATTER. YOUR WELL-BEING MATTERS. No service to human knowledge is so important that you have to sacrifice your life and your precious time on this planet to be miserable for it. Believe me, you can be as (if not more) impactful to your community, family, friends, without losing your sanity and health. Please take care.
@@Nimweh while I can’t say I’m glad the video resonated with you, I appreciate your thoughtful comment and I hope you were able to recover from your experience in academia! This is exactly why I made this video- I wanted to share my perspective because, despite what my environment sometimes made me believe - I knew I can’t be the only one who feels this way about the system.
I love this enclosure so much! Using it as inspo as im researching to get my first snake. And she is beautiful!
Great work.
You ever worried about your snake burning itself on the cage of your heating element? I imagine the cage gets hot too being in such close proximity to the heat source.
@@Kae5K luckily, the cage does its job and doesn’t heat up that much. You can still touch it with your hand without danger, so I’m not worried about the snake coming into contact with it. But the cage is absolutely necessary for this type of heat source
does this society need extra research for living longer, inventing new plastics, new technologies, new biologies? We know enough. We only need to start reshaping the world according to WHAT WE KNOW ALREADY
Humans always want to know more things, it's in our nature. To force people not to learn is ridiculous and very dangerous, too.
we ve become too specialised, where is the appreciation of the homo universalis?
14:38 so can I buy any human finger?
@@QuavyQua I’d recommend using one already attached to you (those can typically be used for free)
2:47 I actually found a way around this problem! I run my heat mat on the inside of my vivarium instead of the outside, and cover the entire hot 3rd of the enclosure floor with heat tape that both seals the mat to the glass, and spreads the heat out. I also use a very large slab of stone from a tile store or garden center to go on top of this! This keeps the critter from digging to the heat tape or mat, seals in the heat better than if the mat were on the outside, and requires much more energy to heat or cool the substrate with the mat, leaving a lot of thermal mass and a much slower, more stable gradient thanks to both the tape and the rock. Only use this if you have at least 3 inches of substrate on top of the stone. I use this heat mat as a secondary/tertiary heat source for the hot hide of my leopard gecko during the hottest 8 hours of the day to reduce splooting and keep air temperatures on the ground up in the winter. They are best used specifically for hot hides and warm hides, not to keep the overall air temperature up any more than an inch above the ground. Doing it my method with a rock is only suitable with glass enclosures, and makes the entire process more delicate, also introducing risk of breaking things, but it definitely evens out the temps.
Maybe you could put the vinyl contact paper on the inside next time to waterproof it?
I work in the private sector in a multi disciplinary technical engineering and science field and I feel great. 10/10 I am actually reviewing PhD applications and how little researchers are paid makes me confused why anyone wants to do a PhD.
Loving your BP videos. Your views are closely aligned to mine and it's wonderful to see someone expressing an interest in what's best for our snakes based on observation and understanding of biology. Can you imagine a world where the conventional wisdom was that dogs do not ever need to leave the house simply because people had never taken them for walks and seen just how important it is for their behavior? That's where conventional BP care is at. The reality is that no terrarium will ever be large enough for most BPs to live in forever. They will explore as much of the world as you let them and as long as they are safe doing so, they will benefit from it greatly. Many BP keepers are starting to discuss this subject, but the next great frontier will be when people start to realize that BPs are capable of thinking, feeling, and, do I dare say it, affection. They are not the robotic mindless machines many think of them as.
@@MatthewGleed very well put! Glad you view BP care the same way as I do, and it’s nice that some people within the hobby are starting to become more interested in evidence and welfare-based keeping practices - I hope the trend continues to grow
I don’t know how I feel about this. On the one hand, I empathize. On the other hand, just like the NBA or any other elite group, no one is entitled to be in it. Yes there’s more supply than demand but academia (like the NBA) is looking for the best people. Things like “banning overtime” sends shivers down my spine. Maybe there should be two systems. One more feminine one with a focus on work/life balance and more recreation. And another for folks who wanna be the absolute best academics they can be. Imagine telling someone like Michael Jordan he’s not allowed to train so hard because a bunch of subpar basketball players can’t keep up. That makes zero sense. And when I hear things like “micro aggressions” those are terms that hold no basis in reality. They’re words that proponents of a certain ideology (usually far-left) believe are true and wish to force on everyone else. That seems more like bullying to me. Mixed feelings about this vid. I think there’s lots of room for improvement on the side of academia (esp OP traveling and then entering a lab where almost no one spoke french). But on the other hand, I do feel that being in academia, researching FOR A LIVING, and on the dime of the taxpayer (who not only has no say in this but who also has to FREAKING PAY for the research they helped fund) is a huge ‘privilege’ (to use the lexicon of the far left). No one is entitled to that. I think a better critique of academia is how comfy it is with exploitation. Specifically the whole adjunct situation.
@rjyoungling220 I think you are just an ignorant male Chauvinist. 1) 40 hour work week with work life balance is not a privilege or something reserved for the "feminine". It is a basic human right. 2) Just because you don't understand something doesn't or you did not experience it does not mean it is far left. It is better to keep your insensiblities down if you don't get it. 3)Science is as essential to human society just like any other public spending. If you have a grudge for spending tax money in science please go to a forest and start your own civilization there because everything you take for granted like the electricity powering your home to the electronic device you are using right now is a product of scientific research. See point 2. Keep your insensiblities to yourself if you do not have the capacity to understand. It is not a privilege reserved for the "geniuses" to work in science. Yes the root cause of the problem is the oversupply of PHds and limited funding. There has to be fair systems to limit PHd intake, and regulate their pay and working condtions. There is nothing "genius" in being exploited and overworked. It is an exploitative system that takes advantage of people passionate in science.
You know researchers are also tax payers, right? We all pay taxes, and to complain about some of that money being put into research for the betterment of society is shocking.
I'm one of those people your channel is aimed at. I have a gargoyle gecko,a leopard gecko and will be getting an adult hognose(wild type morph) from a breeder once his home is set up. Pretzel will be the last pet I get and my first snake. No reason to deworm my few creatures. If in your shoes,I also would not have dewormed the snakes for the same reason you didn't. And your intro video is charming.
You’re funny. Beautiful noodle and thank you for the video.
As a latinamerican When you said, "there's no future or stability in academia at least here in EUROPE" that completly blew my mind For us the academic dream is impossible in latinamerica and we always joke about escaping it, probably to europe or us/Canada, but you're saying that Europe isnt stable either, and american phD students have been complaining for years So its probably not feaseable anywhere Im glad im seeing this just after getting rejected from my masters program and getting an office job in the mean while Maybe its Best i dont return to that world
Eggcelent video, thank you for sharing your opinion and experience, at the same time I hope you are recovering from that and become even stronger💪🏻! I also had terrible PhD experience in Denmark, as a foreign female student coming to a highly toxic lab (cancer research). My supervisor is a sexual predator on his young students and employees, while his wife works in the same lab.He is well known in the field and has a permanent position in the Institute, where no prevention and protection net existed back then.Since I was a foreign student from middle Europe nobody cared.Sexual harassment, bullying and sexism, burn out was my everyday bread. Finally,I managed to defend the thesis, but was completely broken down and left academia immediately.I switched to data engineering and are much happier now at home country.Working with computer codes is more predictable and logical than with my former "colleagues". The predator still works in the Institute, even after I complained a lot.New PhD students are coming...I wished someone warned me before I came there, but everybody was silent and ignorant, including senior female researchers and group leaders. Academia is broken
That's terrible. If they do not take action against sexual harassment that's the most regressive place to exist. Imagine calling themselves first world countries. I'm glad you were able to finally get out of it. Good luck.
I work in construction. One of my worst cuts was from the staples on some osb. As someone that wears gloves despite the heckling, it still got me.
Seems like you had an adventures ride😅 A comparison between Germany and France would be cool
A while ago I thought that’s a little bit unfortunate that I probably will not be able to do a phd etc. But after watching your video and a French documentary about a archeology phd student in France I feel different about it because most of the time it’s probably not worth it
Just what I was looking for awesome video and nice edits ☺️👍
The snakes are not dangerous?
Hah, wonderful, I screwed together my terrarium 2 days ago, and the water seal and caulking was exactly the thing i was interested about
Hi! i'm about to build a terrarium with osb wood. I'm going crazy about heating system. I'm pretty worried about fire risk. I was thinkin about ceramic heater (that's how I found u) but now I see this... is deep heat projector safer?
A halogen flood bulb is the most natural and beneficial primary heat source. I don’t know too much about using/building wooden enclosures, but make sure the bulb is hooked up to a dimmer or dimming thermostat to regulate it, and put a lamp cage/guard around it so it isn’t exposed.
Osb is a terrible choice. Wow. Next time ask for help from a carpenter.
Do it better, before you talk shit

I am glad you have the opportunity to share your feelings and connect with others here. I think a lot of people getting out of the academic system have post-traumatic stress, perhaps even PTSD. Regardless of a diagnosis, however, a major part of one’s recovery from any relational trauma is to share those experiences with others. Therefore, stories like these are very helpful for all of us who have been abused by this system. Keep seeking connection with others. Regarding any effects on the system, however, I am not sure that speaking out about experiences is enough to change it. I’m not sure if that is your goal, but I’m hoping to brainstorm. There is no clear path to fixing the system, and therefore, most accounts lack an evident call to action. I think that everyone with deep experiences and/or investment academia realizes these issues. This makes all of us feel rather nihilistic or apathetic. One major problem is that people who find videos like these are already too deep in the system and/or have no idea how to actually change it, myself included. I’ve tried talking to my friends outside of academic about such problems, but they never seem to understand how deep and systematic these issues are. Many of them to assure me that my experiences are uncommon… but they’re not. As a result, I fully expect them to keep happening, which certainly brings about a feeling of learned helplessness. Is there any other path other than accepting these problems and submitting to those who perpetuate them in the hopes of advancing their own career? I think we have collectively decided that it is not worthwhile to speak out to preserve any hope in our desperate passion to pursue research. It was only this year that I started getting more heavily involved in the world of academia. I want to continue at nearly any cost but I still feel severely depressed and anxious about the landscape.
Reason why the snake didn't last longer under the ceramic emitter is because it gotten warm faster. It had to staid underneath the projector longer because it took longer to warm the snake up. I've place both in my snake enclosure far apart from each other and my snake rather to be underneath the ceramic instead of the projector.
Deep heat projectors actually heat them more effectively than ceramic bulbs. The sun produces infrared A and B. These wavelengths (especially IRA) penetrate deep into the skin tissue and heat them far more effectively. Halogen bulbs are the most natural and beneficial option since the levels of IRA and IRB they produce most closely mimic the sun. Deep heat projectors produce IRB and a little bit of IRA. Ceramic bulbs, on the other hand, only produce infrared C, which only heats the surface of their skin. Therefore CHEs are better used for nighttime/supplementary heat and not as the primary heat source.
Here is the advice I give new PhD student or thinking to do PhD: PhD is the best fit for people who love to discover new knowledge and enjoy working long hours despite a high chance of failing in any specific experiments. If this is not you then PhD is not for you.
This is one of my go-to videos while setting up our OSB terrarium. Thanks! (Also the follow-ups are great)
Im one of the one human beings yaaay
Getting a PhD is like a dream of mine, but everything I see everywhere convinces me not to :( I am still in my first year of bachelor's, so there's plenty of time to prepare and stuff but I can't decide whether I wanna do it after all.
Well, why is it your dream? That matters more. A lot of people say they want to get a PhD and when you ask them why, they don’t seem to have a very deep answer
It is also a numbers game. The PhD candidates outnumber the stable faculty positions. So a lot of PhD students and Postdocs spend years training for a job that they can never have. A lack of results can be stressful for the student and the supervisor.
