  • My first solo canoe trip of 2024, took place at the start of May on Cat Lake in the Haliburton Highlands Water Trails. May Long weekend was coming up fast, and I needed to get some portaging in. This spot was perfect, as it begins with a 630m portage. I booked an awesome site that I've stayed on before, and enjoyed gorgeous weather, tasty food and a new book I was anxious to read. I also had a few surprises. Hope you enjoy this weeks video! Happy outdoorsing!

    The green plaid H2O canoe is made of basalt innegra and carbon innegra and has most of the same specs as my previous 14' 6" pro lite solo canoe from H20 Canoe Company. You can find more information about it by clicking the link here: h2ocanoe.com/c...

    Thanks for bringing us along, it looked like a nice time. I’m glad the rain held off until you were back. By the way, I average about five jumps. Be well my friend.

    Thanks for the video. I always feel sad leaving a camp site because it's the only time I'm in the canoe at the break of day and life at that time just feels so wonderful. I also wanted to say I haven't heard whippoorwills in many years. At one time I used to hear them all the time, even here in Algoma. But a lot of birds have disappeared. At least I still have the Black Backed Woodpecker. Best wishes.

    Nice trip! I have a question is that not crown land or a National Park because how can someone build a cabin there? That cabin looks huge almost like a resort

      It’s called haliburton highlands water trails. Several of the lakes they have available to camp on have a few cottages on them. Many don’t and the ones that do are mostly smallish. Lol. This one not so much.

    A question from someone in the US. When you book a camping site, what is the normal hours you have it booked for? Like 6 PM until 9 AM the next morning? Is it the same for other parks like Algonquin or is every park different?
    Thanks!

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 місяці тому

      Great question! It depends on the park, but for the most part, check in/out is usually around noon. I usually check the reservation system late the night before to see if the site is booked so I can go sooner is it’s open. Some parks you can see that online, like this one, others you can’t, like Algonquin.
      I knew this site was open when I arrived as I’d checked the online system at 11pm the night before. Therefore you can camp on it sooner. And if no one comes the next day you can technically stay longer but if someone has it booked you have to evacuate the site by a certain time. Usually around noon. Hope that helps !

    what happened in that trip you had with Riley, did you confront with people at the campsite where you had permit of?

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 місяці тому +2

      Yes, it was a single woman camping. We told her we had booked the site and she said that we should take a look at another site that was open to see if we’d like to switch. I knew the other site was not very nice but Riley said we’d go look. We did, then returned and told her we preferred the site we booked and told her she would have to take the site she booked. We told her we’d paddle around for a bit and would give her time to move. Here’s the trip video link if you’re interested in checking it out. Cheers!

    may i sugest taking along a small battery powered chainsaw with extra batteries for dead branches and small fallen trees?

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 місяці тому

      Lol. You can suggest it but I’d never do that. I’m a backcountry camping. I’m def never going to carry a chainsaw on a portage. I’m only one wee girl and I have a lot to carry already. Take a look at some of my Temagami trips. This little stuck is nothing compared to some of the obstacles there.
      I hope you enjoyed the video? Cheers !

    The noise you're hearing on the recording is wind blowing across your microphone. I'm sure someone has found a solution for people who film with their phones. It does make it hard to hear what you're saying.

    • @CamperChristina
      @CamperChristina  4 місяці тому

      Sounds like a great suggestion but it happens when I’m indoors as well. It just does it for a few seconds now and then. It’s random. Lol. I have been filming with my iPhone for nine years now. The sound is new. I know what wind sounds like in my microphone. Lol. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers.
