And given players are always on the search for more distance when it comes to their drives, a speedy solution which is often considered by many is simply to change the loft of their driver. But given driver loft is 'dyna...

If you are pass 60, use a 12 degree driver. Period.
This was very reassuring to know I think I have the right setup . 10.5 driver, 16 degree 3 wood, 20 degree 4 hybrid, 6-P irons, 50 degree , 56 degree.
Great stuff. Delighted you've found a set up that works well for you. You're missing a few clubs out there though aren't you? Do you have more hybrids in there beyond the 4?
Interesting stuff
Delighted you enjoyed it 👍
Excellent video! I do not know my driver speed but my 7 iron is 84-86mph. Current irons start at 5 iron, 22 degrees of loft. Looking to see what loft hybrids I should get to add to the 5-UW irons.
Many thanks. Delighted you enjoyed the video 👍 And best of luck with the hybrid testing further up the bag!
The improvements in the ball and clubs since 1990s has been unbelievable. In that period of time I have gone from 30s to 60s and only lost a little distance. BUT I no longer try to hit say 4 irons and the longest iron I have is a 6 - switching to Hybrids and Woods (7, 9, 5, 3) was the best thing I ever did. The second was using a softer Urethane ball - the Pro balls are great to chip and putt, and also with the Driver, but with the PW 9 8 7 irons I lose 10-15 yards. Get the right ball and clubs as you age is the best advice I can give. My 7 iron goes 140.
Absolutely agree and no doubt the change in the ball in the last 1990s / early 2000s was huge for the game. Suspect like me you remember the balata days which just wouldn’t allow the top players to hit it like they do now. Think you’re spot on also with your bag changes and more should be following you 👍
@@GolfingFocus Yes indeed mate - I played a balata ball -a few times. It was great to chip and putt - but with the driver I only hit the fairway 2-3 times. I loved how east it was to hit over a high tree - but I hated how much spin with driver. A fade became a big slice - but a draw became a hook and was way worse.
@@AussieBob999 And a bad shot let you with a ball with a big smile on its face! 😂
With no contract, 95 out of 100 would use pro v
Interesting. You don’t think the Titleist sponsorship with them being the biggest means they’re played more than they otherwise would be?
How about looking at iron use based on top 20 GIR rankings? Just a suggestion.
Thanks for the feedback. Something we can consider for the future for sure 👍
I’ve switched from Pro V’s to Wilson Staff Model, and I’ll never go back. They’re longer off the tee, with better spin around the greens. Phenomenal, yet very overlooked golf ball, in my opinion.
Interesting. What’s the price differential? And how long ago did you switch?
@@GolfingFocus Identical price as Pro V. About a year now….
@@jamiesloan7259thanks for sharing. And what was it about the Pro V’s performance that you thought it needed a switch away from?
@@GolfingFocus A buddy of mine gave me a sleeve of the Staff Models to try, or I would have never switched, to be honest. As soon as I saw the distance difference, and watched one 2 hop, and stop, on a long chip, I was sold. My only complaint about the ball is the clicky sound.
Surprised Bridgestone doesn't get more love considering they've partnered with Tiger for so long. The Bridgestone Tour B X really is the best ball all-around IMO
It’s been a surprise for sure given Tiger’s success more pros haven’t tried using this ball. Maybe the money from Titleist is just too good?
The MaxFli Tour and Tour X balls are just as good as any of these for 2/3 the price.
It will be interesting for sure to see if there’s a lot of take up of this ball compared to the standard premium offerings out there.
4:52 That looks like a wild slice swing.
Tiger did not use a Bridgestone ball in all his 15 major wins!!
Yup, it's a confusing one especially when you think of that Masters chip at the 16th in 2005. But Tiger's Nike balls were made by Bridgestone. Here's a clip we found of the man himself talking about it - twitter.com/MyGolfSpy/status/1087688553486864386
seems like half pros like 10.5 and the other half are 8.5 - 9.5
They play whoever is paying them.
Yup lots of people saying the same thing Stephen. Do you think there’s anything to be learned from the pros set ups though even in spite of the endorsement deals?
@GolfingFocus sure that every club manufacturer can make anything with precise detail. The brand doesn't matter, it is the match of the golfer swing to the correct specification aka fitting.
I am 22 with a heavy sports background. I started around Febuary of this year. I hit my 7 like 165 i hope that once i get more consistent i can make it do that more regularly.
I'm still looking for the best drunk driving utility iron
Now this is what we need - actual data
Carry ping g30 19 and 22 degrees, fairway wood 4 in 17 degrees good spread for longer approach shots.
Grew up learning the game with 1,3,5,7,9 wood. Have hybrids down to 7 . 8 - gw irons. Too easy to hit to pass up
Great stuff Robert. 👍
I was clearing 180 with a 7iron.... The first hole at the club I grew up on was 190 yards.
That’s an incredible yardage Graeme. You’re further than the PGA Tour average for 7-iron!
Do they make them with no offset I usually hook the ball especially out of the rough
One thing to look out for sure when it comes to the wide body versions of hybrids is that they are typically biased towards producing a draw. Wouldn’t stop this making them a consideration though and a good fitted can help without question find one that can work for you 👍
high lofted woods 9 or 11 anyone?
I use both Occasionally swap out the 11 for a 6 hybrid.👍
Always enjoy these insights - usual comparisons to what an ordinary golfer does. Personally still prefer a long iron to a hybrid.
Many thanks Charles and delighted you enjoyed the video 👍
I started using 4 and 5 hybrids 10 years ago. My irons start at 7 on down. 58 years old playing to 2 hcp these days. Oh I’ve added a 7 wood last year. These clubs are so easy to hit.
Great stuff Tim. Think you've been well ahead of the curve on this one and many more regular players should follow suit and try these clubs out. Hope the 7-wood helps again this year 👍
Wild seeing some of the pros, both male and female, rocking bags that start irons at a 6 or 7.
Definitely. And not sure enough regular golfers realise that and take similar advantage of the help that’s on offer from different clubs. LPGA review to come soon too 👍
@@GolfingFocusNice!
Don't take range ball distances to heart, way off
Thanks for your efforts
Many thanks Ron. Delighted you enjoyed it 👍
He's thorough..😂
Very interesting seeing the backup drivers. Seemed like the sweet spot on my Paradym Triple Diamond shrank during the cold months so I went back to a TSr3. I enjoyed it, traded them both for a Ping 10K. Sweet spot doesn't get any bigger.
Good stuff as always, Keep it up! Thank you
Many thanks for the feedback and delighted you enjoyed it! 👍
Really helpful analysis, thanks for sharing and your comments
Delighted you found the video helpful 👍
I found a olimar9- hybrid....its 42 degrees
Really Depends on path of Swing. and Spin Rate. My Old Driver I had spin Rate of 4000 RPM which ment Driver acted like a 9 Iron with how quickly it stop. Moved to Paradym Triple Diamond with low spin Shaft and now get twice the roll out.. with same loft as previous driver.
65y 10hc 7i= 149m carry. 5i= 172m carry. what ever I'm doing wrong, I'm happy.
Those are great yardages. Awesome stuff 👍
They should have an ipad or phone
Id like to know more about shat flex
Video coming soon on this and other club info about the clubs to top LPGA pros use 👍
4:20 is the hardest to buy. NO senior golfers use a combination of blades and cavity backed?
Out of the data we could find none of the senior pros had a mixed set of blades and cavity backs. There may be some we don’t know about though of course but think it’s fair to say from the 50 odd pros we found iron info on that it’s very much a niche choice if any of them do play such a mixed set.
They just need to add in the percentage they get paid to play a certain type of shaft specially in their driver and Threewood. And their irons, I know that’s more of a field thing. But the driver in the Threewood is more for selling to the public.
Great info thanks
Delighted you found it helpful 👍
Club marking should evolve. Screw numbering sets from 3-9. Every club should now be marked with its loft. How far do you hit a 36°?
Yup agreed this would be useful for sure. A couple of the manufacturers have tried this in the past and it affected sales apparently so they’ve reverted to numbers. Will be interesting to see if it comes back at some point though!
Good stuffs and thanks! Just wondering if you can do a video focussing on the Graphite shaft for Irons for Champion Tours. Want to know the percentages for Graphite shaft on Iron only as I am switching to graphite as it is easier on the body.
Many thanks and delighted you enjoyed the video. We’re working on a graphite shafts analysis across the main tours - PGA, LIV, Champions Tour and LPGA and aim to put this up soon 👍
Harry Higgs uses DG 105s x-flex in his irons. Kind of interesting for a young pro to use such a relatively lightweight shaft.
We’ve done a similar review of PGA Tour shafts in another video too - ua-cam.com/video/u4dCC4rSunk/v-deo.htmlsi=0px4Jqvj0XaJqTbQ. Update for 2024 in the works also 👍
Wonderful video.
Many thanks! Delighted you enjoyed it 👍
Excellent information and great presentation
Many thanks for the feedback. Is very much appreciated! 👍
Great as usual
Delighted you enjoyed it 👍
First
It’s all about money and who sponsors who
Exactly
How many of these players are still sponsored? Most Irons don’t differ that much and if you get them for free plus a nice paycheck, as a player you pick the highest bidder.
Definitely sponsorship plays a part for sure but not for all of them. Langer has 7 different brands in his bag for example and he’s not sponsored by them all. It is a factor though for sure
Honestly, the greatest piece of advice I ever got was a few weeks ago when older gentleman stopped me at the range and said, “if you try to swing with less power, the drive will feel smoother , and the drive will eventually go farther and more importantly, more accurately.” Boy did that click.
Awesome and delighted it’s working for you. No question different pieces of advice work for different people and delighted you’ve found this mantra that works. 👍
The attachment of club head to shaft at heel make the mass in the club head twist the shaft and toe of the club open and closed during the swing the more mass there is in the toe of the club the more this occurs. In the hands of an experienced golfer the sensation of the club heat TRYING to twist in the hands provides valuable feedback and situational awareness of face angle during the swing allowing them to adjust it with their superior hand-brain-coordination if it isn’t correct for the shot being planned; straight or straight. The pros seldom try to hit and shot dead straight because tilting the backspin axis like this \ for a fade ( or like this / for a draw ) ‘takes one side of the hole out of play’. Karsten Solheim if PING is credited with creating the ‘high-MOI’ design in the 1950 after taking up golf in his 30’s and realizing the toe bias of the putters and blade irons were twisting in his hands for the reason explained above. Being an engineer is realized that could be fixed by moving mass from toe to sole and heel of the club in his Anser putter and PING EYE designs. The heel-sole-toe balance is designed to help the face of the club stay automatically square, not to the straight target line but rather the curved swing path the club head travels on. Due to the physics of mass and movement cavity back clubs will not twist in the hands during the swing as much as a 1960s MB blade will and will deflect less at impact if ball strikes isn’t perfect. Some marketing wonk decided to call that “Game Improvement” when it us actually “Mistake Mitigation”. To the extent they are more “Forgiving” it is because they mask the underlying fact the golfer’s swing has room for improvement. This has resulted in three, four generations of golfer believing that buying the next NEW and MORE FORGIVING set of clubs will improve their SKILL. They will improve SCORE to some degree but mask the feedback that is needed to improve toe and face control like the pros do. I’m old enough to have started in 1983 with a set of blade irons and purchased and regripped several sets of MB blades from the 1970s to understand the differences. I found a set of PING EYE2 irons 3i - LW at a thrift store for $60 and played those for about ten years before going back to less ‘forgiving’ but better ‘feedback’ in a $400 set of circa 2009 PING S57s and at age 72 recently switched to circa 2000 Mizuno T-Zoids I picked up for $120 because like the pros I never try to hit a full swing shot dead straight and and like the feedback of the lower MOI head designs when shaping shots 😊.
