EXCELLENT! I’ve been using Fuji for 10 years. X-m1, X-H1, X-T3 etc. I’ve had the X-T5 a few months and the image quality is AWFUL. I thought I had a duff body. The images lacked detail. The whole point if upgrading to X-T5 was so I could crop-like-crazy using my 70-300mm lens instead of buying the 150-600. The images were rubbish and when I cropped them they were “mushy”. So I reduced the NR and bingo! I’ve got great images. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I’m glad the tip worked for you. Fujifilm’s default noise reduction can sometimes be a bit heavy-handed, and it’s amazing how much more detail you can preserve by tweaking it. The X-T5 is such a capable camera, and pairing it with the 70-300mm for heavy cropping does let you take full advantage of that sensor. That's actually the setup I have now. So happy to hear it’s made a difference for your images - enjoy your photography! 😊
If you want clinical sharpness stop using LR and use Capture One. LR is fine for all Beyer sensors, but turn X-Trans sensors into water colour detail. I almost dropped Fujifilm until I discovered Capture One. I generally sharpen in Capture One at 140-180% at 0.8 pixels noise "0".
Hi Steve, Thanks for the mention! Last weekend I downloaded the 30 day trial of DXO's Pure Raw 3 and Photo Lab 6. It was an eye opener and a game changer. If I were really invested in Lightroom's data management (library) I'd use Pure Raw 3 as my exclusive Fuji Raw converter, but as I very much dislike programs that force me to import files that are already in my file structure on my hard drive as LR and C1 do, I am very happy to use Photolab 6. As a matter of fact I've been going back and re-processing images from a few years ago and it is much faster and easier to get similar results with PL6 than C1. Andy Hutchinson has a great video from 4 days ago where he compares LR, C1, PL6 and Topaz and I agree with his findings. (He also has a very salty video about Capture One and I actually agree with his findings on that as well. It's not a great program, but it was one of the best Fuji XTrans developers until I found DXO.) Also, I am very happy with my XF 10-24mm WR on my XT5. I think sample variation has a lot to do with people reporting issues. My copy seems to be a good one. Cheers!
What's interesting to me at the moment is the idea of good and bad copies of lenses and whether a lot of problems people are having with the 40mp sensors is whether they have bad copies of lenses but didn't realise until the upgrade in sensor size. I've only just been recommended @Andyhutchinson's video today and I'm just watching it now. I will have to download the demo of DXO but I'm waiting until my car's MOT is done so I might actually have some money left to get it if I decide I like it better ;) Can I ask, with the pricing on Pure Raw, is it a yearly thing or a "you've bought it until we update to V4?"
@@SteveMellorPhotography I think Pure Raw 3 is $129 USD and it's a one time purchase. DXO has no subscriptions. Yes, there seems to be a lot more sample variation in the past few years regarding lenses. I tried to buy a Nikon Z7II kit a few months back and sent back 2 of them because the 24-70mm was badly de-centered in them. I needed up sending them all back eventually, as the IQ improvement wasn't with the hassles of shooting a Z7II, but that's another story... My 35mm F2 WR Fuji lens had issues which I discovered with the move to 40mp's. I swapped it out for a new copy and the new one is much better. The rest of my lenses are fine except for my 18-55 and DXO has even made that better. I've also learned I can use it for critical work if I crop it to a 4:5 or 1:1 aspect ratio as the problems are on the sides and the center is sharp.
I have been very happy with DxO and my Fuji X-T5 which is my first Fuji camera. I was questioning both my skills and my purchase decision when I looked at my images in Lightroom. Once I got DxO and started using it, everything fell into place. I also have the free version of Capture One and probably just need to spend more time with it as it also does a good job. I still export and import into LR because LR has some tools there I am used to such as masking. Maybe getting the DxO plugin package will save processing time. DxO also does a better job with Panasonic MFT images than LR, so I think I will be reprocessing my old vacation photos.
@@katesavage2001 It’s worth having a go with the new Denoise feature in LR, just to see how you get on with it. The X-T5 is a really nice camera once you’ve got to grips with the idiosyncrasies of the X-Trans system. I wish you all the best with it :)
If you sharpen Fuji files in LR you need to have masking set to 80+ to avoid the worming effect. So it only sharpens where the opposing contrast tones meet. Hold ALT key while dragging the mask slider to see where sharpening is effected. It will show a black and white inverted, negative looking image
it is very frustrating that lightroom still doesnt properly support xtrans, however the worming you mention from the sharpening mostly goes away if you use the inbuilt "enhance raw" feature in lightroom. also I find that the "details" slider is most responsible for the worming and I often turn it down all the way and turn the sharpening up to compensate.
"Enhance Raw" is part of the denoise processing as well now, and you can chose the level of removal you're after too. It would just be really nice if you didn't need to have a workaround.
Having invested in the GFX system, and the XT5, Ill tell you Fujifilm needs to really invest in new sensor tech. The images have ZERO punch. not sharp at all. My 10 year old A7r2 blows away my GFX 100s with the 100 F2. I get it that Fuji people love the film sims, but the sharpness and detail is awful. The sensors are 10+ years old.
I'm afraid it doesn't. Not only do I have 3 RAW images that show this (2 of which have been included in the video to demonstrate) but I can find nothing that backs up your claim at all whilst many people mention the IQ settings only affect JPGs. In fact, even @pal2tech mentioned this in his video on High ISO Noise Reduction: ua-cam.com/video/80Fw_pZXX30/v-deo.html
So, this hack has been around for some time. Is it something you have heard of before and have you had any good experiences using it?

Capture One for the win any day!
hi , i been use capture 1 for the last 2 years, because with Lightroom take me so much time to get a good quality photos. thanks
Yes, a lot of people are choosing that route and it looks like a pretty good one.

Thanks for doing the hard work for us.
Thank you. I am glad someone found it useful :)
Nice video!
Thank you very much, that’s very kind of you 😊
You should call this video, lightroom vs capture one

Agreed! My XT3 gives far superior images than my X-T5. I’ve now reduced NR on X-T5 to -2 and get better results.
Noise reduction does affect raws as well

The background music is far too loud…
We have added your video to YTRankBoost, just to let you know!
