    As you explained, for so many towing a caravan or driving a large motorhome is not convenient beside the parking, weight and length limitations make it even more problematic. You compromise on space but as you explained so well these campers remove all those other problems. Driving down to shops is non issue as you generally don’t unpack much that needs to be put away and you will typically have your usual car at home when this needs to be serviced. Even use as a second car when you first one needs work. Great solution as you pointed out. Great video and detail.

      I am still confused about the weights and I want to get it right before I buy. I have a 2020 Toyota HILUX can you please help me know exactly what ATM GVM GCM etc I am limited to. I have just bought the car and will need to place a redarc electric braking system in to get the towing capacity to 3500, or so I’m told…..but I’m still confused about what that actually allows me to tow legally….arghhhh what a mine field 😂

    • @caravansbythecampfire
      @caravansbythecampfire 25 днів тому

      @ hi, the different models of hilux vary with their towing capacity. It should be on a plate on the centre body frame when you open door the drivers side door. This the maximum weight the car can be with fuel, passengers and any other load including the ball weight of the caravan. Your rego papers will show you the vehicles Tare Weight - subtract one from the other to get that number. Next, you need to know the maximum combined mass (car plus tow rig) for that model - this is a determing factor for what you can tow provided you don’t exceed the GVM (gross vehicle mass) of the car when you attach the tow rig. You might be able to 3.5T however the GCM may max out at 6T. The numbers don’t work often with the mid range cars. I recommend you find the GVM, TARE WEIGHT, GCM of the vehicle first - another thing to know is your rear axle load rating - often gets exceeded with a fully loaded car plus the weight on the tow ball (tow ball weight often gets impacted by 1.5 x the tow ball weight - this is when people get a GVM upgrade with new suspension components certified by an engineer. I suggest you talk to either a mobile caravan/car weight service provider who will have all the answers for you and make it clear. Suspension specialist will also help or an experienced mechanic or towing specialist. It’s not complicated, just sounds like it! The electronic controller you mentioned allows the towed vehicle’s brakes to be applied when you apply the vehicle brakes - this gives you braked towing capacity - unbraked without the controller you can just tow a box trailer or small boat. This information will be in the cars user manual. Good luck - great idea to know all this stuff first as you suggest.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. You''re the first person I've heard report a Cub problem in this way, obviously they would have issues from time to time like every other caravan/camper on the market, all I've ever heard are good reports - People are asking to see light weight Australian made options (in particular the Cub Vans). We managed to get a tour and look inside their facility which is not normal for caravan manufactures to allow. Titanium let us in (vid on channel) and we have another coming up next month. Cub were honest and open with what they allowed to be seen (everything) - I felt they had nothing to hide and were genuine - just like Titanium a few months ago. Hopefully your camper hangs in their and redeems itself! Thanks again for your comment.
