Caffeinated Warlord is a UA-cam channel dedicated (mostly) to Kings of War, be it battle reports, painting videos, Kings of War news, multibasing examples, or just showing off some armies. I am not a master of this game by any stretch, nor am I an artist of any substantial skill, but I do have the need to show off how much fun Kings of War is. So grab a coffee and join me!
This channel used to be Couple of Dabblers with my wife Floz, back when we weren't sure what content either of us wanted to produce. Now she is firmly into cross stitching and I am super into Kings of War, it made sense to go our own ways on UA-cam.

The Abyssal Dwarfs have received some buffs in the latest Clash of Kings, can my Riftforged Orcs survive the mortars to claim victory? This is the final round of the the 1 day tournament I attended. It was a lot of fun and here's an epic battle to end on.

Kings of War Battle Report (24): Goblins vs Varangur
Excellent report
AMBROXEN is official!!! ❤ heck of a battle report! 🔥
Classic German noun pluralization. And thanks! It was quite the fun battle even at the end of the day
It's true - Orcs are better than Elves. In fact, Orcs are better than anything.
To withdraw and flank charge, you would need to pivot on your center after an inch withdraw. Could you make that pivot to charge? My group rules as a no unless a square base. (titans and heros)
Unfortunately for Andrew yes you can. Regiments of cavalry, infantry and heavy infantry all have sufficient space to pivot 90 degrees after the withdraw. Brinton Williams has a very helpful article on dash28 titled "You can do that? Kings of War gotcha moves and how to prevent them"
Great battle report, cool army showcase, nice tactical analysis, super fun watch! Also I think Ambaroxen is the funniest/best plural 😂
Ambaroxen is then canon until I hear from Ronnie!
@@CaffeinatedWarlord "Bugs" works too :p
That's for my opponents to say 'The only good bug is a dead bug!' when they charge one
Fantastic video! Do you think you'll ever have any firefight on the channel?
There's a GCPS Starter Set on my shelf that says so
Does RFO Shrine allow you to cast a different spell after casting the first one? You casted HotSB and then BC but the rule says „After successfully casting Bane Chant or Host Shadowbeast, the Stormforged Shrine may choose to cast either spell again with 1 less die on another appropriate Riftforged unit within 12” regardless of Line of Sight or Arc. This may continue until a casting is failed, no unit may be targeted twice with the same spell.” The word „again” suggests you can cast the same spell not a different one after successfully casting the first one, right?
The "either" part means you can choose which of those two. Otherwise it would say "the same spell again" not "either spell again". Also I have used this against an RC member and he didn't say I was cheating 😅
@@CaffeinatedWarlord, thanks for clarifying. I saw only one other person playing this way. Everyone else I played repeatedly cast BC, which aligned with my understanding of the rule.
Aren't a lot of historicals rank and flank? Especially those set pre-1900?
Definitely! It's where the whole genre started, but as far as awareness in the social consciousness, it's Warhammer Fantasy that gets the exposure. I never knew about historical wargaming in Australia until I was playing Warhammer Fantasy and heard about Warhammer Ancients. Even then, I didn't actually know anyone playing it. So while Fantasy isn't the be all and end all, it's certainly the flagship
@@CaffeinatedWarlord That's fair. I certainly heard about Warhammer Fantasy before I heard about Kings of War, and that was when warhammer fantasy was still dead.
Thanks for the report, I enjoyed it. Like you, I have the Storm in the Shires set and I'm running a Halfling army so need to do something with my Riftforged Orcs in a year or so. One thing I learned recently with my Halflings, the Sauceror can never go higher than Rally 2.
Of course it doesn't! It can't stack to higher than two so why would the gastromancy be able to? Thanks for that!
Nice! Rarely get to see Halflings or RF Orcs! They're also interesting because they're some of the few KoW armies not based directly on a WHFB army.
That's true! The Halflings definitely feel like an interesting and fresh army in the wargaming world. The units themselves are all pretty average but somehow together they make a formidable force without just bumping up basic stats, or being a horde army. I would start halflings if it wasn't for the fact everyone has them 😅
Riftforgers: I told you 😂 I was experimenting with 3 mounted with their own HSB...
The endgame! But for now I'm going the three ambarox... I like shooting while everything takes it's sweet time moving up 😅
Yeah tbh I was impressed with the ambarox, but by god they're pricey for what you get
@@DeathByDragons if they had crushing strength 1 they might be perfect, people would be reluctant to ignore them entirely as the battle lines meet
@@DeathByDragons also Mike Crossman give me the ambarox idea and he knows what he's talking about .. right?
😬
How tall are the models in mm? Are they comparable to GW Orruk Ironjawz?
The Forces of the Abyss are getting a revamp this year?
That's the plan. Was hinted last year at Clash then confirmed one at least one Counter charge podcast video interview. When it will happen and what will be added or remade, who knows!
@@CaffeinatedWarlord my guess would be plastic Molochs and Tortured Souls models, and new unit types for those kits to be dual purpose
Yeah those tortured souls need an update! I hope that if it is molochs, they keep the look and just make it a lovely customisable kit
Really enjoyed the army introductions and army list explanations.
Thank you! I'm forever tweaking just how much to say during army list reading, can't be too long because visually there's not a lot going on, but glad I got the balance right here
Great video. Me and a friend were originally looking to get into ToW, but since discovering KoW we much prefer the simpler ruleset and cheaper minis.
I truly love the Warhammer setting, but for so many reasons now it's just not something I can get back into on the tabletop. Glad you've found Kings of War! It really is a simpler game, and a lot more fun for it (less bookwork, more gaming!)
These are always such insightful reports for a beginner like me.
Fantastic. I always try to keep them from being too dense, but please let me know if something is needed like saying what each unit on the battlefield is.
That turn 4 impalers into the storm bringers, it did not look like a legal charge because the impalers couldn't end their pivot clear of the orcs... 53:57 Pivotal moment I think
Ooh good catch! Although I assume you mean the Helstrikers, but yes I think they would have clipped the horde. I didn't tell from my angle but from the top down view it's quite clear!
@CaffeinatedWarlord team ork all the way To me it seemed obvious because the overrun would have brought the horde into contact with the impalers, I thought it was very clever play until I saw the next round
Ah but the Voidlurker in the rear was still unfortunate, at least the helstrikers might have lived to take down one more thing!
I really love the format of you guys bat reps! So well done! Keep up the amazing KoW vids. You represent the game so so well
They've come a long way since the first versions, and glad you're liking how they're turning out now!
@@CaffeinatedWarlord The last 3 have been fantastic. I am not particularly partial to the 'talk over picture' format that plenty folk use. I much prefer the handi-cam style. Speeding up the movement means we can still see it but its not taking up tons of bat-rep time. Perfect
@5p3cu10 I think I will reserve the talk over the picture version for tournaments, if people still want to see those. Otherwise maybe it should be exclusively 'live'?
@@CaffeinatedWarlord talking over tournies like that, works great. It means that we (the viewers) get to see that. Otherwise we would have no views into tournies. Is it easier to edit together the photo videos? KoW is a game that has almost zero representation with regards to "live" bat reps. Your edit style is very easy to follow and you get in as much of the bat rep in as can be which is great!
That's good to know, I have a tournament to make into a video right now! The live aren't much more effort, and personally they're more fun to make and edit. More interactive and more agency for fun editing. But both serve a purpose, get Kings out there so more people discover it!
Love the cat watching the dice rolls at 12:30,
It made editing the footage a delight! What's Barbie doing? 😂
Good Stuff!
Thank you! 😊
Great game!
I was curious about the numbers on a magic item for the king on flying wyrm, so I coded up a brute force solution and ran it a hundred thousand times on each configuration, averaging it. vs. Def 5+ or lower: Baseline: 4.16 Blade of Slashing: 4.51 Mace of Crushing: 4.64 Sword of Sharpness: 5.54 vs. Def 6+: Baseline: 3.33 Blade of Slashing: 4.51 Mace of Crushing: 4.64 Sword of Sharpness: 5.55 So basically, Mace of Crushing gets you about half a wound in a face-to-face combat, and the Sword of Sharpness gets you triple that. So the Mace is more efficient (.1 wounds per point vs. .04 wounds per point), the Sword gets you well into 5 average wounds, while the Mace does not. I think more experienced players will do better with the Mace, as they will likely be better at getting flanks with the charge. 9 or 11 wounds will likely break a regiment either way (troops are dead without a magic item, and hordes are lasting a turn even with one), and paying for overkill isn't ideal. I think I'll continue to use the Sword, unless I really need to free up those points.
Definitely the Brew of Sharpness will push the damage output to the next level, but that points efficiency of the Mace of Crushing is just too good. In general I just try not to use 20+ points items, more room for more units (maybe)
@@CaffeinatedWarlord Oh, boys before toys for sure. The only must-have magic item in my undead army is the Inspiring Talisman for a necromancer. If I can scrape together the points at the end for a zombie regiment to camp out on objectives, I'll do that. If not, the Book or Lute for a USB and the Brew of Sharpness for the RKoUGFW are next on the list.
That acronym is insane 😂
Heres my opinion on the old world. GW noticed a rising popularoty of rank and file games, (KoW, conquest etc) and they could not believe that theres a profitable market that they thought dead that theyre not tapping into. They dusted off old, ancient even sprue molds, slapped modern prices on 30 year old kits and started appealing to the memberberries of fans older than 30 years old. As such, i refuse buying their 30 year old minis for modern prices and instead 3d print and/or play other game systems.
well done guys... Tks for sharing!
I'm keen to get into KOW (come from other wargames) but in Australia KOW has such a small community. Not the games fault, but unfortunately warhammer dominates - hopefully this changes.
It is hard. Only the big games survive in the outback. My hometown in country Victoria has only 40K and AoS, there's not even Old World. Thankfully Melbourne has a decent KoW scene of 40-50 players all up.
Even Adelaide topped out at about 8 players when I was running events pre-COVID. I wish they were out there and gathering for games again.
Most of the smaller cities and the regional areas are completely GW games, which is fair, they're relatively easy to acquire. But maybe with old world taking off you never know! Would be good to have an excuse to go to Adelaide
I’m not sure how I’m just now discovering this channel but I absolutely loved this battle report (especially that ogre army paint)! Keep up the content fellas, I’m going to have to watch a bunch more of these now! ❤
Welcome! There might one day even be some Firefight content! I've got a GCPS starter box itching to be built
@@CaffeinatedWarlord I’m all about it! The more the better!
Love all these battle reports! So good
Really glad you're enjoying them! They're quite fun to make 😁
This army is SICCCC
Thank you! I'm looking forward to expanding it, and doing some horde or legion level multibasing 😁
Excellent and really like the way it's a 2nd hand "resurrected" army, with a few Basileans/Abyssals included alohng with the gallows/rack etc :)
It's a real Mantic mix! And as I've said I am now inspired to continue it! Especially as project RFO is very nearly complete...
Go wood elves! Go Wood Elves!! GO WOOD ELVES!!!
Some of the best painted wood elves I've had the pleasure of facing as well!
I live this battle report! I didn’t know who to root for the goblins or the halfling!
It's all the same! Root for the little guys 😁
awesome work mate
Sweet miniature reminds me of chaos warriors
Yeah, the full plate with trimming looks great. This army is almost done!
To paint all of this is an achievement in itself. And you’ve done it beautifully!
Thank you! I never completed armies when I used to play 40k, but something about the end goal of multibasing drives me to get it all done!
Great Video! You must be over the moon about all the undead releases on the mantic Vault. I'd absolutely love to see some firefight content as well in the future.
The release of Zombie Trolls is incredible! The question is how many hordes are too many? Three? Four?? I look forward to getting some GCPS together and on the table, so why not make content for that, too? Glad to know at least one person is keen for it!
Count me in! Firefight is awesome
This is awesome, especially those multibases. You mentioned you went to a tournament in Springvale which is close by. Where is the best place to find out about local tourneys?
The Facebook group "Kings of War Victoria" is the best place for events around Melbourne. The event in Springvale is ConVic facebook.com/events/s/convic-2024/1061841425071148/ It's a great event, with players travelling interstate for it. Unfortunately we are stuck on Facebook
@@CaffeinatedWarlord awesome thanks! I'll give that a join.
Really enjoyed this. Love the shoutout to my buddy Keith who won Clash Asia :). Yes regiments of wraiths are surprisingly good.
Writing up the Goonhammer interview allowed to find out how he used those regiments to great effect, so I am very keen to get onto them. I guess I was stuck in the thinking that "chaff must be as cheap as possible" so only considered troops, but those regiments are secretly nasty!
I've basically never seen anyone playing AoS in Australia. Someone told me a few years ago that at Australia's biggest wargame comp there were more AoS players than 40k players entered. Seemed hard to believe since I'd never seen anyone play it at all, at that time. I've tried Conquest. It plays fine. The models are insanely expensive though. My friend got the starter box second hand, I helped him assemble and we tried it out. Thought yeah, ok, I might get into this. Saw the prices of models and bailed. Was similar to GW prices which was way too high.
AoS is reasonably popular around Victoria, with certain clubs and shops heavily invested. And at CanCon AoS remains a major event. I tried for a little but it's not the way I want to play fantasy. If I want skirmish I'll play 40k. As for conquest, I did think of trying some models for proxy. There's very beautiful models in their range, but the cost really is prohibitive
GW has succeeded in bringing tabletop wargaming into the modern zeitgeist, so yay that's awesome. But they've become such a toxic company that has such a high barrier to entry with their pricing that people will look elsewhere to scratch their gaming itch, which is also awesome. There are enough wargames out now (both square and round based) that I feel like we're entering a gaming renaissance.
It's amazing what's available to choose from in any given genre. 20 years ago it was so limited, but now we are all free!
Considering how gw keeps purposely understocking their stuff, I'm not sure the main point stands unfortunately
It is profoundly understocked and also coming out way too slowly. But still people need Tomb Kings and there's a whole array of dry undead at Mantic 💀
@@CaffeinatedWarlord So we show people what there IS (KOW) rather than what there isn't
The main issue with all rank n flank is that it hasn't evolved
How would you evolve it? Alternating activations?
@@CaffeinatedWarlord that'd be one way. One page rules uses that
German bomb in germanu
Beautiful armies, gents! And a great report, I enjoyed the longer format from you. Also much love for your owlbear <3
Thank you! These are quite fun to edit so I'll try and get them in between tournament footage as much as I can. The Owlbear was surprisingly fun to paint despite the attention needed per feather, so I am glad someone noticed ☺️
Where did you obtain the terrain hexes used for the board? While I love 3d terrain, terrain cards are a lot easier to store and they can offer some great artwork.
TerraTiles! I got them from Kickstarter and I really like them. Full battlefield in a small box, literally.
Nice report. Thanks for the vid. Playing around with gobbos myself. Hadn't thought of mindfog before (and even though you had terrible luck this game) I can see its quite handy. Those halfling are quite the force o be reckoned with.
Mindfog is becoming my new favourite spell. If there was a Mindfog 3 going around that would be perfect. But on a wiz or flaggit it's a budget banggit (for the shattering) that can reach across the board! Yes, my luck is especially bad when the camera is rolling 😅
Only got into warhammer fantasy because of total war
That's very interesting! I have not yet met someone who has come from the Total War franchise. Never into miniatures before?
I enjoyed this so much it's probably become my favourite Kings of War battle report! More please!
I'm really happy you liked it! More will be coming up for sure 😊
I can see doggie toys randomly on the floor. It's kinda cute Glad you guys had fun. Dan must be happy now because the video is finally out!! 😂😂
You can even hear the doggies at the start haha!
2d3 rolls a 3 and a 1...FOUR!!! HAHA
I wonder is there a problem with the base sizes? The Old World uses bigger bases than the old Warhammer Fantasy. Is it possible to use Models with ToW-Bases in Kings of War?
Absolutely. Units in Kings of War are at set sizes - troops, regiments, hordes and legions. These have specific dimensions depending on unit type - infantry, cavalry, chariot. So people get a big base at the right dimensions and then put their minis on it. Can put enough to completely cover it like a movement tray, or a few less and make a nice diorama (see my goblins!). That way it doesn't really matter what individual base size is. Except the Arachnarock Spider, that's massive
ah very nice, because i thought about trying out KoW additionally to ToW. All i need is the current KoW Rulebook and my ToW Army i guess. The Empire of Dust Model range looks very nice but i think all my Khemri models could easily cover the Empire of Dust unit types. @@CaffeinatedWarlord
Many people are used to Tomb Kings as Empire of Dust. Skeletons = skeletons, tomb guard = revenants, ushabti = enslaved guardians, casket of souls = soul snare. Some models that have less direct comparison but are very useful units are the Monolith and the Idol of Shobik. Can see the units on the mantic website and either get them or think of what you might use in their stead.
