    I switched from OMD EM1MK3 to Fuji X-T5, the 18 ~ 135 is my 1st choice of lens. reason being the image quality is good as a starter lens, and I have all the reach that I need. I forego the 16-50 mm kit lens due to this, and it's expensive to switch system, almost cost me a kidney. Since then, I had bought 35 f/1.7 and 75 f/1.2 primes to do street, looking forward either 13 or 23 primes to complete my set up. Interestingly the 18~135 fuji, over here is not that popular. I just wonder why?

    I began my transition from film (Canon A-1, Mamiya RB67) in 2006 with the 'new' Canon 400D, aka the Rebel XTi. There seems something prescient about this--look and you will see it! Anyway, after 40 years with Canon I jumped ship for Nikon, and the then 'new' D7100 in 2014. In that time, a lot of lenses were trialed-out and a solid kit of sports and best-copies were found. But I never liked the bulbous look and feel of the DSLR options of the time; and I was filled with enough oldtimer hubris to scoff at the rise of mirrorless options. The cost of them was pretty noxious as well--but tech in relation to function and the depth of my pockets had not caught up yet... Segue to March 2023 and entry into the Fuji universe with the newly released XT-5. Why? The DSLR stuff nearly killed my interest in making images--but when I picked up an XT5 sample I was immediately transported back to 1974 and the feel and excitement of of my first SLR, a Canon FT/QL. As you say, there is something solid, something that connects me with build, practice, and result. The Fuji body had it. I wanted to hold it, and work with it in ways like I did with my A-1's. Why did I look at Fuji over Nikon or something else? Two reasons. Fuji is a small company and has a history of making quality stuff with regular improvement. Second, the support community--both in third party gear and PEOPLE like you. A special shout out to Chris, aka Pal2Tech who is the undeniable everyman's Fuji professor. But yes, the users and the forums. And the BIGGEST thing--the ability to attach a Fringer adapter and bring all of that wonderful Nikkor glass to my little beast. But there are the tradeoffs, such as slow and sometimes erratic focus (exacerbated by the well known Fuji firmware issues), and POWER GOBBLING. Time to make a jump to a dedicated mount lens. Initially I went with Tamron 18-300mm many letters superzoom. Cost and convenience were the major factors. The Tamron is a nice lens, but a little soft and when doing faster paced street or event photography--too much damned lens. I did a year of that. Now the Fujinon 18-135 is the order of the day. Compact for what it does, with an F ring instead of that wheel, and sharp as a tack. Frankly, the little bit of IQ lost in the corners is really negligible and something that can be solved for in post. In over 50 years of film photography, it is proving to be the best small format zoom lens I have ever owned. And put together with some Smallrig paraphernalia for the body and handling--and it is my dream camera. To those who are teetering on the edge of a decision, just tromp over to MPB or similar and snag one of these used in the mid $400 range. You will not be sorry...

    Hei. I'm in my confusion RN. I have 2 lenses, Meike 35mm & Viltrox 56 f1.7 I'm about to get my very first fuji native lens. I can get XC 50-230 for $156 USD. But, If i sell my Viltrox, I'm about to get the used XF 55-200 for $323 USD. So, for the long term use & sports like mini soccer, running, football etc... , -- Is it worth sacrificing my Viltrox for the XF, -- or just get an XC instead + Vintage manual for the street person photo. Based on my case using my "friend's" (idk, just met him at some Local event) tamron 18-300 lens, I'm mostly going to use (ranked) 200mm mostly, 85 and 135mm

    The 18-135 is THE lens that every Fuji X- user should own. For me, it's my go-to lens 85 to 90% of the time. My collection consists of the 18mm F2 prime, 35 F2 prime, 18-135 zoom, and 100-400 zoom (lenses I actually use). I can't see me buying any more lenses, because these cover the entire practical range.

      It’s a strong statement, but I’d argue the OBSBOT Tail Air is designed for niche use cases like AI tracking and portability, rather than being a general-purpose or high-end 4K camera. Perhaps it’s not the best fit for what you need, but that's okay. There is no, true all-round camera that does everything for everyone.

    Hi there, I came across your video whilst researching a purchase of the Tail Air, I was wondering if you could elaborate on the Tail Air rendering on board, and I believe the Tiny doesn't do this? This would free up computer resources during my streams... Am I correct in my understanding? Thanks for any help...

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Hi there! Thanks for your comment. To clarify, the OBSBOT Tail Air processes features like AI tracking and 4K resolution internally, but it doesn’t perform full video rendering on-board. This means your computer will still handle some processing during streaming. The OBSBOT Tiny also relies on your computer for video processing, so neither model significantly reduces the load on your PC. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

    Is there a comparison between 16-80mm vs the 18-135mm? I am not pro just looking for an "all in one". Travel photo is what got me hooked but i do enjoy now urban, street indoors etc.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      I haven't got the 16-80mm or I probably would have done one. Everything I hear is that it's a good lens and I would imagine it is better than the 18-135mm, purely because it doesn't have to deal with such a large zoom range.

    I had a bad copy of the 70-300, it was noticeably soft from about 230-300mm. I ended up going Tamron 150-500 for wildlife, because you can never have enough reach, and it's sharper on the telephoto end than the 300mm was. The 70-300 felt like a no man's land lens for me. The 70mm is too tight for indoors, and I wanted more than 300mm. I ended up also getting the 55-200mm later because it's cheap, and more versatile with the 55mm. It's about as sharp as the 50-140 too, but much lighter and cheaper.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      That's no good for this lens, I would have sent that back. Mine is sharp right up to 300mm and the TC takes me to 420mm. That's been good enough for what I do, so far. But, this isn't my only lens (of course) and it's actually the 10-24mm that has been on my camera most this year.

  • @juxxcreative

    I purchased this lens and used it during a golf tournament yesterday. However, despite selecting the people or objects I wanted to focus on, the lens didn’t focus on the chosen area. Instead, it focused more on the areas behind the selected subject, blurring the object or person I wanted to capture. Am I possibly using it incorrectly? My camera is a FujiFilm X-T200, and I tried shooting in Aperture Priority and Shutter Speed Priority modes. I used Single Point Focus for the shots.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      I'm not too familiar with the X-T200, I'm afraid. I know some Fuji lenses can have issues and need to be calibrated. That's the same with all manufacturers to some degree. I would do some tests at home in a controlled environment. Make sure you're using Single Point Focus with the area set small enough to target your subject precisely. If you're shooting moving subjects, try Continuous AF instead of Single AF. Also, double-check your aperture settings - shooting wide open can make focusing more critical, so stopping down a bit might help. If autofocus still struggles, try manual focus with focus peaking enabled to see if the lens is consistently off. It’s worth testing to rule out any calibration issues. Hope that helps!

    Thanks so so much for this video, what you say here it is been a huge mis understanding for both new and professional photographers. I personally like grain so so so much so much so that I had a project in which by adding a 10 stops nd to the lens you will use high ISO to obtain a beautiful effect on BW photos edited with a preset I developed (this is just for you to notice how much I like grain and how much I believe anyone can do something beautiful with it). Now, talking about pristine images, yes, ISO plays a huge role in in it but as you said: a proper exposure is king and by proper I mean not this other mistake in which people looks for a “perfect” exposure, by proper I mean whatever you think is right for photo based on what you want to create. Best regards from a Venezuelan viewer in Panama! I hope you come back to continue with such a great channel!

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Thank you so much for your comment! It’s great to hear from someone who truly embraces grain as a creative tool - your project with the 10-stop ND filter and high ISO sounds fascinating, and it’s a perfect example of how grain can add character to an image. I completely agree with you about proper exposure not being about some textbook “perfect” level, but rather what fits the creative intent of the photo. It’s all about using the tools and techniques to bring your vision to life. Greetings from the UK, and I appreciate your support - it’s viewers like you who make sharing this content so rewarding!

    Bought a used one a few months ago (2024) as a pocketable camera to use instead of my full frame Sony. Throw it in my handbag as I head out, as a much nicer alternative to my iPhone since I shoot in raw and with a bit of editing, most shots come out pretty good. The sensor is nice as is the flip up screen, and works with all my Sony lenses. What not to love for the price?

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Completely agree with you! The A5100 is such a great little camera for the price, especially as a pocketable alternative to a full frame. Shooting in raw makes all the difference, and with some editing, the results can be amazing. Plus, being able to use your Sony lenses with it is such a bonus. Honestly, it’s hard to beat for a camera that’s so compact yet so capable at that price point.

  • @barrymayes6712
    @barrymayes6712 3 місяці тому

    EXCELLENT! I’ve been using Fuji for 10 years. X-m1, X-H1, X-T3 etc. I’ve had the X-T5 a few months and the image quality is AWFUL. I thought I had a duff body. The images lacked detail. The whole point if upgrading to X-T5 was so I could crop-like-crazy using my 70-300mm lens instead of buying the 150-600. The images were rubbish and when I cropped them they were “mushy”. So I reduced the NR and bingo! I’ve got great images. Thank you so much!

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I’m glad the tip worked for you. Fujifilm’s default noise reduction can sometimes be a bit heavy-handed, and it’s amazing how much more detail you can preserve by tweaking it. The X-T5 is such a capable camera, and pairing it with the 70-300mm for heavy cropping does let you take full advantage of that sensor. That's actually the setup I have now. So happy to hear it’s made a difference for your images - enjoy your photography! 😊

    Was the 350D a CCD sensor? I have a Nikon D200 that uses that sensor and it has great color. Anyway, I do use my Fuji with this 18-135 lens or the 16-55 and love both of those. Another great Fuji underrated lens is the 15-45 VC. The zoom on it is a bit quirky though.

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      The 350D used a CMOS sensor, I believe. The D30 or D60 used CCD, IIRC. I've not had the chance to try the 15-45mm at all. I might look out for it.

    Yes, i have this lens as well as a xc 16-55, xc 50-230 combo and cant decide which set to take for travel, its driving me insane because the xf 18-135 is a do all lens but is a little heavy at 490g but the 16-50,50-230 combo is good because its lighter with only the 16-50 on camera most of the time......

      I'm still using the 10-24mm most of the time. It's pretty good all round, but I tend to carry 3 lenses with me at all times now, the 10-24mm, 18-135mm and 70-300mm. It gives you a really good range with some really capable lenses, especially at those sweet spots for Landscape and Wildlife.

    Great video. I don',t agree with the statement about 'the lenses loosing clairty at the long end'. I have tried the 100-400mm and was disappointed by the sharpness at 400. The reason why i am still adapating my canon 100-400mm mk 2 L because its sharpness at 400mm is way way superior than the fuji version wide open. The only fuji long lens that i find great in comparison to my sharp canon lenses is the 50-140mm.

      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment! I appreciate your perspective, especially since you're directly comparing the Fuji lenses to the Canon 100-400mm Mk II L, which is a fantastic lens. In the video, I noted that lenses can lose a bit of clarity at the long end, and this seems to hold for the Fuji 100-400mm in my experience. However, as you’ve found, sharpness can be quite subjective, and results can vary based on technique, settings, and even individual lens copies. The 50-140mm is indeed a stellar lens, and it's great that you’ve found it compares well to your Canon kit. I think the Fuji 70-300mm offers excellent sharpness for its size and weight, which is why it’s my go-to now, but for dedicated wildlife shooters who need that 400mm reach with no compromise, the Canon or even Fuji’s new 150-600mm might be better suited. Thanks for sharing your experience - it’s always great to hear how others are getting on with their gear!

    Thanks for the video/advice. I am an Astrophotographer. I have had some recent interest in purchasing my prints from my local community. My thought is to sell prints of a particular image in series. Perhaps 1/100 or maybe 1/50, not sure. This of course would divide my cost and effort across several sells. Maybe I am naive but it doesn’t seem right to get each customer to pay as if they were the only buyer. I used to have a Smugmug account that gave me a discount on printing cost (Bay Photo Lab) plus complete control on my pricing and marketing. Another feature is the option to have the prints directly delivered to the customer. My thought is to come up with a price for my ‘art’ and use that as the mark-up. The customer could then get whatever size/type print they wanted. My prophet would come from the art mark-up plus typical retail value of the size/type print the customer ordered. It may be something like: 16 x 24 Metal print (my cost $50) standard retail $85 plus say $75 art cost = $110 profit X quantity of the image sold in its series. (Art mark-up would increase depending on success. You know ‘cause once your famous you can charge whatever you want and people will pay it. ) Any thoughts? I am just brain storming at this point.

    Hi,thanks for the interesting video! I own one Sony A5100 and I'm very happy with it. I was thinking of buying a Sony A6700 but I've read that the sensor performance of the A6700 shooting in raw, is quite similar to the Sony A5100. You gain with the A6700 between 1/3 and 2/3 of a stop in dynamic range,Iso performance and colour depth. In video the A6700 is clearly a better camera, but in photography as far as image quality is concerned the differences are minimal. I really like the photographs you took. ¿ Did you take them mounting the camera on a tripod or handheld?

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Thanks for the comment and for sharing your thoughts! I completely agree - the A5100 holds up really well, even against newer cameras like the A6700, especially for photography. The dynamic range and ISO improvements in the A6700 are nice, but as you said, the differences in raw image quality are fairly minimal. As for the photos in the video, they were all handheld. The A5100 is such a great little camera for grabbing shots on the go, and its compact size makes it perfect for situations where setting up a tripod isn’t practical. Glad you enjoyed the photos! 😊

    I would like to see 70-300 vs sigma 100-400 as they are similarly priced. Fuji's 100-400 is almost double the price.

      Thanks so much for the kind words, and I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the videos! The 70-300mm is a fantastic choice - lightweight, versatile, and super sharp. The Sigma 100-400mm is great too, but I think you’ll love the flexibility of the Fuji lens. I definitely have more videos planned, so stay tuned, and thanks again for the support!

    holy cow I'm glad I heard that disclaimer at the end about the 40mp sensors. Thank you! I've got an XH2 and I was considering the two cheaper options. Guess I'll save up for the 70-300. Glad I'm not in a rush :) Thank you!

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      You’re very welcome! I’m glad the disclaimer helped. The X-H2’s 40MP sensor really shines with lenses like the 70-300mm, so it’s definitely worth the wait. It’s a fantastic lens and a great match for that camera. Best of luck with your saving - I’m sure you’ll love it when you get it! Although, it's been a while. Have you got it yet?

    Interesting video Steve. I suppose your choice of lens depends on your “starting point”! My first DSLR camera was a 550D (which I still own). It came with a low budget short zoom (up to 55mm) but didn’t get any use at all as I soon purchased a Tamron 18 - 270 zoom….what a brilliant lens that is (still own that too!). I own a few low cost lenses, including the “nifty 50”😂. I then moved on to a Ricoh GRii for some “Street Photography”…a lovely little discreet camera. I later picked up a retro 40D for 50 quid. More recently I had been watching a few Fuji related videos and was drawn to an X-T1 in outstanding condition at a reasonable price…but then came the quest for some of their lenses!! To start with I went for a 55mm 7Artisan and a 23mm TTartisan. I then added a 12mm Samyang. The big “gap” for me was that I did not own a single weather sealed (or resistant!) lens of any brand! Not good for users shooting in our lovely British weather!! In the last couple of months I picked up a 35mm f2 WR and today, took delivery of a Fuji 16mm 1.4 WR (with square hood☺️). I’ve really got to stop now as my wife has no idea how much my hobby is costing, but only when I get my hands on a Fuji zoom. Since I’ve already got my primes, my choice will likely be an XF 16 - 80 f4 WR, as I anticipate using this for Street Photography in poor weather conditions when I can’t use the Tamron.….not quite as long in reach as the Fuji 135 but great reviews. Have you done a review on that lens Steve?

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Thanks for the detailed comment! It’s always so interesting to hear about the progression of someone’s photography gear. Starting with the 550D and moving through to the X-T1, it sounds like you’ve built quite the collection, and I love the mix of lenses you’ve picked up along the way. The Ricoh GRii for street photography is such a solid choice, and that 40D for £50 is an absolute steal! Your transition to Fuji is exciting, and it sounds like you’ve chosen some great lenses. The 35mm f2 WR is a personal favourite - lightweight, weather-resistant, and tack-sharp. And the 16mm f1.4 WR with the square hood? What a beauty! Perfect for street and low-light work, and that weather resistance is such a bonus in the UK’s unpredictable conditions. The XF 16-80mm f4 WR would complement your primes really well (although I've not had a chance to review it as yet), especially as a versatile, weather-resistant zoom for street and travel photography. I haven’t reviewed that lens yet, but it’s definitely on my radar. It gets great reviews for its flexibility and sharpness, so I can see why it’s on your list. And don’t worry - your secret about the hobby costs is safe with me! 😉 Hope you enjoy your new gear, and thanks again for watching and sharing your journey!

      @ Update….I still haven’t purchased a Fuji telephoto lens however, I couldn’t help myself and decided to purchase the Fuji XF90 f2 in the interim! My thought process is to try and stick to prime lenses with XT and periodically (when the weather is dry and the light is decent!) take my Canon 40D out with me paired with the Tamron zoom. At least that will sort of justify keeping my Canon!

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment! Actually, Pre-Shot mode does require the electronic shutter to function and works specifically in Continuous High (CH) burst mode. If you’re having trouble enabling it, it might be worth double-checking your settings to ensure you’re in CH and using the electronic shutter. Glad you found the video helpful otherwise!

    THIS IS REALLY HELPFUL. THANKS. I AM CONSIDERING CHANGING THE 55-200 FOR THE 70-300 ON MY XT5…VIEWS?

    • @SteveMellorPhotography
      @SteveMellorPhotography Місяць тому

      Glad you found it helpful, and thanks for commenting! Both lenses are great, but the 70-300mm might be the better choice if you’re looking for extra reach and weather sealing, especially on the X-T5. It’s sharp, lightweight, and pairs beautifully with the 40MP sensor. That said, the 55-200mm is slightly faster at the long end, so if you often shoot in lower light, it might still have the edge there. It really depends on your shooting needs, but I’d lean towards the 70-300 for versatility and durability.
