Implementing Animal Objects in Our Indie Game | Devlog #15
i have a question regarding art workflow: i using aseprite for my games and export spritesheet animations for players, enemies and so on. Most other engines lets you import that and you can override just the sprite sheet file if you change something on the file system (for example: i have player_sprites.png which is a 128x16 file which have 8 frames). My question is: how do you update your sprite sheet animations when you using an external program to make them ? do you reimport them everytime ? (As game maker imports them into their system the original file is not used for it anymore). Would be nice to know how other devs handle this :)
A couple options. Reimport is one yes. You can also edit the source file if you open in it in the file explorer.
But the source file has just one frame - not the frame animation right ?
@@nerdvision8031 That's right. We usually re-import when adjusting sprites, but occasionally we edit the source file for things like scenery or stagnant images.
it's more an over saturation probllem then dying. to many that don't stand out. the last metroidd naia i think that got any real praaise was unsighted and that plays more like a zelda game. tthats not even getting into what i call the spirtual sucessor problem.
Great video! As a UX designer who is working on his first game on Gamemaker a tutorial on how to integrate Gamemaker with steam would be amazing! Your work is inspiring!!!
I am so tired of videos lying about how easy it is to pick up gml.
lol I’m… sorry? Have you tried Sara Spaulding’s platform tutorial? They do a great job explaining it.
@@OandCoGames Yes I have, and you should talk to someone that isn't a already a programmer before making value judgements about what is and isn't easy to pick up.
@@eddieragowski1295 Okay :)
WOW! 05:30 What is this footage from Pass The Game 100dev's edition :D I took part in that project did you as well? :D
I was wondering if anyone would notice that easter egg ;) We had it just last week - we're somewhere in the 75-100 range.
@OandCoGames I was in the previous video "Darkroom" is My YT 😌
TetherGeist on Switch 2 confirmed with that "Enterprise" package for console ports 🤔🥳🤠
lol for real though.
For the love of God, will you stop using Pixel Art man?
lol impossible.
Question I am currently working on a project in game maker am I allowed to finish that project than purchase the license?
I assume so. Your save file shouldn't be impacted by which license you have, so long as you get the license when you want to go to market.
@2:16, this is too expensive for a developer who has a 90% chance of not making any profit from their game (when compared to the other free tiers on the market today). I will personally choose Godot for now, because i am most comfortable with nodes and how it is presented in that engine. Your game is certainly one of the BEST looking games to come out of Gamemaker tho, so I guess its all working for you!
Yeah, I suppose that's why they have the free tier.
I made my first game in Game Maker 5.3 in 6th grade - over 20 years ago. That’s crazy to think about.
Dang
I've been using this engine for YEARS. Lack of 3D support is probably the most notable knock against it. But it also wants to help you make a game. It doesn't make you jump through hoops like other engines. I love it because I can focus on being creative. The other area I have issues with is that in the past, they've changed their agreements and been bought and sold a lot. So, if I pay $99 now, there's a chance that they'll say "oh we're deprecating that entire platform and you have to go with version 3 now." They haven't done that since Opera bought them, but it still stings.
Yeah, honestly I felt like they did a good job using legacy agreements when Opera purchased. I'm optimistic Opera will hold on for a while...
Thanks, Jordan, for shining a spotlight on GameMaker, it is an engine that deserves more love. Today the position that some people take is very reductionist or tribal, when the reality is that it is good that there are so many options, according to one's knowledge or learning capabilities, budget, workflow choice, the type of game that one wants to make or where one is comfortable and can quickly develop. I agree with everything, I would only add to the honor roll 1up Indie, which is also a school on UA-cam of everything that is GameMaker for years, and also recently the official Game Maker channel that has been uploading very useful material. It's true that there are few places to seek wisdom about GM, for example Zenva recently added GameMaker courses. But for those few places, they are really pure gold and the Discord communities are very collaborative too. ❤
I agree about the tribalism. When you're asked what engine you use, it's OK to say "depends on the project."
Good call out on 1up Indie!
The thing I love most about GameMaker is that it makes SIMPLE things EASY to implement. You just want to move an object horizontally? Just do x += 10; BAM that's it you're done. Rotate 15 degrees counter-clockwise? image_angle -= 15; That's it, no reason to overcomplicate it You don't have to engage with any built-in shitty bloated systems like Unity makes you, and you always have the option to do everything your way and implement the wheel from scratch to spin exactly how you want it to spin In Unity you HAVE to use RigidBodies, Quaternions, Vector maths, etc. just to simply move or rotate your object in your basic 2D game, it's honestly baffling. Don't get me wrong, using these things makes a lot more sense in the context of a 3D game, where you probably never want to implement your own system for physics, etc. But man, Unity 2D is honestly just so ass compared to GM, people who claim it's "beginner-friendly" or "easy to use" just because of the countless tutorials (most of which show you conflicting, outdated or just very suboptimal solutions) just don't know what they're talking about. GameMaker pilled since 2018 and every time I give Unity another chance and try to implement some basic feature, looking it up it just hits me with 4 forum posts from 2006; 2 Stack overflow posts without a proper answer; Official Documentation for 3 different systems for doing the exact same thing, 2 of which are legacy and the other 1 is experimental; 1 GitHub repo with a custom library for the same thing, with 13 stars and last updated 7 years ago; 9 baby's first tutorial videos, each 20-30 minutes long, seemingly designed for people who don't know what a variable is. Like come on man, this is all just so frustrating when you know it can be so much simpler Sorry, you can tell I'm very passionate about this topic xd And thanks for reading this long rant
TetherGeist looks good. I heard Gamemaker will change the IDE from "workspaces" to one page to see all the code, sometime in 2025.
I started with GameMaker (big fan!) but ultimately switched to Unity because most tutorial creators for GM in my experience have moved on and/or their videos are outdated. Huge shoutout to the GM tutorial creators who got me hooked: @SaraSpalding, @peytonburnham4316, @FriendlyCosmonaut, @1upIndie.
I was not aware of Gamemaker at all. Thank you for this video!
Sure thing!
Been watching your videos for a while and only recently tried out the demo, but I am legit so excited for this game and made sure to back it on kickstarter as soon as it went live. What you all are making looks absolutely fantastic, keep it up!
You are the best! 🙏
I'll quote pirate software on this "there's no best engine, whatever you feel comfortable with is the best"
maybe a tutorial on how to get achievements working with game maker 2?
Honestly I’m considering making it yeah..
Please do
@@OandCoGames Agree, please do!
I didn't realize TetherGeist was a Gamemaker game! Gamemaker definitely deserves more love.
It’s a really great engine
How long does it take to compile your game? How do you just test a single level?
The first time I compile the game takes about 30 seconds. After that, about 5 seconds.
what does the axolotl provide for the gameplay is it like Navi from zelda or something else is the axolotl only for visuals and story if it is i wish it was bit more
It shows what type of dash you have next sort of like Maddy’s hair in Celeste
Something that isnt usually touched on that often as well is that performance wise its probably one of the faster engines for 2d games. Yes faster than unity and godot. Atleast for the defaults. Sure you can you can use unity dots and use c++ for godot, but those arent the easiest nor the defaults of their respective engines.
With today hardware, unless you are writing extremely bad codes, it is hard to imagine it would have performance issues for 2d game
Let's goooo! Huge congrats Jordan and O. and Co. team for crushing your 20k ($ CAD) goal! A proud backer of this one. :D
Looks great!!
The game looks delightful, looking forward to getting my Switch version and hoping we get the Xbox port too 🎉🎉
I think one reason for the low number of backers beyond the initial goal reached (congrats) might be the uninteresting rewards for reaching pretty big milestones. For example, while I think porting could be interesting, having 3 major milestones with languages that most backers won't speak or need because they can speak English might be a questionable decision. The only other interesting milestone would be the content update (expanded hubs). As a casual gamer (not a developer), I would assume that adding different languages should be a requirement, not a perk. I really don't mean to offend anyone with this post, it's just something that struck me as a bit odd personally.
This soundtrack is great though

I really enjoyed the demo and i hope this rise
I unfortunately can’t back it, but still the progress is great and I hope the backers increase ❤
congrats on achieving another milestone!
I'm so glad the Kickstarter went well. I've been watching ever since the first Devlog and I was more than happy to support the project. i look forward to doing the closed beta 😁
Thank you!!
Time's running out, but yall smashed it regardless! 400+ backers? For a small indie team? Such a great accomplishment and you guys should be so proud no matter how these next 3 days go!
Thank you! You're right, it really is a great accomplishment for us. We're extremely grateful.

@nicooftheforest yeah hahaha
zoooom
So excited to play it!
yaay! 3 days left
this looks so pretty, i love the detail that goes in this. and the gameplay looks enjoyable. i need this. ^^
my theory is that it is the furthest away from realistic so it has the opposite effect to the uncanny valley, you clearly can se is fake but then your brain makes it feel real
Beautiful video, thanks for sharing.
Please tell me the demo is on mac😢
It’s on our road map!
