You're right, Dan - Season 17. Some great stories, but the worst overall. No doubt.

You do have to wonder at how much Studio-space costs in real terms... if the BBC/Disney partnership paid for Doctor Who's relaunch then that money paid for the studio and for the Tardis set. But in a situation where that budget has now been spent, and the partnership ended, who then pays for the Studio-space, and maintenance of the set and Props? If the show is in a Limbo at the moment, with no set agreement as yet on what the future of it will be, then it may be that maintaining a set that was a symbol of the Disney/BBC relaunch isn't going to be desireable. Disney exiting means the end of that era effectively. So with no Budget agreed for any third series, no shooting commission agreed as yet, and no idea whatsoever on where the series stands with the BBC, you can see why Badwolf's bottom-line would come into play, and they are focusing on other potential productions instead. I am not sure what the BBC's attitude is to the show, it might be they like the style and the content, but the audience reception and financial demands are attracting the attention of the money-men. And in all of this is Russell Davies, with his ego dented by the lack of clear success with the series, and I just wonder if he will see the signs and choose to walk away at this point. His reputation and his pride come before his fandom...

Somebody very recently pointed out that we are twenty years on from the 2005 relaunch now, and pointed out the contrast between 1963-1983, and all those different Producers, script editors, different styles and tones brought into the series, and that contrast between the original BBC in-house television culture, and what we have had since 2005, certainly does make you think a lot. If you were to pinpoint the success and appeal of the original BBC series one clear reason is that regular turnover in Producers and backroom staff. Each Producer had a different attitude, a different experience, and were often being influenced by what was going on around them in the television world. Since 2005 by contrast the style and treatment has been more uniform, there isn't a lot of difference between the style of 2005 and what we see today. And it does all feel stale today as a result. It does need a completely fresh Production team I agree. Somebody fresh and keen with ideas. But maybe as well the series needs to become ignorant of its past again, just exist in the moment instead. I wonder if today, the BBC have allowed it to become too commercial, and have been allowing all 13-plus Doctors to 'exist', when really it needs to be _one_ - the Doctor of today.

Great show as always everyone and a huge congratulations for 200 awesome shows. Regarding the show's third series. I'd rest it for a few years, bring in brand new writers, a brand new actor, and hit the ground running like they did with the 9th Doctor in Rose.

It’s great that your doing another livestream. I think with the state of Doctor Who I liked the new season even though it was a bit hit and miss with some eps. I think certainly it’s still a success in the top 5 at Christmas, it makes a lot of money for the BBC, and the audience appreciation figures were between 77-81 and that’s not to bad for a reboot of a show that’s been going for 20 years but creatively there’s still nothing like it on British TV but I feel like there’s something lacking and I don’t know what it is. Dan have you got the steelbook of Ncuti’s first series If so what’s it like?

There is no way the bbc can afford the show on its own without a streamer, just today they put out a warning to the culture commitie that several commisioned productions are paused because deep pocketed streaming backers have pulled out, we will get nothing but game shows for a number of months, you are more likely to get a doctor who themed quiz than doctor who itself

My continuing issue/concern, is that if Doctor Who is "rested" (as some fans keep hoping it will), it won't come back for a very long time, if at all. I mean when it was put on "hiatus" in 1989, Doctor Who was popular with the fans. But Doctor Who in 2025 is a very damaged brand with a fractured fandom; and AAI figures that are as many as 26 points lower than during the original RTD era. So I would rather RTD2 be forced to redress what he's done; then hand things over to somebody who will bring back the 25 minute, multi-part story format (which would suit shorter attention-spans) and has no connection whatsoever to RTD2, Moffat 2.0 or Chibbers.

I love how fans like to appear that they are "in the know" but in reality they know no more than the rest of us!!!!

I can't say I'm satisfied by Dan's breaking news. I would rather that Disney had stayed in the picture and Russell and Ncuti were gone. Russell's out of ideas, running on fumes. And despite early promise, Ncuti has not proved popular. As was covered in an earlier show, that's not been entirely his fault; he's put his trust in those who ought to know how best to make Doctor Who, when his own approach, if only his own ideas for a costume, could well have proved far more popular with the fans and general audience alike. Is it possible that something more traditional might be delivered in Season Three? By which I mean stronger stories, more intelligent stories, scarier stories, as opposed to the tired and lightweight approach of Season One and presumably also Season Two. Surely this time those in charge will realise their mistakes and do something different. But then that seemed the logical course during the previous era. Although I suppose the BBC thought that by hiring Russell and bringing in Bad Wolf the winning formula was assured. I do wonder if Bad Wolf tried to deliver what they thought Disney wanted, but Disney didn't want that at all, they wanted something else, and expected far better from the great Russell T Davies. Again, a lot of trust was put in his ability, understandably so considering his earlier success. For a new streaming partner to invest, I would expect that the whole show will have to be analysed, from the recent episodes right through back to the very beginning, to decide what works and what doesn't, to define what makes good Doctor Who. It can't be yet more of the same from Bad Wolf, following the same 2005 format. The whole thing needs taking apart, every piece examining, and then putting back together again, discarding what isn't needed. I can't see Russell being able to do that, though; new talent needs to be brought in to look at Doctor Who, present and past, through fresh eyes. If Ncuti's Doctor could be written differently, so that he is more like the character that we know and love, in a less outlandish set of costumes, then he might, finally, win the fans and public around. It is possible. While there's life there's hope. But I'm sure to be grumbling away in the live chat expecting more of the same until that finally happens.

Where might the next 200 shows take us? Could that be a topic for a future show? What might Doctor Who be like by show 400? I understand that there are too many variables to make any confident predictions. But how and in what form would we like Doctor Who to be by show 400?

If I have one small suggestion to make to improve the show, it would be for Charlotte to have a button to press in front of her that lights up a little flashing red light on Dan's desk, reminding him when it's 10pm and time for bed. Genuinely, it's a joy spending two hours plus with my friends on Type 40 Live, the panelists and everyone in the chat. My very many thanks, once again.

Congratulations on the 200th show, Dan and the guys. Jon saying that Death to the Daleks was his first video cassette he bought, funnily enough it was mine as well, along with the Dominators and The Five Doctors (They were Christmas presents in 1987, which is when I first started watching the show). Regarding Ncuti Gatwa, I wonder if it's another Christopher Eccleston situation because you mentioned the culture behind the scenes. I have a feeling that Ncuti wanted to play the Doctor very differently from what he's been told to by Russell, because why would he come to Doctor Who and play a similar character to the one he played on Sex Education. Surely he'd want to test himself and play against type, because all he seems to be doing is playing a camp, gay man. I think the only times that Ncuti felt like the Doctor to me were in The Church on Ruby Road and The Legend of Ruby Sunday.

Disney gone, and Gatwa gone, music to my ears!

Quite the time for milestones, the anniversary of Tom's debut last month, and that for Jon Pertwee's in the current one, with Type 40's 200th instalment by no means out of place alongside them. Heartfelt congratulations for providing such a necessary, meaningful diversion from the adversity in which our show has found itself. I genuinely like Death in Paradise. As one well-chosen lead has followed another, I've also made inevitable comparisons with Doctor Who; extending on this, I harbour a wish for there to be a multi-detective edition, in which all the different 'incarnations' cooperate to solve a particularly challenging murder! Not to be churlish, but, whilst thrilled about Tom Baker's MBE, it should be a knighthood. He's served his industry, and community, in manifold ways, to say nothing of long been viewed one of our foremost national treasures. Outside of Doctor Who, my favourite role of his was Captain Redbeard Rum, in Blackadder. Rowan Atkinson was deeply concerned about Baker getting all the laughs and upstaging him, to the extent that he took him aside to remind him who was the star; only one star of that particular episode! Anne Reid was subtly unsettling in The Curse of Fenric, and overtly so in her equally memorable appearance in Smith and Jones; some people are just born to be great support in Doctor Who. The first Diary of 2025 was a typically unmissable edition. Ark in Space was a little cerebral for me at the time, coming immediately after the excellent, but more formulaic Robot; nevertheless, I still found it eminently watchable, being genuinely invested in the plight of the crew of both the Tardis, and Nerva Beacon. I love all multi Doctor stories, but have always preferred The Three Doctors. I vividly remember my mother, in 1975, telling me that Doctor Who had died, quickly assuaging my horror at the 'loss' of Tom, by explaining that she meant the 'first' Doctor. The sense of occasion failed to occur to me at the time; indeed, it fell upon Target Books, The Five Faces of Doctor Who, and untold nineties VHS releases to impress upon me the true meaning of such a loss, but I got to appreciate it in the end. So very fitting that he ended his career in the role for which he was most loved, and wonderful that he was treated so well upon his brief return. Despite being among those who felt that Paul McGann was unfairly supplanted by John Hurt, I never resented the latter, having come to greatly admire him over the years. He gave his typical best to the role, making his version intriguing and unique, and I've actually come to value the character far more than I thought was possible. The lengthy suppression of the AAI figures, rather than their actual value, speaks to a failing showrunner unwilling/unable to face reality; furthermore, they serve as a reminder that this show belongs to us fans, that our opinion will eventually be heard and made to count; lest there be any doubt of this, consider the contrivances and dissembling involving ratings and poor reviews, the defensiveness and petulance. Fear of our criticism provoked this, and our approval, or lack thereof, will always be the true metric for Doctor Who's success. As someone who has listened to countless interviews with Christopher Benjamin on the Jago and Litefoot Big Finish audios, I can attest that they are compelling evidence of both his (and Trevor Baxter's) love for their iconic creations, and their pleasure at being given another chance to play them; quite right too, becoming as they have, of equal importance to the show as The Talons of Weng Chiang itself! Rest in peace, Christopher, and thank you so much. Many thanks, Dan, Charlotte, Simon, Ian, and Jon, for so generously, and enjoyably, celebrating your 200th with us. All the best for now. Paul

That audience chart seems to put Doctor Who at a good level. But when I looked at the Overnoght figures, then the 'Official figures' next to them - just look at how the programmes above Doctor Who benefitted! Word of Mouth seems to have propelled Call the Midwife etc up the charts thanks to people catching up later. Doctor Who on the other hand... no. The word of mouth, the desire to catch up, wasn't there...

I would loved to have seen Eddie Redmayne as the Doctor. I think he said in an interview once that he would have liked to been in the show, because I think he's a fan. Also he's a star name who could attract interest back into the show. I think that's what they trying to do when they cast Ncuti because of his role in Sex Education, but it just hasn't worked.

I think Travis Fimmel would be a perfect choice as the Doctor i'm a very big "Vikings" fan and it shows he has a darker edge to him as the character of Ragnar Lothbrok and i think the Doctor should go to a darker direction and as an australian fan myself i personally would like to see an australian actors take on the Doctor i don't think it would lose it's britishness as some people might fear it would be the same result as Errol Flynn as Robin Hood or George Lazenby as James Bond all australian but the characters remained in the british culture i think an australian actor could work in that same result.

It can be tricky to judge Jemma Redgrave, I don't have any ill-will towards her either, and yet it is a valid point that a good charismatic actor can bring life to even the smallest of parts. There really isn't much to Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart on paper, he's a generic army type, but it was Nicholas Courtney who gave the character a depth and likability that raised the material - the same goes for John Levene as Benton, a minor character who was given a likability and charm by the actor playing him. With Jenna Redgrave I have never had that. The character of Kate is a good one, the airtime and material is there for Redgrave to have made a positive impression, and earned the character her place in audience affection. But the simple truth is Redgrave has never made the effort, not to my mind. She turns up, says the words, and takes the money. And that is as far as she goes with the part....

According to Doctor Who production news on X that Disney+ release schedule is a fake, as they had it sent to them by somebody, because the logo for The war between the land and the sea was different from the one used at the wrap party.

The 2025 Christmas Special would be the end of the deal if it did end. It won’t.

I love Dan Hadley's Type 40 podcast. This Mission Statement was clearly recorded in the run up to Jodie Whittaker's debut, and it's fascinating to hear Dan's excitement on this recording as he anticipates the first female Doctor, compared to what he thinks of that era now. Type 40's podcast is all about giving everyone a chance to air their feelings whether or not they chime with his own.

Season 3 has the potential to correct all the mistakes made.

You have the director, writer, showrunner and disney plus all having input how he does everything.

Once Ncuti’s schedule is free Jan 25, you will see Ncuti fully Invested in Doctor Who for the next 10 months.

Disney Plus hardly promoted Joy to the World because They Promoted their Star Wars.

It's becoming increasingly likely that the show will be rested after the upcoming season . If it returns I believe it should be back to basics...doctor plus companion tackling alien menace in all of time and space...it worked for 26 years and for the 2005 relaunch ie..good script, good actors and don't patronise viewers..if it is good an audience will be there ( at the moment..well ...oh dear ) love your podcast all the best ..Alan 👍

If I am just listing the Doctor: Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker, Matt Smith, and adding in Big Finish Colin Baker. John Hunt last one out. I just can't get over the puppy love sickness that covered the Tennant's years. There are so many others.

I remember this. The Dan debut. Except for the horror that comes into my heart when he mentions Jodie, it was a great episode and I adore Kyle as well.

Ah...Halcyon days just before the dark times... How hopeful, optimistic and naive we all were lol

Wow, this is (possibly appropriately) quite a time capsule of a podcast. Dan there with hope, looking forward to "next year with Jodie Whittaker". Oh the nostalgia.

Started watching Dr. Who back with Pertwee in the 70's. I have a room in my house that contains my Dr. Who collection. Just pre-ordered Season 7 Collection bluray and The Savages (2 x steelbooks, 1 x bluray and 1 x DVD). Have not bothered to watch this years Xmas spesh. Have not purchased Disney Who season 1 to add to my collection. It's not Dr. Who to me. Such a shame that everything that used to make Dr. Who great has been expunged from the show.

BTW...my guess is that War Between will be the Xmas Special next time.

I saw half of it later on then switched it off it just wasn't Doctor Who for me, considering this is Moffat's last story it doesn't live up to his own legacy as a writer for the programme.
