Old School Maths taught by an Old School Teacher using an Old School Calculator. Doesn't get any better than this for us old blokes.
Good one Aaron . 👍
Thanks Max. Cheers mate
Great explanation and demonstration buddy!!! That was way more simple than I remembered it being. Haven't actually done that since high school. I'll have to look and see if I've got a calculator like that....good excuse to buy one. :)
G’day Mike. Thanks mate, I hope other UA-cam shop machinists find it useful. I’m not sure how this playlist will play out. But I’m not too worried about that, as long as I / we share our knowledge. In my case that would all fit on a postage stamp LMAO 🤣
@@AaronEngineering LOL....my amount of knowledge is the tiny bit of spit it takes to wet that stamp. ;) .....which is a lot less than it takes to lick a nipple. :)
Good one Aaron 👍
Thanks Max. Let me know when you’re ready for me to ship those parts over to you. Cheers 🍻
@@AaronEngineering Any time you are ready . Am in my shop mostly full time now . Cheers 👍
@swanvalleymachineshop ok mate let’s touch base during the week.
Gday Aaron, brilliant idea for a series that’s going to help a lot of us, maths and I have never been good mates so all help is needed 🤣, cheers
G’day Matty. It’s good to hear from you mate. Thanks for that. Yes mate, Math is one of those things if you don’t use it you loose it. Cheers buddy 👍🍻
Good one buddy! 👍
Thanks Tom. I hope you put that formula to good use 👍🍻
@@AaronEngineering I did. I figured out how many holes I have in my head. 🤣🤣
Lever handle problem
Motor bearing problem
I am going to look for a local CNC shop that can do this exact thing for my bike build. If it’s ok to ask, what should something like this cost.
Hi Robert. I did this one on mates rates as Rohan was a former student from back in 2009. He bought me a bottle of bourbon from memory 😜. Where are you based mate (I’m in Melbourne, Aust)? I might be able to help you out. 👍
@ I am in the States. I live in Oregon. Let me look up shipping rates and I have both the old triples and new triples. Just need to swap over the steering stem.
Great info. Clear explanation. I'll be using this in the future.
G’day Kevin. Thanks for watching the video mate. I’m glad you found it useful. Hopefully you’ll be able to give it a crack sometime soon. Cheers Aaron.
Nice! I finally get to use some of the math I learned in school. Thanks for the educational video.
G’day Mick. Always fun if we can apply some of the maths we learnt from back in the day. Thanks for watching mate. Cheers 🍻
Better fit and finish than a new car mate.
Thanks Anthony. Like the old saying goes, “it’s like a finger in a bum”! Ha ha ha cheers buddy 🍻
no more PCD PTSD
Ha ha ha good one Anthony. We’ve all got a bit of that buddy from past trauma in our lives. Cheers 🍻
you made that look easy! really looking forward to the gear cutting one,, cheers👍👍👍
G’day mate, glad you enjoyed the video. Gear cutting is coming up soon 👍. Got a few machining videos coming first though. Cheers 🍻
Great information Aaron thank you
Hello and thanks for watching. Glad you found it useful. Hopefully you can apply sometime soon. Cheers 🍻
Nice vid Aaron. Good idea to do a few in a series. Can I respectfully suggest using a marker or much softer pencil as normal pencil does not show up well. Keep up the great work.
G’day mouse. It’s lovely to hear from you mate. I hope you’ve been well. Thanks for the tip, an excellent idea. Cheers Aaron 👍🍻
Good info mate 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Robert. Happy New Year mate. I hope you’re feeling better? Glad you enjoyed the video buddy. Do you remember this formula from back in the day when you did your training? Cheers 🍻

Damn, that was succinct and very well demonstrated.
Hey Russ. Thanks for watching and providing positive feedback. Hopefully you can put that formula to good you soon. Happy New Year to you and the family. 👍🍻
I learned something today! Thank you Aaron! Great video.
Hi Guy, how are you mate? Thanks for watching, it’s a good little formula this one. Give it a crack in your shop sometime. Now on a more important topic, have you been up in your new vehicle yet ⛅️ ? Cheers 🍻
Great video Aaron! I'm going to recommend this to my students. Request for the next shop math: tapers with (D - d)/ l. Keep up the great work!
Hi Adam. Glad you found the video of interest. Absolutely, share it with your students. We used to teach this in the old MEM12024 unit. Good suggestion I’ll check it out 👍🍻

Hi Aaron , nice gifts . Have a great Christmas ! Cheers 👍
G’day Max. Thanks mate, Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family mate. Let me know when to send your stuff please 👍🍻
Great little Xmas video mate 👏👏👏👏 That little ‘starters kit’ is indeed for Apprentices. My Dad got me one from Hare & Forbes at Xmas 1965 ( started as a 15 y.o. at Cockatoo Dockyards in Sydney, in January 1966. First two pay packets contained £.s.d. ( pounds, shillings, and pence). Your mate in America will love that gift 👍 As for Bernie… I’ll put my name down as a new subscriber to a Re-born AME magazine. When I heard of the demise of the AME, I rang the publisher and said I’d pay DOUBLE to keep the subscription… and I’ll be hundreds and hundreds ( thousands?) of Oceania model Engineers would do the same. Halelulja 👍👍👍👍 Merry Xmas to you, Di, and your lovely family. Regards, Your Most Unworthy Monkeys Balls Student, Grasshopper PS Az…. You look most relaxed there mate… must be the job change eh? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
G’day Robert. Merry Christmas 🎄 mate. Oh didn’t know that. Was that when they were Herles?
@ Hairy Forbes? Nahhhh…. They’ve always been H & F. ‘F’ got out in the 50’s I think… So it’s all owned by the HUGE Hare family. In fact, one of their service techs told me that the family could stop selling machines tomorrow, and still be earning millions from all their ( industrial) property portfolio.
Merry Christmas Aaron
Hello Kimber. Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family mate 🍻

Hello dear, I hope you are well. I visited your UA-cam channe Aaron Engineering. My Week this Week.. Your content is excellent. But your channel isn't growing because your content title and description aren't optimized for SEO and don't have enough ranking tags. This is why no content reaches the top of UA-cam. As a result, the SEO score of your video is very low. According to VidiQ, (The video SEO score of your channel is 0 / out of 100, which should be 80+). If you want I can increase it to 80+ which will help your channel grow faster. If you reference your videos correctly, the progress of the channel will bevery soon and subscribers and views will increase. If you want, I can troubleshoot and help you rank your videos better. If you are interested, let me know.
Will do thanks 👍
Could you use the carriage to drive the broach on small keyways or in soft materials.
That’s a good idea 👍. I haven’t tried it, but you might be able to on smaller size broaches. There was a lot of pressure on the tail stock broaching these 4 flywheels. Cheers. Aaron
I own an 1987 Hafco You data plate has your manufactur date of 10th month 1988
Hello and thanks for watching. To tell you the truth I just had to check the video again. Yes it does say 1988. Is my model similar to yours? Cheers, Aaron.
@AaronEngineering they are basically the same, mine is a 415v that i use a 240v VFD to control the RPM aswell as run on single phase. Im looking for a surface plate as i would like to scrap it in and give the big girl a paint job.
Aaron Thanks for the video
Hi Frank. Thanks for watching mate. Regards, Aaron Powter
I do it like you. But I strated to pre-cut the groove with a handsaw, then the broach doesn't have to remove as much material, it's much easier.
That’s a very good idea 👍. It would make it much easier to do and less load on the tail stock screw. Cheers 🍻 Aaron
@@AaronEngineering I used the sleeve for the needle as a template and drew lines with a marker. Then I made a few very careful cuts next to each other with a handsaw. You don't have to saw everything away. You just have to be careful not to saw too wide or too deep - of course. Greetings from Austria! (no Kangas around here, just cows)
I just figured you would lean over the work and push the broach thru with those big ole bear paws you have. 😀
Ha ha ha, I've got enough weight behind me don't I 🤣
For a weight I use swarf from the bandsaw (with resin), It's fine and works well.
Thank you, that's an excellent idea. Another viewer also suggested using sandblasting garnit or granite. I tried the expoxy resin & cast chip swarf yesterday. It worked well, but most of the cast settle on bottom pushing resin to the top. I had to pull of the resin and add more cast chips. Cheers, Aaron.
Nice bit of progress with the motors mate. Some good tips in there .
Hey Micheal, thanks mate. You taught me everything I know buddy 😉
@@AaronEngineering Longest 20 seconds of my career.
Theres something to be said about good old Aussie ingenuity. What a brilliant idea to press in a keyway broach using the tail stock of the lathe bloody genius if you ask me. Just a thought I had regarding them gears you mentioned at the end. Why dont you look into using them nice 3d printed ones as a template for doing them as a casting? You could set up a little sand casting mould and do them out of aluminum cans or some of the cast swarf maybe I dunno Ali cans for sure thought that would work great and not be too expensive to do.
Thank you so much for your kind comments. To be honest, this idea came to me the other day. I was going to purchase an arbor press, but the wife's been up me about spending money 🤣. So I had to go down a different route. That's why my nickname is Humpty Dumpty machining company. Bloody motor mechanic (my first trade) coming back out in me. Great idea about the cast gears. I always wanted to have a crack at foundry and pattern making, but a bit scared of the set price and spilling molted metal down my boots or on my thongs LOL. Cheers, Aaron.
Fantastic, Paul in Florida . US
Hi Paul. Thanks for watching mate. I hear that Florida is a beautiful place. Cheers Aaron
Swarf and resin will be hard to pour and will probably get a lot of air entrapment. I get great results with garnet sandblasting media (grit) and about 20% resin, it is cheap, heavy, and incredibly strong when set due to the very high strength of the garnet particles. And it comes out as a reasonably attractive purple-brown colour. Rather than mix it too dry (which most people do with epoxy-granite type mixes) I mix it wet enough to pour off a spoon, then pour it in and tap it settled, then skim any excess resin off the top.
Hello and thanks for the feedback. That’s some good advice. I didn’t think of using that. I did two pours yesterday of the resin. I did notice that the weight of the cast swarf did tend to sink down causing the resin to lift up. I just kept sprinkling more cast on it until full. Cheers Aaron
@AaronEngineering Great! I can't wait to see the result. 👍 Yeah the swarf can work if it is very fine particles rather than curly tails. Curly tails get entangled and clump up and get a lot of air entrapment etc.
G'day Aaron. Excellent job using the arbor, finding that everything fitted together eventually. I noticed you put oil on the key & shaft before you assembled it. I don't remember oil going on the broach when cutting the slot to size ? At least you know what your next project izzzz .. Build a 20 ton Press 😮😅😊. Ted
G’day Ted. Always good to hear from you mate. Yes cast contains graphite (self lubricating) so I didn’t use oil when broaching it. I did put some oil on the shaft as it was a tad tight and I wanted to get if off again 😂. Cheers 🍻 Aaron
Top result - that worked great. Great way of doing key ways on occasion. 👍👍
Thanks Stuart. I was surprised how well it actually worked. Cheers 🍻 Aaron
Hardly a drama ! 👍👍👍
Thanks Max. Yes it worked very well. But glad I’m only doing 4 of them. Cheers 🍻 Aaron
Good stuff, I had my broaches out just the other day on a love job for the neighbours.
G’day Lance. Thanks for stopping by mate, I appreciate it. These little Chinese HSS broaches worked a treat. Cheers 🍻 Aaron
What a great guy you are! Giving it a courtesy flush! 😂😂😂
G’day Ian. Glad you got a laugh mate. A bit of Aussie humour to make the video go down easier 😜. Cheers Aaron
