- Catfish, hybrid snakes and ...crabs? Join me as I ramble about all the beautiful creatures I would love to keep as pets but probably never will because I don't have the time and funds for anything that isn't super low maintenance.
Sources mentioned in the video - I tried to directly cite all photos and footage used in my video, however, I got most of the hybrid snake pictures from a series of tumblr posts covering different crosses (check them out if you want to see even more):

your so underrated! i came across your channel today and was pleasantly suprised with a comforting community! Keep up the up the good work Cathy!
Aw, thank you! Glad you enjoy my content, I'm definitely planning to make more :)
One of your choices ( except catfish- which are delicious…lol) is one of my favs and the Rainbow boa. I found some babies at a reptile expo recently but I realized I didn’t have a suitable home prepared so I passed, reluctantly. Never understand the developing morph market for this species because the “normals” are beautiful already
I agree, I don’t know how morph breeding could improve the appearance of the wild-type rainbow boa!
Animals! I loved watchigg my this. And i selfishly needed to add my own in the comments. My list:
1. Probably in the future: rosy boa or hognose (small, cute, handleable snakes), blue death feigning beetles (adorable), african fat tailed gecko (cute cousin of the leopard)
2. Unlikely but possible: ball pythons in wacky colors (i would prefer to adopt animals also but if i found some breeder with reasonable standards id consider it. Maybe selfish of me but i would give it a good life- this would only be if i had much more space ofc), red eyed crocodile skinks (theyre literally so cute but not friendly at all), an aquarium setup with brightly colored shrimp or maybe a crayfish, or african dwarf frogs (again, finding ethical breeders is hard), pigeons or finches (i find domestic birds really interesting and would love to try raising them. Would need a lot of time and space)
3. Never gonna happen: chameleons ( chameleons are soooo sweet and i love them, they have such specific care requirements and short lives though), monkey tailed skinks (largest skink in the world, likes living in groups, incredibly rare and pricey, has one baby at a time that it carries around), hermit crabs (i had hermit crabs as a teenager and they died due to me not grasping their care requirements as they are very difficult; i still feel bad about this and if i had infinite space and money i would do so much research but theyre still basically impossible to ethically source), giant japanese or chinese salamanders, and spiny softshell turtles (females get pretty big)
since you were on the topic of a snake cafe my dream is a mini zoo/art exhibit with terrariums however also sculptures of the snakes because some are so tiny, and i would keep in captivity a bunch of species that generally dont do well: dekays brown snake, northern red bellied snakes and various blind snakes that are teeny tiny. Like,
Nice list! I never even heard of death feigning beetles or monkey tailed skinks but they both look pretty adorable!
With the amount of ball pythons on the market it would probably be possible to adopt or buy a common morph "second hand". In Germany alone two massive collections of pythons recently got surrendered to animal rescues, so now hundreds of "fancy" morphs are looking for new homes.
A giant salamander would probably also be an amazing "dream" pet, I completely forgot about those guys!
And the mini zoo/art gallery sounds like an awesome idea, I would definitely visit such a place if it existed.
Omg, I had to stop the video at 8:21 to comprehend what I was seeing. I have a BRB and I never saw a setup like that. Poor BRB in their boxes and water bowls, I couldn't keep mine like that.
You are right for the humidity, pretty high 90 to 99% when they are young. Mine will be 1 yo in 3 days and I keep her at about 88% now.
I have to upgrade her vivarium and I am looking for ideas (this is how I found your channel). She is almost 36", the length of her vivarium right now, and I am searching for the perfect enclosure. I have a bioactive vivarium with Isopods and springtails. They are fun to watch.
yeah, it's crazy how bad some people's set ups are - the snake keeping hobby in general has a problem with abysmally low standards that completely disregard animal welfare.
Nice to read that your snake has a good set up, best of luck with the upgrade! if I had a BRB I'd also consider going bioactive (I am also considering switching my two current snakes to bioactive but that is a future project). I probably wouldn't use OSB as a material for a BRB enclosure though as I think waterproofing it would be too much of a hassle...
Rewatching this and was reminded that the now very rare kākāpō was sometimes kept as a pet and was said to have a dog like temperament. Obviously not a possible pet option these days though haha.
Thanks for rewatch! A lot of parrots make amazing albeit very high-maintenance pets due to their intelligence and character, I’m sure the kakapo would be no exception. Hopefully the population becomes large enough that they are no longer critically endangered someday… Not sure how many decades/centuries it would take before they would be viable as pets though!
I loved this video ! The kind of thing I think about all the time 😂
For me-
Probably in the future- whites tree frogs, gargoyle gecko (I keep similar species already, feel they could fit into my daily life and I could deliver a good quality of life for them), bearded dragon
Unlikely but possible- leachianus (mostly due to their price), rainbow boa (they are soo beautiful but for the same reasons as you I will likely never own one), dart frogs (more likely but not in the near future- due to their care being relatively complex e.g humidity), axolotls- find them absolutely fascinating, especially their regenerative abilities (feel I sadly couldn’t deliver the highest level of care due to their complex needs), hognoses and tokays (I don’t think their generally spicy personalities are for me 😂 I need a more chilled animal), Vietnamese mossy frogs, knob-tailed gecko, pictus/ ocelot gecko (i feel there is not enough research into the keeping of these animals in captivity)
Never going to happen- chameleons (I absolutely adore them but their care needs are so much more complex than people realise and they have relatively short lives)
Leopard tortoise (I again adore these guys!!! But they get massive and overall I couldn’t deliver the correct level of care one would require)
Can I ask how u make ur thumbnails? They are fantastic! As a new (reptile) UA-cam creator I would love to create videos half as good as urs.Ur channel is massively under subbed. Hope u blow up soon.
Hi there! Thanks for your comments! Sounds like you really thought about this quite extensively! I hope you will able to expand your collection at some point in the future.
Glad you like my content! I make my thumbnails using Clip Studio Paint, which is actually an illustration software (it works a bit like photoshop, which I used before it got crazy expensive). I also have a graphics tablet which helps when selecting, cutting out and editing different images and elements together, as well as with handwriting text. The images I tend to use are either my own or royalty free stock images. I know there are also free softwares that are made specifically to create visually appealing video thumbnails, but I am not familiar with those. Anyway, good luck with your UA-cam journey! The most important thing is to enjoy the process of creating the content you make!
@@CatharticOutlet thank u so much for taking the time to reply!!
And thank u so much for all the info!!! Ur thumbnails are super creative 👌
I only have a little experience with procreate but I do have quite a lot with the app sketches on the iPad. So maybe I will give that a shot :)
Thanks again! Keep up the great content !
Hi Cathy, I recently started doing lots of research on keeping royal pythons and was very excited to embark on this journey with my family. My children were supper excited but unfortunately my wife wasn't. To cut a long story short my wife felt there was to much of a risk of catching salmonella with the children only being young. She also dosent have the same love for Royals as myself and the children do 😆. My question is, have you done any research on the risk of salmonella as I see your python exploring your living space and having the time of her life. Seeing you have a biology background I thought this maybe something you have researched. My self and the children are so disappointed as I personally know what good pets they make (especially royals or ball pythons) after keeping snakes as a teenager. I can't seem to ease my wife's fear of, omg it's a snake it's going to eat me lol 😆.
I'm not really an expert in infectious diseases, so I can't give you a proper answer here. In the case of reptiles you might get it from coming into contact with their feces and any fecal residue in their enclosure, as well as bad quality feeder rodents (where the reptiles can ge the salmonella from). I think if you are careful to wash your hands after handling and feeding the snakes and cleaning the enclosure it should be fine, but ultimately you cannot eliminate the risk completely. I definitely don't always wash my hands immediatelly after holding the snake, and apparently having them roam all over one's place is also a risk but it's a risk that, in my opinion, is low enough that I'm willing to take for my convenience and the wellbeing of the animal. Than again, I also like tasting raw cake batter, so I'm not really a good example here (so far it's worked out for me). Ultimately, in my case, I only endager myself. The CDC says no reptiles for children under 5, so maybe that is reasonable. On the other hand, you can get all sorts of nasty infections and diseases from cats (inlcuding salmonella) but people tend to care less about those risks and the danger they pose for children for some reason...
love this video ..my dream pet is a ball python like yours !hope to get one soon n I have a aquarium with goldfish I love n 4 society finches.both easy care pets. milk snakes are pretty .hope you get one .in meantime more of your python videos 🐍😍
Nice, goldfish and finches sound like fun pets! And you're in luck, the next video will be python-related!
wow can't wait !
yes I love my birds n goldfish eat from my fingers they 5 yr old in a 30 gal tank..I love your BP I'm excited to see next video
Schlangenstube währe nice👍👍
But where are Californian quails on that list? I mean CALIFORNIAN QUAILS✨
They look super cool! If I were to consider bird species they would be included on the list. However, birds are too stressful for me lol
Loved the video.
glad you enjoyed it! :)
Good to hear from you again🙂.
I don’t dream anymore, I’m old🤷♂️.
never to old to do stuff! unless you physically cant do it! haha! but in all seriousness youre never too old to dream! enjoy life while you can because you only live once! (unless you believe youre reborn in a new life after death) nothing metal has an age limit and should be enjoyed by everyone!
Likewise!
And it's never too late to dream! Even if not every dream becomes reality, the act of imagining things and striving towards them can still be rewarding.

🙂 I wanted to ask you, how well is the heat projector working for your osb enclosure?
😊
@@gerald4055 So far so good, no issues maintaining the temperature and the snake still seems to be basking more than when she did with the ceramic heat emitter.
@@CatharticOutlet
Thank you. I’m about to setup a used melamine enclosure I bought in the spring. I’m glad yours is still working for you. I’ll order Arcadia projector today.😊
