Bushcraft, knives, fishing, outdoor life, Finnish nature&history. Countryside living etc.
Name of the channel comes from the fact that I live near one of the biggest inhabitat forest areas in southernmost Finland. It practically starts right at my garden. With wolfs, lynxes, bears, eagles etc. (Just four days ago was a wolf in our garden.

👍 I love Marttiini knives.
Ive had a similar food. It was referred to as toad in the hole. I have no idea why
Slicey! Nice work! What a versitile blade! Thanks for the demo, now I'm hungry!😂
It actually is! Wanted a bit to demonstrate you can do more than just woodwork with these. I've pretty much done all you can think of with puukkos: fishing, hunting, foodprep, bushcrafting, carving. Everything under the sun. They were originally meant to be versitale allrounders. (Forget to add clip of slicing also the porcinis). Have to say was a delicious Pizza! Thanx for watching, have an awesome weekend my friend!🌲🔪🌲
There it is - all a guy needs in a woods knife! Everything else is just bells and whistles. 👍🏻
True! One should not forget that these knives are originally indeed meant to be versitale allrounders. Thanx for stopping by, have great weekend!
Ive always found it strange people say puukkos arnt good food prep knives. Finns dont eat?
Excactly! They were originally used precisely for everything you can imagine. I've used my puukkos for fishing, hunting, food prep, carving, carpenting, bushcraft things. You name it. Thanx for stopping by!🌲🔪🌲
The "do it all" knife!
Oh yeah! Maybe many wont realize but good puukkos are actually very versitale knives. Thanx for stopping by my friend!🌲🔪🌲
That knife can make some beautiful curls.
Definitely! Found that Marttiinis grinds are often straight out of the gate very very good with feathers. Thanx for stopping by!🌲🔪🌲
@@OldForestBushcraftfrom what I have seen I believe you could make decent feather sticks with a spoon 🤣

Such rich heritage, the swans are so majestic and beautiful birds! Thanks for posting. 👍
Swans were never hunted for this reason in Finland. Killing one would have brought bad fortune. Thanx watching!
Thanks for posting this, the birds are so beautiful and majestic! Should be appreciated by all. 👍
Indeed! I love birds! Many water birds (not only Swans) have almost holy position In Finnish Mythology.
The steady, daily, use saturates the wooden handle with sebaceous oil and preserves the wood from drying out and cracking.
That is very true. Saturated wood is amazingly durable. Thanx for watching!
One of the reasons why Swans are the Holy Birds in Finland. Also The National Bird.
Your military experience was very rewarding for you, thanks for sharing. 👍
I was indeed. I know it wasnt that for everybody, but I got a lot from it. Thanx for stopping by!🌲🔪🌲
I made my jaakaripuukko with a scandi grind and a convex edge and it really really bites in wood also carves very good and feathersticks are also very easy.
Also did the Convex edge. This knife is MUCH better with it! Thanx for stopping by!
@@OldForestBushcraft no problem, i like the content!
@@f804.de.ruyter thanx a lot!👍
Grateful also of past generations fighting for Finnish independence. Remembering often my grandfather Martti who fought f.e. In the battle of Kollaa, with the White Death Simo Häyhä. He lost all his friends from his home village of Kiuruvesi. Was tormented of that for the rest of his life.
The lion is a beautiful coat of arms But it would be better if the background was white and the roses were red. White roses aren't to popular where I am from 😂. Reminds us of Yorkshire. I am sure the military still train in survival skills. I think the army is a good place to be for most youngsters,at least in peace time.
Oh yeah the famous English Roses. 'Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York'😅 At least for me and for many of my friends it was a good experience, transformative, though not easy, many said they came out from it a bit as different person. A Finnish rite of Passage😂. Thx for stopping by Tim!
Nice fish and beautiful lake. I used to fish any time I could, but I kind of lost interest a few years ago. I will probably get back into it at some point.
@@8626John has been a bit same with me. Specially after the birth of my daughter, home renovations, allround busy times. Last few years fewer fishing but now starting to do a bit more. Comes and goes apperently with me. Thanx for stopping by John!
@@OldForestBushcraftI've actually bought a fishing license the past couple of years, although I only got out once, so apparently I haven't totally lost the urge.

It’s a sickness! Ha! Being a knife addict, every knife I hold is my new FAV! That is one beautiful Cub! Love how they put the mosaic pin in the center and left the outer ones blank. Nice touch! Congratulations on your new favorite! 😁😂🤣
O yeah, its a sickness allright😅 I also think the mosaic pins add a cool touch. Totally in love with this one. Cant wait to take it out to the woods. Thx for watching my friend!
That's one beautiful blade. I could see that knife as a one and done purchase.
Quite taken it back by this one. Hard to explain but It feel like it has imo the best qualities many good BRK put into one knife. Cant wait to put it also to real test. Thanx for watching, have an awesome day!
Amazing looking knife! Wow! Very nice!
I love how it looks, a winner design imo. Sure just a first impression still, but have high hopes it's also a performer. Thanx for watching Kanuk!🇨🇦🇫🇮
That looks stunning.
A first impression only, but reaaally digging this. Very curios to put this to test! Thx for stopping by Tim!
I love mine! I too have many of Bark Rivers, but the Cub is one of my favorites! Top 3 anyway. Such a great design!
@@Mr_Obvious was in love with this straight away. And my first thought was, ok yep this going to be my favorite. Of course you never know until long period of use. But maaan this one they nailed, a killer design. Thanx for stopping by!
Love Marttiini 👍
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman They do one of the best, Bang for the buck puukkos imo. Thanx for stopping by my friend!

Beautiful Lake! Wow, what a nice catch! Nice boat too! Thx for sharing!
Soooo quiet place. Its kind of my 'secret lake'. Almost nobody visits this.. has some very nice trouts also! Thx for stopping by!👍
Do you still have and use this knife? I ordered mine, watching videos to pass time while i wait. Did you ever post the food prep video? I looked but just might be missing it
I actually think I never did the video. Or maybe I did some in the update review video. Yeah I use stll alot. One of those knive I'll never sell. Thx for watching, have a great day!
Is the Grind different to the Kierinki? Or the same?
The angle is smaller, the blade stock thinner, grind a bit higher…
I dare say you give grudgingly kudos to the the Barkey. Bravo 1. There is always room for improvement. As I went down the rabbit hole of collecting knives, one of my first knives was an Esse 5 with upgraded scales. A beast, heavy, indestructible, but not for every task. So when I purchased my first Bark River Bravo it was the Bravo 1.25 in 3V. It is my everything knife. It takes a beating and afterwards a strop to bring it back to shaving sharp. I have been fortunate with all my Bark River purchases. Everyone was flawless from a fit & manufacturing standpoint. I do agree The well made leather sheath for the Bravo is not for me. What ever issue one has with the knife one purchases from Bark River, they will fix any flaw. Replace it if you break it. Iv yet to hand over my knife to someone who didn’t like the ergoes. So in my opinion you can’t go wrong either a Bark River knife. Quality tools for the intended purpose or design. 😁
Well probably so. I like their knives, and used them over 10 yrs, and owned many. I think Mike Stewart is genius designer and pioneer in. So credit where credit is due. I do have issue with their QC. I live in Finland, and dont want take change if the knife might not be okay, and would have to do the hassle of sending to states etc. With high prices one have expect certain things. Nevertheless I just bought today (second hand) the Cub in 3v. Which seems like a super design. Hope the Finish is ok. So I do like their knives. (Though I prefere LT Wright. Perfect Fit&finish, and imo better ergos) But lets see the Cub. Looks like a fantastic knife. Thanx for watching, have a great day!🌲🔪🌲
Great looking knife!
Really surprised by this. A wood eating monster really. Great QPR. Thx for stopping by!
You've got some lovely patterning in your handle. In the UK this model is sold as the Arctic Carving Knife. I translated Kiehinen and realised it probably scares our retailers. How f***ing sad. Great knife.😊
The handle is great! A shame with the transalation. So generic, lol. Really liking this knife, and a great qpr. Thanx for watching!🌲🔪🌲
I might have to get myself one of those.
Really digging this one. And for the money a winner imo. Sheath could be tad less bulky though, but works nevertheless good. Thanx for stopping by Tim!
I liked that one. I saw it when I was there this June. You just can't go wrong with a good Marttiini knife!
Indeed, Marttiini still got it! I have to say Im really impressed with this. Unbelievable wood-eater! Thanx for watching!🌲🔪🌲
Love the HANDLE! Beautiful Puukko and what a performer! Thx for the review! Sweet! 👍
Yeah, has great handle! This is close to the traditional 'maasepänpuukko' (village peasants puukko) style. Simple but comfortable. What an amazing wood eater this is! Really surprised. Thanx for stopping by!🌲🔪🌲
Thanks for the review! I was looking for a more traditional style neck knife and this one spiked my interest. I was considering a Mora 1/0 that I caught on sale for around $25.00 US but, considering I would have to buy or make a sheath for the knife, it was a no go for me. Seeing knife prices creeping up the last couple of years, I broke down and bought one of the new Mora classic #2s last year as a replacement for my field worn, but still very usable old #2. It came quite dull with a partial hollow grind from the belly to the tip of the blade. I'm not impressed with Morakniv's "improved" classic line. The plastic sheaths are a little nicer looking and slightly more functional than the old plastic sheaths but they still suck compared to even a cheap plastic lined leather sheath like Marttiini ships with most of their knives. I bought an Ahti Vaara to compare to some other Nordic style knives in my arsenal and I was very impressed with the quality of their work. It's truly a functional work of art. I just ordered the Tikka based on your excellent review. I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival next week. I like a knife with a 3.5-4-inch blade for a standalone neck knife but a knife with a full-size handle and a 2.5 inch blade is just about ideal for a companion neck knife. I really enjoy your channel BTW. Puukkos have become one of my favorite style of knives the last several years but they're still somewhat of a mystery to me in terms of what is an authentic traditional puukko vs a more modern take on the traditional designs. It's interesting to hear about them from someone who grew up using them.
Thanx for the nice comment! Yeah, I have to agree with the Mora classic. I like the knives, and own countless of them during the years, but The sheaths a pretty much rubbish, and for the price unacceptable. I remember the days here in Finland in the 90s when you could pick a Mora classic from a gasoline station for a price of a beer. Boy have the prices gone up. Ahti makes great puukkos, with great prices. Would dare to say you wont be dissapointed with the Tikka😃. And still made as a small family business in the true heartland of Finnish pukkos, Southern Ostrobothnia. Thanx for watching, have a great weekend!
Do you have a vid making that minced meat bread? That sounds awesome a self contained sandwich
I bought this from our village shop, I think I never did them myself. Actually should! Im addicted to those😅
@@OldForestBushcraft do you know about pepperoni rolls? It looks like that but with sliced meat and cheese. Sometimes people put peppers inside too. They were invented in West Virginia for miners to take to lunch. Easy and convenient in the woods too
@@piningbuck no, but that sounds fantastic! Sometimes we put also things like pickles, ham, eggs, cheese, tomatoes also inside. Its called Lihapiirakka, Liha = meat Piirakka = pie. So a Finnish minced meat pie.
Brisa make the best Kephart on the market in my humble opinion! 👍
Indeed! I just love it, I use it a whole lot specially this time of year.
A good traditional pattern for so many tasks.
Definitely! Thanx for stopping by!👍
I'm gonna get another one , I really like this knife and want to do another build . The edges are very thin and easy to reprofile , it's a great project blade. That looks cool with the slim guard .
Its a great blade. Use it at the moment a lot. You dod amazing job with your curly birch! Thanx for stopping by!
A "puuk-hart"! Love it! 👍🏻😊

It sure is! Thanx for watching have great day!
❤❤❤
Joker knives of Spain do a Nessmuk with a Scandi grind, its really nice stainless version.
You prefer with thumb ramp, or rampless?
I have to say, at the end I prefere the Rampless, but also the ramp doesnt realy bother me either. Great knife anyways!
Bravo1 LT in MagnaCut my favorite. 👍🇨🇿
Sounds awesome!👍
Thanks for this fascinating history of Marttiini knives. I bought my first "Lynx" model in 1966, when I was a scout. I had it until not so long ago, when my Dad, who was getting confused towards the end of his life, decided to donate all my kit to the "Cat's Protection" charity shop. Luckily, I have several other, more up to date models which he did not give away.
Thank you for sharing story! 1966 already! Wow, respect! Thanx for watching have great day!🌲🔪🌲
@@OldForestBushcraft I like to think that whoever bought my knife from the charity shop is still enjoying it somewhere.
Do you have any malanika puukkos?
Unfortunately not. They look very nice! Many subscribers have mentioned them! Should maybe get one😃
@@OldForestBushcraft they are expensive…totally worth it…at least that is what people say…I only have one really expensive knife..the Adventure Sworn classic..the other handcrafted ones are from Dulo..his puukkos are beautiful also..have a great day good sir!!
