Ooznest Workbee 1500mm x 1500mm CNC Router Build Part 2
In this video I take you through the building of my new Ooznest CNC router which has a 1500mm x 1500mm bed.
This is part 2 of the video where I assemble the frame the supports the waste board and the electronics. You also see me test the machine by homing it.
The machine is based on the openbuild type machines.
Unfortunately the audio went bad towards the end. I have new batteries in my mic now so I shouldn't have the same problem again.
I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, please like, comment and subscribe!

Small Spline Cutting on the Manual Shaper

In this video I attempt to cut some very small splines. I liked the idea of the rear axles of the mini caterham having a spline shaft to drive the rear hubs as per the real car. The outcome wasn't perfect but did prove to myself that it may just be possible. Hopefully with some improvements I will be able to successfully cut some internal splines within the rear hubs. I didn't understand why use all this to move the axis. Do you want to convert in the future as a CNC machine? wasn't it enough for you to put a dc motor and a speed controller?

    You've designed this without a clapper box. Every shaper I've seen before had a clapper box, used to allow the tool to lift on the return stroke. Does this work OK without one? I'm guessing it does, nice design!

    Too much Flex. You did not follow the original plans which show many of the plates are also drilled,reamed and pinned to eliminate slip/flex. The cross slide also should be shimmed as well as any surface with play. The original plans specified faces to be files and scraped to an accurate fit that is missing here. You might recover this with some shims but yea you need a LOT of stiffening. A few welds might help in some areas but bear in mind future maintenance and disassembly. So only weld where it can be easily ground out and where it wont warp the material !

    I just finished building this unit, almost exactly to your spec. I used a NEMA 23, with and all in one driver/speed control. I had to add a small tension wheel as I didn’t get the center to center dimension exactly right. The tensioner works great!

    Cleaver use of bar stock to make a shaper. Your cutting tool could use more rake when cutting Aluminum. The chip should curl up, not look like it was pushed by a bulldozer. The tool you are using is ground for brass or cast iron. Search for `metal shaper bit geometry`. Getting the rake, clearance, and other tool-work geometries correct can make the difference between success and failure using an Armstrong shaper.

    14:00 I'm new to machining and trying to learn what I can from Reddit and YT. I had a hard time hearing what you said here.. You said you didnt have a what? So you were going to use a 10mm end mill. What was the proper tool you shouldve used here that you said you didnt have? Is this a special tool for doing a counter-sunk hole for that thumb screw?

    Why do you use stepper motor ,any technical reason please

    • @joansparky4439
      @joansparky4439 Рік тому

      low rpm high torque.. if you do the same with a DC motor you need gears, most likely worm geared which means you need a clutch to be able to disengage the drive from the table feed screw to be able to use it manually.. this stepper can be left 'engaged' the whole time.

    It is now 26/01/2022, and I've just come across your 'Smart & Brown lathe restoration, very good it is too! I found the gearbox rebuild interesting, but could not help noticing that there were NO comments on it, if only for the 'muzak' that no one liked in the first two videos.....me neither to be honest! I much prefer your voice explaining what you are doing, and the sound of tools tinkering away at the job in hand! Well, that's me off now to watch the last part-(4)-of this set, so please, keep up all the good work you do, and bin the 'muzak' please, you make much better video's without it!! A few years ago I bought a Sieg SX2P as my first milling machine. I soon got fed up rotating the X-axis wheel, so decided to motorise it. A stepper motor seemed the cheapest option, so I fitted one directly on the lead screw. It took an aluminium plate, two stand-offs, and s connector. I had an old PC and decided to use that for control using LinuxCNC, with a generic Chinese TB600 microstep driver. Rather than motor drive I know had CNC X-axis, so I used that, and manual Y, to machine the bits to convert the Y axis to CNC. That made the next step - the Zed axis (written that way to assist our American colleagues in correct pronunciation). So, now I had a 3-axis CNC mill. Next I bought a Chinese 4th axis, and was soon cutting gears. That project got rather out of control - all I'd wanted was motor drive. Now I'm looking for a Bridgenorth . . .
