Smudger's Nature
Приєднався 31 гру 2020
I'm an amateur naturalist living in Hampshire, England. As much as my work allows, I'm out walking in nature and trying my best to capture it's beauty. Anything that pleases my eye from birds to butterflies, mammals to reptiles and anything in between.
We're fortunate to live in a fantastic part of the world with chalk downs to the north, New Forest to the west and the Solent right on our doorstep.
I hope you enjoy my videos and would be grateful if you could like and share with friends and subscribe to my channel, it's absolutely free.
I also have pages on Facebook and Instagram plus I occasionally write a blog on Blogger. Links attached.
Many thanks

Wildlife Garden Diaries, June 2024
After all the fox cub shenanigans from my previous garden diary entry you'd think I would have exhausted all the footage from our garden, but it's been a busy month.
New arrivals in the badger department have been a blessing after losing our female, Flora to a road traffic accident.
In fact we have had three new females appear. Nature abhors a vacuum as they say.
This chapter also features the last time we saw our friendly fox Frank. He's been missing for nearly two months now. I don't discount the possibility of him going walkabout however but I fear the worst, this was his patch. Time will tell.

Swallow watch Part Two
Переглядів 112 годин тому
The Swallow chicks continue to grow and shed their downy feathers. The runt of the litter is seen but doesn't beg for food when the adults arrive. Coupled with two days of poor weather, it's looking bleak for the poor thing. The other four are thriving however. Tune in to my third and final episode soon to see how many manage to fledge. #swallow #swallownest #swallowchicks
Swallow watch, Part One
Переглядів 42 години тому
Our recent holiday to Northumberland was a wonderful experience. To cap it all, in the car port of our accommodation there was a Swallows nest, with what I thought had four chicks over a week old, but a fifth was hidden and clearly the runt of the litter. We feared it wouldn't survive. We watched them grow over the following week of our stay, with their parents ever attentive despite a couple o...
Dunsford Dippers
Переглядів 1914 днів тому
Dunsford in Devon is a favourite haunt of mine. I often visit in May or June in search of all sorts of species. One in particular is the Dipper. A unique freshwater bird that dives for aquatic invertebrates. I had some amazing footage of an adult using an invertebrate as some sort of water repellency, rubbing it all over it's feathers before eating it. Never witnessed that before. #dipper #dart...
Fox Cub Chaos

Now our vixen's cubs are becoming more independent, they get up to all sorts of shenanigans. Three of the original four that were born on the 1st March have made it thus far. Only 30% of cubs make it to their first birthday. #foxcubs #fox #naturefilm #urbanfox
On the trail of Glanvilles
Переглядів 6Місяць тому
Most years I travel across to the Isle Of Wight to search for the rare Glanville Fritillary butterfly. It's a great day out by ferry, hovercraft and bus to the southern edge of the island at Ventnor. Then a walk over Bonchurch Down with spectacular views across the downs and English Channel. The place hums with life in spring. Such a special part of the world. #isleofwight #glanvillefritillary ...

Adder Battle
Переглядів 2842 місяці тому
It's not often you get to see two males battle it out for the right to mate with a female. This was only the second time I've witnessed this , the first time was very brief. This occasion last hours. We'd been told about the two males fighting, so rushed down to capture them before it ended. We need not have rushed around and worried. They'd been at it for a couple of hours, then proceeded to d...
Wildlife Garden Diaries April 24

My monthly catchup with the goings on in our garden. After Smoky moved her cubs, I was waiting for them to be big enough to venture further from their new den. Finally they did at the end of April but only briefly. Frank, our lovely dog fox who had a injured leg which looked very serious, has made a great recovery, he now walks on the leg which looked like it was fractured but has fused itself ...
Willow Warbler Vs Chiffchaff
Переглядів 632 місяці тому
The difference between the Willow Warbler and the Chiffchaff is always a quandary for many of us. Visually they are almost identical but the difference is in the detail. Chiffchaff sport darker legs, shorter wings and are usually stumpier and less yellow than the Willow. Their song is completely different. Chiffchaff sound like the bird. Willow Warbler have a descending series of notes. You'll ...
Green Hairstreak, Beacon Hill, Hampshire
Переглядів 72 місяці тому
As spring kicks into gear, so more and more butterfly species begin to emerge depending on their flight periods. One of the first, more specialised species are just beginning to emerge as an adult and one of the early flyers is the Green Hairstreak. It's the UK's only green butterfly and very small. Easily overlooked as they power around the ground or bushes. They can be seen in all manner of h...
Redstart in the New Forest, Hampshire
Переглядів 312 місяці тому
With spring beginning, so the first of the migrant birds are arriving in the UK. It's always a great time to go in search of them and one in particular is a specialist of the New Forest near us. The Common Redstart. One of the most striking of our summer visitors, the male has a beautiful silver grey cap contrasting strikingly with it's black face and russet orange breast and tail. As you will ...
Puffins at Dancing Ledge
Переглядів 583 місяці тому
The tiny colony of Puffins in Dorset is the nearest to us in Hampshire and the most southerly population in the UK. Apparently they don't breed there but return every season. How long they will do this is open to question. The walk from Durlston Country Park near Weymouth to Dancing Ledge some 3 miles west is quite spectacular. Full of flora and fauna and wonderful views of the Jurassic coast h...
Red Kite at Old Winchester Hill
Переглядів 483 місяці тому
Old Winchester Hill is a old Iron Age hill fort in the heart of the Meon Valley and the South Downs in Hampshire. It's commanding views across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, coupled with it's rich fauna and flora make it a regular haunt for me. A truly inspiring place to spend a few hours. Being the end of March, my friend Chris and I visited in search of early migratory birds that use this p...

Very nice footage, great quality ! Were you far from it and at which focal length were you? :)
Thanks very much. I was at 560mm with my converter attached to my 400mm
@@smudgersnature7289 Thanks :) I would love to capture similar footage on my 400mm, never had the chance to get that close !
First time I had got close enough to a red kite. Just got lucky for once. Took a few years so fingers crossed you get a chance in the future. I often carry my small Panasonic camcorder which has longer reach and is very good but the quality isn't quite as good as my nikon mirrorless. My footage was handheld too, so a little jittery but I was so excited to see one so close!
I was about 80 feet away by the way
Wow, wonderful video 👍👍👍
Thanks very much 😊🙏
Thanks for sharing! -Ben

Gotta love the wee firecrest, well done you..
Fantastic little things. Thank you 👍
Excellent! The best photos I have ever seen of this gem of a bird! Song captured too! Amazing work!💯👌👏
Thank you Tony. It's been doing the rounds with the tit flocks over the past few weeks in the orchard opposite us so these photos and film were over a couple of it's visits. Before Christmas I had 4 feeding through the front garden. One was inches away from my face as I looked at it through my window as it fed in the climber on our trellis. Been very lucky with them here in winter
@@smudgersnature7289 That is incredible! A beautiful, unbashful subject. Some lovely postures captured too. Stunning!
Amazing views, I have never seen one chewing the cud!
I never realised they did that until I filmed it here. Well spotted
I have subscribed so that I can enjoy more of your work!
Welcome Tony, thank you for subscribing.
What a lovely selection of birds, were they all see in one day? I have never seen Kentish plover or stilts there!
No, I was there for a week. Just got very lucky with the Plover. It turned up for a couple of days. The whole week was very special. Great views of all sorts of species. May is a great time to visit
@@smudgersnature7289 Fantastic, always something to see, yes May is a magical month. New arrivals, some late or non breeders hanging on and the dawn chorus. Beautiful!
The stilt were actually a little north of minsmere, not on the reserve itself. Just south of Great Yarmouth
