Check out how I dive some of the best sites in San Diego!

Sinking of the HMCS Yukon | July 15th, 2000
Переглядів 329Рік тому
The San Diego Oceans Foundation had the HMCS Yukon towed to San Diego for a controlled sinking off Mission Bay. After thorough cleaning, the plan was to use explosives to ensure the ship sank upright. The strategy involved creating holes on both sides of the bow and stern, letting water fill the ship evenly. However, before this plan could be executed, swells during the night allowed water into...

Nothng is recognizable. Entering by the stern would've meant passing by the ship's laundry, tiller flats, my mess (10 mess aft) and other places like store rooms. Glad she's still of use somehow.
I like that you appreciate marinelife and you aren't there to kill it. the oceans need our help. I wish we could turn more dive locations into natural no-take preserves
nice video and thanks for not taking any marinelife... we need to be kinder to our oceans.
I can't wait to see it for myself. I'm moving to pacific beach in January, and Mission Bay will be a 10 minute walk from my place.
fantastic video ...thanks for sharing. YOu sound like you really love the marinelife and ocean environment... nice to see
Love your videos! I have a couple of questions. First, to reach the turtle town area, would you recommend swimming straight out from the Marine Room entry about, say 50-100 yards then turn southwest? Second, to reach the La Jolla Cove kelp forest, would you recommend swimming straight (northeast) before turning due north? Thanks for your kind consideration!
Thank you this video. I was a member of this project. Good to see her
Thank you! Always wanted inside there but not sure how to get to the bottom and where to park
Its one of my favorite sites!
Is that a leopard shark?
7 gill shark. leopard sharks are a lot smaller.
So cool
This guy was a lot of fun!
awesome dive!
Very diverse sea life, thank you. I’m a newbie paddle board guy, have you seen any sharks on your adventure
Not in the bay but there's 7 gill sharks in the kelp near La Jolla cove and leopard sharks near the Marine Room restaurant . Both are harmless though.
cannot believe how picturesque it is under this bridge... been over it a million times
Its a beautiful spot for sure.
Is this still available for diving? And how far down did u have to swim to see some sea life? I’m just a free diver and I’m not that good either lol…but it looks super cool down there
Yes, you can still dive here....You're asking how far down....well you can see stuff all along the supports. You'd have to catch a boat ride out there.
What thickness of wetsuit do you typically dive in for SD diving?
For scuba, minimum 7mm but a lot of people use drysuits. You can get away with a 3mm for snorkeling.
Awesome video
Thanks! I saw a few people coming out of that area with dive gears and always wondered how it looks like underwater.
And if you head a lot farther out it gets pretty deep but there's a lot more life in this area.
Can you spearfish there ?
No, it's a MPA, Marine Protected Area.
Really helpful and informative video, thanks so much!
Fished an office chair out of there on a free dive. Fairly easy place to learn.
10/10 video I loved the shots and I really appreciate you drawing out the route on the map and describing how to navigate by what you'll see. Been wanting somebody to do the exact same thing for the beach next door at Shaws cove I haven't been able to find the biggest trench.

I should get back at it and do Shaws. When you're taking about the trench you're talking about the little crevasses you can enter into from the edge of the reef? There a lot of fun but can end up in white out conditions pretty fast if a swell comes through and fills the area with champagne bubbles.
That’s where my buddy and I certified. Did the Montasary Crawl. Visibility that day was 50+ meters
The famous crawl....50m sounds like an epic day!!
If you can get in it’s a great dive. My buddy and I swam out around 500’ then dropped down to around 110’ then made our way back in, the bottom has a stair case like rocks around 80’ it looked like the edge of the continental shelf. There’s giant white sea anemones way down there. Stop every 30’ to off gas but slowly make your way along the bottom. Funniest part was swimming out and past a guy fishing in a small boat 😂. Just be careful cuz it can get rough out there. Read the ocean beforehand!
Boundary wall doesn’t exist anymore. Whale must have rubbed itself on the wall and flattened it all out to boring sand. Nothing to see here
It was there in Dec of 2023.
Bait
Great video and narration, my go to place (Divers Cove) to dive (1973-1990) in So Cal. We would wear our tanks walk up the stairs and go to the old dive shop (Laguna Dive) on PCH get our tanks filled and get a second dive in.
Get it was a whole different game diving with 1970s gear. Maybe even more life back then?
So... what's the rule with snagging a few of these gorgonians for a saltwater tank at home?.. 😁😏
Marine protected area. Also, you likely aren’t maintaining a cool enough tank, though I don’t know your setup. They like temps in the 50’s and below. Above that they start to cook.
Buy one, this is marine protected area and even if it was not you still cant do that to coral. It took thousands of years for those to be made and so manny people mess it up for everyone else, this spot is so nice because its so far out most people use scooters to reach it. This dive site has a special place in my heart. Please rethink your mindset.
@@justinshepa Too late. I have a team of Nigerians harvesting them for me and my business is already booming.
Random question…how was the cell service? Trying to go on a Friday but need access to my phone in between dives 😁
no service at all
Is the anchor still there? I dove this recently with a buddy, we found the bouy, but it only had one line on it, and the wall looks less steep than it does in the video, I think im in the right spot and it just changed since this video was made, also havent gone past 100ft yet to check out the rest of it
Good question, I'd have to pull it out and check. I don't remember it being an issue, or even something I thought about and I'm usually careful with these things, especially after cross threading a screw for the grips on an aluminum Kimber frame. I should have known better than go with aluminum. Sorry for the late reply though. Did you give it a shot?
La Jolla is so beautiful.
I’m looking for a diver to help me recover a fishing pole I dropped off of a dock . Know anyone how can help me ?
Sorry I missed this, Hope you were able to get it back.
I love this dive site. I would also note that it's super important to keep your regs in while getting in and out of the water
We used to do this dive back in the early 90's. It was referred to as the "Banzai Wall" back then. Really cool dive
Back in the 70s I was in High School and me and my school buddies surfed most of the various beaches in SoCal . We were avid readers of Surfer Magazine , and they frequently featured photos of people surfing La Jolla Shores , Blacks Beach and other nearby surf spots . We all decided that we should go there and check it out . I then came upon an article that said the La Jolla area was a place often frequented by Great White Sharks , which had routinely been caught off of the Scripps pier . It also said there were submarine canyons adjacent to shallow table areas running perpendicular to the beach that GWS use for coming close to shore and darting into the flats to capture prey . That's when I decided not to surf there , much less than night scuba dive there !! 😳😯🤯
They are there and I often find them while flying my drone in the area but they're generally small so they eat small things like stingrays and they're often times swimming just passed the break among the surfers. By the time they get big enough to eat mammals they head out to deeper water.
@@SDScuba... And when you say "small" your talking about eight to ten feet 😱
Great vid. How is your camera mounted ? Or hand held?
For this video I was using a gopro mounted to a tray, so I'm holding the tray with 2 hands.
Very cool!
Promo SM
that was an awesome dive video. Mad me smile the whole time.
Sick, kayaking in there is fun as hell , as long as you beat the tide push ha
Awesome clip wow, thing looks ancient
Get rid of those sound effects in the background irritating..ahh
Thank you for the tour and description of the reef. I got to do this dive yesterday and really enjoyed it. Very pretty. Loved the sponges, the wall, the different cuts in the reef and the kelp. My new fave area to explore more often when conditions are good❤
Love this video!
Thank you!!
This is cool, where did you find these?
It came from a DVD called Project Yukon produced by the San Diego Oceans Foundation. There's a few more videos and a bunch of pdf documents that came with it that I have looked at yet.
Very nice work here
All good news. What fish is that @4:24?
Almost looks like a Giant Kelp Fish but it's the wrong shape. I'm not sure.
@@SDScubaThanks for the reply. Pretty sure I've seen that in one of my books but haven't been able to find where. My vague impression is that it's one of those obscure weird sculpins. Looking forward to progress reports on the Yukon reef. Should be fun.
Can't imagine why you didn't go diving that day! I'm seeing some real laidback entries in this footage. Some of those waves were only 20 footers! 🤣 Great stuff! Hopefully things are a bit calmer down there now.
Haha, i know huh.
1/10 video
You mean 10/10?
WOW I like, what drone do you fly because you have audio and my drone atm does not record audio at all some times lame but a nice to have.
This was from the DJI Mini 3 Pro but it doesn't record audio either. I downloaded sounds of waves and birds and added it in.
@@SDScuba That thing goes so far! I can't believe you flew it all the way from OB to the cove and handled to wind very well. Might have to get me one
@bloblablah7409 that would be pretty impressive If it went that far but it's not that amazing. I flew the route in multiple segments and combined the footage. I drove up and stopped at a bunch of spots, flew that section and moved onto the next one, then combined them. They're great fun though.
yo. useful done, have a good one! 😮
