  • Its a long swim and its deep. I'd never try it with choppy surface conditions as the swim would be miserable and exhausting. Its miserable and exhausting anyways. Someone mentioned that this can be done as a boat dive and its by far the better/safer option. Quick correction about something I said regarding the urchins eating all the kelp. It seems that their main predator, the sunflower sea star has been dyeing off because of a new disease. Without any predators the urchin population is exploding and they're eating all the kelp.
    Max depth: 130' (depending on the mix I'm diving that day)
    Average: 65.8'
    Dive Length: 50 min
    Min Temp: 51F
    Corrections:
    2:48 The "rockfish" is actually a juvenile greenling.
    7:50 The fish hiding in the algae is a giant kelpfish

      Thanks! I think you don't hear much about it because of its depth and how far the swim is but its a great dive.

    Since youre in SD. Last time I snorkled jn the L J cove the red tide was so bad we couldnt see anymore than a foot or two in front in front of us. Nice to see this clip. Have a safe trip back.

    Monterey diver here. That urchin looked fine, it’s the purple urchins that are devastating the kelp forests up here. Most shops around here run courses on how to kill the little bastards.

    • @SDScuba

      The bigger darker ones? Is all that happening in Monterey as well? For some reason I thought it was farther north.

      @@SDScuba Smaller purple one. Rocks get covered in them, you’ll see entire reefs with nothing but the urchins all over them an nothing else. It’s pretty bad.

      @@yourmumcallsmedad Right? That barren at Pt Lobos is the worst because that area was such a great dive when the kelp was healthy. Lobos is still one of the best sites around but it was so much more incredible when that forest was healthy

    You should launch an SMB when doing a blue water ascent.

    • @SDScuba
      @SDScuba  Рік тому

      That's a great point. A lot safer to warn boats that divers are below.
      Funny story about that though. One time when we were trying to identify lineups for a dive, we tied off our SMB to an old concrete block, then ascended so we could choose lineups.
      We then headed back to shore to grab fresh tanks. While we were on shore we saw a kayaker trying to retrieve our smb that clearly said "DIVER DOWN" on it.
      The guy was pulling really hard but it was tied off on the bottom so he eventually gave up.
      If we'd been on a safety stop I would have had to let go and he would have taken it.
      But you're still correct, its safer to deploy a SMB. I get comfortable diving in a preserve with very little boat traffic but we should be deploying.

      Sort of La Jolla Cove. Maybe I could have created a better title but this isn't the normal cove dive. Its much farther out than most people ever go.
      I did a more traditional cove dive a while back but should probably do another with more info.

    So... what's the rule with snagging a few of these gorgonians for a saltwater tank at home?.. 😁😏

    • @MrIheartShark
      @MrIheartShark 3 місяці тому

      Marine protected area. Also, you likely aren’t maintaining a cool enough tank, though I don’t know your setup. They like temps in the 50’s and below. Above that they start to cook.

    • @justinshepa
      @justinshepa 3 місяці тому

      Buy one, this is marine protected area and even if it was not you still cant do that to coral. It took thousands of years for those to be made and so manny people mess it up for everyone else, this spot is so nice because its so far out most people use scooters to reach it. This dive site has a special place in my heart. Please rethink your mindset.

    Boundary wall doesn’t exist anymore. Whale must have rubbed itself on the wall and flattened it all out to boring sand. Nothing to see here
