Downscaling Chronicles Mini: RetroTink 4K 480i output and 240p menu fix
The RetroTink 4K has shifted into second gear for downscaling. An experimental firmware update fixes the OSD in 240p, and allows for interlacing via custom modelines, which means... 480i output! But there's a catch, watch this short update for more details.
Edit: Lag for 480p to 480i, or 480i passthrough with Gen Lock in the HDMI output settings is only 3msec! I was testing in triple buffer mode 🤦 In fact it is the same when downscaling to 240p

Downscaling Chronicles 12: The RetroTink 4K can Downscale! 1080p decimation to output 240p on a CRT
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 місяці тому
The RetroTink 4K is an AMAZING upscaler, but it has another trick up its sleeve; DOWNSCALING (well acshewly, DECIMATING). Not officially intended for downscaling, the Tink 4K's 'back door' feature can output 240p with custom modelines. It works exceptionally well to restore integer upscaled retro games to play on a standard definition CRT: Consoles such as the NES mini and SNES mini, and the An...
FINALLY! A DAC for the Analogue Pocket! Analogizer FPGA for crispy analog video to a CRT AND MORE!
Переглядів 6 тис.3 місяці тому
RndMnkIII’s Analogizer came just at the right time. While CRT gamers STILL wait for the much anticipated support for the official Digital to Analog Converter (DAC), the Analogue Pocket gets an unofficial DAC of its own, WITHOUT needing to run through the official Dock. The Analogizer plugs into the Analogue Pocket’s Gameboy cartridge port, and outputs 15KHz (and VERY SOON, 31KHz!) RGB/YPbPr via...

Downscaling Chronicles 7: Extron Super Emotia. Plug and Play 240p, better than the GBS Control?

The Extron Emotia/Super Emotia is a rare beast that can take a 480p input, and downscale to 480i and 240p with the flick of the non-interlace switch. It’s a true plug and play downscaler that requires no setup (just anHDMI to VGA DAC for the input), and no RGBHV sync combining. It’s also one of the few units to output composite and S-video, with selectable PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz video formats. ...

It also has an ‘experimental’ downscaling feature for 480i and 240p output. Thanks for explaining and comparing the phosphor line count. Nobody seems to mention that. So in a way the PVM tube is similar to say an Apple RGB monitor tube for the Macintosh that was aimed at 640x480 VGA. But there are things absent from a PVM as well, such as (stereo) speakers or Teletext, making them rather cumbersome for gaming. Not to mention the depth and weight. Also at bigger sizes the benefit starts to lessen, as bigger tubes have more lines as well. I find it very hard to qualify a 300€ PVM purchase when a 20€ Trinitron is good enough, and more what we used for our consoles in reality back in the days. Another real good screen is the Commodore 1084, which has a similar phosphor pitch as a PVM. For true high line count, for example for use with 80 character modes of old 8-bit home computers, the monochrome tubes still win. An Amber Philips 80 (BM7022) delivers a truly special experience.

    • @MarcoRetro316
      @MarcoRetro316 17 днів тому

      I made a whole separate video about phosphor line count and TV Lines and they are closely correlated. I love the PVM 14L5; Swiss Army knife of monitors with multi format resolutions. I’m naively oblivious with audio so stereo versus dual mono hasn’t bothered me too much but yes the mono speaker is a drawback, as well as the depth of these monitors. I’m making a new video on RGB modding that echoes your sentiments that a $20 Trinitron can be just as enjoyable and definitely good enough as an expensive Pro Monitor

    • @MarcoRetro316
      @MarcoRetro316 Місяць тому

      I unfortunately obtained all of my lag results with triple buffer turned on. It's actually only 3msec in all scenarios when outputting 240p, 480i passthrough and 480p to 480i. The RT5x has the same amount of lag, where as the OSSC Pro is a little mixed. Currently, Line Multiplier mode can drop 480p to 480i/240p with 0msec of lag. If downscaling with higher input resolutions using the Scaler Mode, then it's usually around 19msec, but can be as high as 36msec when downscaling 1080i to 480i. Depends if you want the end format to be RGB or Component. For RGB, an HDMI to VGA DAC followed by a sync combiner to combine HV sync to C sync. This is HDMI to VGA DAC is recommended by the MiSTer crowd but keep in mind that cheap DAC’s can be inconsistent quality a.aliexpress.com/_msF0FwG Followed by an HV sync combiner (I like these ones which convert VGA D-Sub15 to megadrive/Genesis 2 Din socket and passively combine HV sync) a.aliexpress.com/_m0xew7w And finally a Megadrive 2 to RCA/BNC a.aliexpress.com/_mNpzdgg If you want to convert HDMI to Component then it’s much cheaper. I’ve bought this DAC before and it works with 240p a.aliexpress.com/_mqnWqL6

    • @MarcoRetro316

      @@harrysacket you could theoretically do that with the RetroTink 4K with a custom modeline. Some Corio2 TVOne scalers *might* allow you as well with a similar concept of a custom resolution. I know the border on TVOne’s are blue by default and not sure you can change to black. Otherwise some Extron scalers like the IN1606 have several 768 vertical outputs with differing horizontal sizes for aspect ratio. They have image resizing controls that may allow you to pad the 720p input

So the ground where i can put him? Can you chiarify this thing for me? Please.... thanks a lot! Byeee 😉

    • @MarcoRetro316
      @MarcoRetro316 Місяць тому

      @@diegall there’s 3 wires soldered to the sensor: VCC in, ground, and VCC out. The VCC in/out will be the same voltage and the input voltage also powers the sensor. In my experience they’re great for around 3v in/out. You also need to open/close the appropriate A or B jumper pads to select the state, in this case the state is always on VCC out when pressed. It’s not that convenient a mod though as when the TV is powered on you need to remember to touch the sensor. Not that big of a deal but it was more of a novelty/proof of concept. I’ve gone back to using a mechanical switch

    Is it possible to connect something like an Analogue Duo or RetroUSB 'AVS' to the 5X pro's HDMI port? Or is that HDMI specifically designed to go out to your TV only? I just want the 5x Pro so i can use it's CRT filters, and possibly use it's component port for an actually SNES & Genesis.
