Back To Backcountry - P1 - Buckskin Lake Canoe Trip - HHWT
I was heading back to the Backcountry! After some minor health issues, I felt strong enough to head out for a weekend on a canoe trip and even complete a portage. Physically, I knew I could do it, but mentally I still needed a bit of motivation. After talking through my plans with my friend Jenny, and finding out most of their weekend was open, I decided on a half-and-half trip. The first half being a solo trip and the second half being joined by Jenny Tyler and their son, Aspen. It was an awesome weekend, full of so much fun and laughter and lots of epic summer moments.
I hope you enjoy the trip, as much as I did. Huge, thank you to my friends for giving me that extra push I needed.

Camper Christina Cooks - Pie Iron Dessert Pie - Apple & Marshmallow Pie - Mountain Pie
Переглядів 44621 годину тому
In this video, I make a delicious dessert pizza in a pie iron. I used to make them a lot when car camping with friends in Longpoint, but have never made one in the backcountry. The original plan for this weekend was to camp on Kiosk Lake, with no portages, but due to some issues, I switched the trip to Upper Crane in Haliburton. I had to do one small portage with the heavy pie iron, but it was ...

While on a 6 day canoe trip through Temagami's challenging Muskego Wildlands, I create and enjoy a simple but delicious meal. I have never really tried using tuna in a meal for dinner before. I know lots of people have, but I honestly didn't think it would be tasty, so I never attempted it. I was wrong. It's delicious! Hope you enjoy the video and it inspires you to try something new, like it h...

What is the water temperature and how does it affect you? If you're out paddling early or late in the season, it is something you should know. There are far too many senseless deaths every year on the water, that could've been avoided. Please, understand the risks you're ta...

    Great to see you back at it C. I have done a half dozen trips when it was the Leslie M. Frost Nature Reserve and it didn't cost us a penny back in the 80's. Kevin Callan's book Cottage Country Canoe Routes has quite a few detailed trips for what is now the HHWT. Nunikani was my favorite.

    i used to enjoy being " unplugged " then I broke my leg backpacking in algonquin, fortunately it was the fibula I broke so I was able to make my way out , but had it been any other injury I would have had to wait for someone to come by ... I now use a zoleo, it pairs with my cell phone so I can send and recieve messages and get weather updates and contact search and rescue , now my family has peice-of-mind when I am in the backcountry

      I’m so sorry to hear about your fibula. I’m glad you made it out okay. I carry a rescue link beacon with me and when I do trips in remote areas, I file a report with the federal government. It’s only in case of extreme emergencies, which is how I like it, and thankfully, I’ve never had to use it. It’s nice to know it’s there if I need it though. Thanks so much for checking out the video and taking the time to comment. Cheers!

    One thing I read from a book of an old Indian technique is if you are trapped in the cold and not warm enough, is to stuff leaves and debris into cloths for insulation. I know was not cold enough for that, but good thing to know incase it was a hyperthermia situation. Nice carrying the survival blanket and handwarmers with you.

    I just recently did this loop and the portages are advanced level, easy to roll an ankle on all the boulders. I am a seasoned tripper, having done most of Algonquin Park before 1983. A GPS and SOS is a "Must" here, I just thought your followers should be aware as I thought your channel was for beginners. I had to pull my crocks out of the mud many times up to a foot and a half deep with a few leeches too! It was a great trip and I admire that you did it solo.

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina 3 дні тому

      Thanks so much for the comment and the information. I am not sure why you thought my channel was for beginners, if that’s even a thing. Maybe because I have a backcountry camping course for beginners online? But that is for beginners, I am definitely not one. I do a huge variety of trips, including car camping, winter camping in my own homemade hot tents & backcountry winter solo trips, canoe and kayak trips year round, up to and including crazy challenging portaging trips, which are my favourite. I use a rescue link beacon on all of my adventures which is connected to the federal government and I file a trip report with them sharing all of my trip details in case of any issues. I have taken many canoe, kayak, first aid and navigation courses, in addition to over 20 years of backcountry camping. I also present at many shows on a variety of topics related to solo camping. I am mostly known for doing incredibly challenging remote solo trips in Temagami and have been solo tripping since 2015. You can find all of this information on my website at CamperChristina.com. 😊 My videos are always very real and I don’t sugar coat anything I do. I show a good amount of the terrain that I’m traversing and speak about safety as much as possible, both in my UA-cam videos, and on all of my social media platforms. I also received an award two years ago from the Canadian safe boating council, for promoting safety on the water. I’m very surprised you attempted these portages in crocs. It’s definitely risky not to be wearing proper footwear on terrain like this. I’m so happy you didn’t break/roll your ankle and made it out safely. Thanks so much for checking out my video. If you’re looking for some more challenging trip routes, please check out my Temagami playlist. There are many more challenging trips located in that playlist. Safe travels & happy camping to you. 😊 cheers !

      @@CamperChristina Yes, I checked some of your back ground, I guess in the back of my mind I seen the beginners on your course and thought you were attracting a specific group, my mistake. I prepared by looking at many vids before doing this trip as I am 65 this year. Out of all the vids for Bark Lake/ Lac aux Sables, not many actually show to much of the portages ( yours showed the most). When you would say "Stuccy muck" I really didn't imagine what I was in for, and that "Lift Over"...man. I have done hundreds(maybe a thousand but whose counting) of portages and never seen it like that, ever. Although we have had alot more rain in the north than last year. Even Lost Lakes didnt show any of the ugly parts of the trip, which I think You-tube channelers should do. I use my crocs only in situations like those, otherwise I have hiking boots for boulder terrain, I would have lost them if I used them at the swampy areas. I dont go anywhere back country without my GPSmap 66i, I love it. Thanks for your input, I just subscribed which I rarely do...Cheers!

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina 3 дні тому

      Haha sucky muck. It’s muck that sucks. Lol. My own term,,which has caught on quite well in the outdoor community. Thank you so much for clarifying and for the wonderful comments. I am cursed with the bad habit of filming too much. It’s great for people who are researching areas to explore but it’s an extremely lengthy process when I’m editing my videos. That being said, I do my best to really let people understand what they are getting into when they get to some of these places. Sometimes, it’s extremely difficult to complete all the things, and to film,,but I do my best to take photos or verbally explain if I can’t video something difficult. I have an app called avenza that has my maps in it and it’s gps based so I can see everything as well. It’s saved my life many times in Temagami especially. I’ll have to look into this gps map 66i you mentioned. Never heard of that one. I think it’s amazing that you’re getting out there on trips like this. I hope I will be doing the same in 10 years. Thank you so very much for subscribing. Wishing you safe travels throughout the season and I look forward to hearing from you again! Speaking of liftovers, you should check out my obabika loop trip in my Temagami playlist. Just brutal but awesome at the same time. I truly love the challenges. Lol. Cheers! 😊😊😊

    Thank you for this video!! I can find 900 videos on what new gear rich ultralight backpackers put in their bag but rarely do I find videos to compare my pack with what's in experienced solo portage camper's bags. Simply being a Canadian woman alters what's in the pack vs videos I've seen from like some dude in Michigan going 'canoe camping'. This was so valuable, thank you CamperChristina and RileyOutside! I never did a portage beyond the safe embrace (and crowds) of Algonquin but CamperChristina slowly sold me on Temagami, I'm headed there in August for 3-4 days and I hope to not see a soul lol. Thank you so much for this video!

    What a day of paddling! It not only takes physical strength but also a lot of mental strength.
