Gone Kayaking

Приєднався 7 кві 2021
This channel is where we share our experiences, information and tips for kayaking in our local area and when we get somewhere more exotic. There is naturally a lot around the Solent though also includes other interesting trips we make much further away such as South America, Iceland and Europe.
I freely share tips and tricks as we go with the primary aim always to have fun along the way while exploring new places and trying new things and new kit.
If you wish to help support the channel, there is the link below to treat us to a coffee. In reality of course, the costs to run the channel include the obvious camera and kayaking gear as well as editing software and when possible, music licenses.
Many thanks to all who take part even by just subscribing is a big help

Sea Kayak repair (Plastic), Open Water Crossing, Yachts, Race, Jetskis, WW2 WWII Submarine Defences
This is a simple crossing of the Solent (UK South) and up the creek into Newtown. However, along the way I describe the history and repair of what I have often referred to as the 'Dented Delphin' and we have a quick look at the Sowley Boom which is a Submarine Defence from the second World War.

Warm NW days down here, mid 20's. I'll be off to dip a paddle very shortly.
Ha.. smarty pants. I'll make it down there soon
@@GoneKayaking Got to 27. Unfortunately I found things to do on the way to the lake. There is always tomorrow. Your welcome to borrow a yak or two, or a ski.
@@gadgetman_nz4092 That would be amazing! I'll stop procrastinating and make a move.
Cracking weather you had for the trip, we have been wall to wall grey and got more of that coming for the rest of the week if the forecast doesn't change.
It was amazing weather but I'll confess, this was a few weeks ago now. I've been slow editing it. Its been grey fest here too recently and crazy storms on the only free weekends.
@@GoneKayaking It has been shocking how bad the weather has been of late. River levels have risen a lot here in Norfolk, Not as bad as they were last year, but enough to stop our Work Party from doing river clearance this Friday in preparation for our Round Norwich paddle that would have happened by now normally, but with last years sudden level changes, the Club thought better of doing it this year and will be one of our Preseason paddles all being well.
@@Simon_W74 around Norwich sounds like a scenic one. Perhaps that should be on my to do list..
@@GoneKayaking It takes in three rivers and several portages, one being about a mile and a half long. We are based on the River Wensum and then I think we end up on the Tud, before getting onto the Yar, which once going up stream joins the Wensum. From the parts I have paddled it is lovely and going through Norwich and seeing the old Warehouses that we do have left is really interesting. I could paddle from Home to Norwich via the Broads in theory. No idea how long it would take or how far it would be. Would expect to have to camp a few times, and hear Get of My Land a few time too.
@@Simon_W74 Sounds like a good trip. I'd imagine there an occasional pub in case of any sudden thirst issues too.
Hi. Can you tell me what model is your kayak, please ? Thank you.
@vincentleger1370 for sure. The blue is the PH Valkyrie and the yellow is the PH Delphin 150. Many thanks
I reckon this is possibly the place I’ve kayaked the most, and yet I never get bored of it! 😊
@@peakandpaddleuk absolutely.. its quite unique and very spectacular. I'll catch you on the water out there..
Surely, one of the best trips on the South Coast - what a Grand Day Out!
@@wavesoffun definitely a favourite sir.. A lot of good stuff and easy access 😁
That part of the Country looks amazing. That said any part of the coastline that isn’t Norfolk with our lack of none falling into the sea cliffs is amazing. We have stunning beaches, but I just love looking at the geology in our cliff formations. An amazing way to spend a few hours. I ordered a P&H Scorpio HV in Scarlet Red in the end. So just waiting for delivery and my knee to stop being a pain so I can get it out on our inland waterways or parts of the North Norfolk Coast
Sounds great. You can't go wrong with a Scorpio. I'll be watching out for a few Norfolk themed videos. Thanks for watching Darren
Ah, Scorpio's are fantastic boats - you'll love it. Welcome to the P&H club!

Have to admit, I have not paddled into a cave. Looking a how shagged Shag Rock ended up the idea just doesn't appeal yet.
@@gadgetman_nz4092 Haha.. yes. We have a few shag rocks here too and they also have a certain shagged appearance. I do ponder the risks for each one like headroom vs swell and a poss capsize where there's rock in my face and no room to roll up. Thanks for the comment. I'll look out for your cave video 😜 My best caves are these... ua-cam.com/video/U_MaMx_865Q/v-deo.html

@@kayaksnorkeluk8272 haha... I can't read English very well so wasn't sure what the sign said 😉
Even without getting the swell that you wanted to be able to have a good surf you were still going along a fair speed going by the water passing your hull. I am looking at getting a P&H Scorpio at some point soon. I do like the look of the Valkyrie, just have a weight issue that means I wouldn't be able to take as much kit being on the heavier side as a paddler. So most boats I am at the limit weight wise and some I simply could get my legs in. My current boat is a bugger in the wind even with a low deck profile, and very little rocker. I end up paddling as if I am in a canoe just to keep straight compared to others using the Dagger Stratos from the club. I have the Wave Sport Hydra at the minute. a very comfortable boat, but one that really gets on my nerves when the wind picks up or trying to turn it quickly.
Thanks for the comments. The scorpio is a very good place to start and the HV must be pretty huge. I am 6ft 2in and fit well in a Scorpio MV. The Valkyrie is also a very comfortable fit but the low rear deck limits the boot space in the rear hatch. I can still do overnighters with no issues though. For me the Valkyrie suits the local conditions well with occasional rock hopping, but mostly open water and a bit of surf where possible. I get that it won't suit everyone. Enjoy the journey and keep in touch! I'll look out for updates. Thanks Darren
@@GoneKayaking I am now also 6'2" was taller but have shrunk a bit over the years. My main issue is being 110kg. which does surprise people that I paddle with. That puts my right within the weight limit of the Valkyrie with my paddling kit on, the MV Scorpio is about 15kg of kit carrying capacity left over, with out my kit on. I have had to buy relatively light weight camping kit, without going ultra light and having a tent that is too small to do anything in if the weather is being a bit naff.
@@Simon_W74 aha yes.. I took the smallest lightest tent to Iceland with me - and regretted it when stuck on an island with rubbish weather for a bit so just lying there in a canvas tomb for a while... haha.
I don't understand that 'perfectly normal'. My biggest fear is waking up one day and finding I'm normal. Great video, looked a heap of fun.
absolutely..! normal is no good. It has become my pet phrase for taking the p155 when something isnt very normal... On a different topic - I used to live in Christchurch NZ and worked at the airport there so just looking at your videos brings back some great memories! Thanks Darren
@@GoneKayaking Live about a 30 minute walk to the airport. Yes I tend to walk most places, despite owning half a dozen motor vehicles, about 20 bicycles, 11 kayaks, 2 surfski's, power boat, dinghy, .... As I said, I just don't do normal. You probably saw a video of the Boys Brigade boys at the airport getting a ride. I've been a leader for 35 years, so they get to use a fair bit of my gear along with the Girls Brigade. Unfortunately someone stole my trailer a couple of months ago so hard to get many kayaks to the water at the moment.

I enjoyed that video. I did a lot of river race kayaking in my youth and if I ever manage to live nearer the sea I could easily take this sport up.
@@dougie1325 thank you so much for the feedback. Its a great sport to move into. I came from waveskis 'some' years ago so I still chase a wave when possible but equally enjoy the calm days like this one with some sights or wildlife along the way. Thanks Darren
You make great videos but what is it with the terrible music? Why does everyone add rubbish music to their video? Why not get a recording of sea birds or something in keeping with the scene. I can't watch it. What a pity.
Thanks for the comment. Its a common question which I covered in my recent video. Long story short though: The salt destroys the camera so its is in a dive case. The dive case muffles the audio so the quality is awful. Any sound track has to be license free as these videos generate £0 for me. Even a soundtrack as you mentioned, would be blocked as copyrighted unless I pay for a public license. If you can suggest a source of decent music that is legitimately license free, I will adopt it with pleasure. I'm not thrilled with the free choices either but while the revenue is £0, the music will also have to be £0. Have a look at this video to see and hear more on the topic. Cheers Darren ua-cam.com/video/CnoHt74T_C0/v-deo.html

New sub here , why dont you include the sounds of the sea and padlling ratger than music and continuos talking ?
Morning. Its a common question. The camera is in a dive case so the audio quality is no good. Occasionally there is some of the original audio but its a long process to try and correct the muffled sound of the dive case. On some of the earlier videos I didn't use a dive case as the insta360 X2 is allegedly waterproof.... However, the salt still found its way into the microphones and made the audio unusable. Eventually the salt ruined the camera altogether. I hope this help explain. I understand not everyone wants to listen to a commentary. Thanks Darren

@@Glyn69 thanks for understanding. All the best Darren
Many thanks for sharing that adventure. Stunning views, I was with you all the way. Superb kit and beautiful Kayaks that must be an absolute joy to own. You were blessed with amazing weather and all in UK waters. Very well done.
Thanks Phil, It really was a great week with some good friends. It'd a challenge to beat that weather too.. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Darren
How many hours did it take?
This took 5 hours. Plus the time stopped at Dani's bar.. A great paddle though. I loved it
Cranking weather for your trips. You can't beat the sea on the West Coast, unlike the East Coast and parts of the South. It may be warmer, but you can't see much though the water. I used to Go to School in Hayling Island and the water was brown. Now live in North Norfolk and the sea is brown. So When I go up to Mull each year I just love being on the water or in it snorkeling. Can't be crystal clear water.
Yes, we were really lucky with the weather. I've had occasional trips in Cornwall with clear water but not always the case. It's quite a surprise when its clear around the Solent. I'm pretty sure we'll head back to Scotland fpr more paddles. Perhaps go right around Arran as a start...
Brilliant wee adventure video from up in bony Scotland. :) Thanks for visiting us, cookies were ace :) keep inspiring, keep spreading the Kayak joy :)
Our pleasure sir.. Thanks 👍
Surfskis are probably more common in the UK than you guys realize. Ease of self-rescue? Really guys? The fellow in the Octane has equipment falling out of his ski and clearly has not learned surfski remount well at all. Has he had any lessons or has he just "figured it out" on his own? Do you think he has spent 1/20th of the time practicing his remount that you spent practicing your roll? It isn't difficult, particularly in a stable surfski. Ease of self rescue is considered an advantage of surfskis over sea kayaks by many paddlers who have significant experience in both. If you can roll up in any kind of water, congratulations, but that is not your average sea kayaker's skill level either.
Cheers Paul This was one of his first tries in the octane he has had a lot more practice since, some planned and some not.. no training though - this was him figuring on the fly.
@@GoneKayaking Thanks for the reply. I have no complaint about his efforts. I like your videos and find them both entertaining and informative. But I found your comment about surfski remount ease (based on his technique at this point in his learning process? - that's some basis for any kind of evaluation) fairly misleading particularly when you follow that with your "easy" roll. Apples and oranges in terms of instruction, practice time, (and probably age and fitness of the paddlers) etc.
@@paulreavley5900 no worries, its a fair comment. I've never tried in the octane as its a faff to change his foot rests so I can't give a fair 1st hand judgement on getting back in it. (Though I'll happily chuckle at Chris' expense). Looking back at the video now, yep - he made quite a meal of his rescue but he's a bit slicker now. I started my paddling on waveskis in my 20s (a wee while back) and always appreciated the aspect that a failed roll wasn't a rescue mess in the rough stuff. Now I'm older and softer though, I like the enclosed, warmer environment in the yak. I suspect my CofG is slightly lower in the Valkyrie too even though its the same hull as the octane so the yak version is a touch more stable
@@GoneKayaking Fair enough...hard to evaluate merit and tradeoffs without adequate trial and experience. You might find the added leverage, acceleration, and speed from the surfski (from its higher seat, design to maximize use of leg extension, rotation, wing paddles, etc.) a fair trade off for the difference in stability in the kinds of conditions where surfskis tend to shine. There are certainly UK paddlers very experienced in both vessel types (e.g. Tom Thorpe at Surfski Dynamics) who can give you a reasonable list of pros and cons for each...
