Welcome to the Traveler channel: I do a lot of hiking, camping, city trips, and some bushcraft. Doing all that traveling I thought it was a good idea to share my experience with you. I tested a lot of gear over the years and I like to help you decide what gear suits you best. I don't create a lot of content but I'll try to make it as comprehensive as possible to give you the information as objective as I can.
I hope you enjoy watching the video's and wish you happy times in the outdoors.
Greetings,
Wim
PS, I'm Dutch so the words may come out weird sometimes, apologies for that.

PS Someone justly pointed out that the hiker in the beginning is the climber. Sorry for that mistake. I will go over a selection of knives to help you decide which one is best for you. It is of course only a small sample of what Victorinox has to over but it's a good place to start.

Might be the best camp knife around. A small field-test to see what it can do. Only downside is its price, at least in the Netherlands. I combined the blade of the Opinel Garden knife with the handle of the Opinel Oyster knife. I takes a little bit of adjustment but it does work. Thanks for sharing. I also use and have 2 of these stoves, but I prefer to use my diy bottle cap alcohol burners. I can't find the Monster drink in the can with the screw caps but any metal bottle cap that will hold a bit more than 15 ml of alcohol will have no problem boiling 300 ml water. I stuff the caps with carbon felt or fiberglass insulation which makes them spill proof. When I use fiberglass I put a piece of stainless screen from a dollar store sink strainer over it. Any 4 oz. bottle of alcohol will allow for plenty of fires. I really like your idea of putting a grate over the stove 😁👍

Great explanation Thanks. You talk about carying food in the tins. I put my kitchen stuff inside, like i saw they do in Scandinavia with alu boxes. I made a vid about these mess tins as a field kitchen kit on my channel.
What an amazing video! I really appreciate how you explain step-by-step how to tie the different knots, and your calm, clear instructions make it easy to follow. It was also great to see that you filmed this in Sweden - the background and atmosphere give the video a unique touch! The setting adds a relaxed vibe and highlights the practical use of the knots, whether for fishing or other outdoor activities. Thank you for taking the time to share this information, and I love how you go into detail about each step. This video will definitely come in handy for my next outdoor adventure!
Respect that you still answer the comments of people asking questions even after 3 years
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Ive got the same Tilly hat and greatly enjoy it. I used it and the one with a larger brim on hiking the Continental Divide Trail in the USA. I still wear the LTM6 daily. Very light and fits the bill. Thanks for the nice video. Anyone wanting info on Tilly's ought to be able to see the this is a nice hat after watching this.
Thanks!
Impressive I like both
I have a BPS and the BeaverCraft. I cant stop the BPS from chipping. I never had a problem with the BeaverCraft.
Hele informatieve video.

Bedankt Wim. Groet terug.
Great informational video 🎉 thank you !
I wish you gave links or part numbers or anything.. would love to get an led bulb and battery to get mine up and running.
Hi, I looked for E10 led lamp 3V. And the smallest as possible because you still need to close the lit. For a battery holder you can choose between 2 x AA or 3 x AAA. Just google battery holder AA or AAA and you'll get tons of options. Obviously I ordered everything in the Netherlands but you can probably get it locally. Greetings and good luck, Wim
@@traveler5898 e10. Perfect thanks 🙏 I did find some stuff that looked right bit I didn't want to blind order and hope. Haha
Wow. Seems like the first true review on the whole internet
I really like my Lars Falt. Does anyone else find the sheath a bit loose? I had to wet form mine.
Mine is not too bad but certainly not the best retention.
@@traveler5898 Thanks mate.
This vs kephart 4?
Also a great knife. But at 4 inch almost a main blade. I'm looking for a great small camp knife that can also handle I little carving and whittling. But the Kephart 4 does look like a great allround knife. Greetings Wim

Metallurgist's opinion: The knives look good, especially those without a Scandi grind. However, I see an issue with the steel used, 1066. It will sharpen easily, but the edge retention won’t be great for the price. The exception is the Beta model, made from D2. As a metallurgist, when I compare 1066 steel with 0.65% carbon to something like a carbon Mora made from C100 (almost identical to 1095) with 1% carbon and significantly better edge retention, the BPS knife doesn’t fare well in terms of price-to-edge retention ratio. Essentially, you’re paying an extra $45 for a wooden handle and leather sheath, but not for the steel. For example, the Ganzo G807, which costs around $18, has two to three times better edge retention than the 1066 BPS, and 9cr14mov steel is fairly corrosion-resistant (with 14% chromium helping with edge longevity). Sure, it has a plastic handle, but 9cr14mov is a much superior steel to 1066. If BPS knives were made from 1095/C100, O1, O2, or ideally 80crv2, I wouldn’t complain. But in this case, I don’t think BPS knives are worth the money (with the exception of the Beta model in D2). It’s also important to note that different steels can be processed differently. BUCK’s 420HC proves that even an average steel can perform well with excellent heat treatment. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with BPS. Look up "BPS knife edge retention," and you’ll see that among the tested knives, BPS in 1066 performed the worst, making around 50-60 cuts of sisal rope. Even a carbon Mora costing $7 handles 90-100 cuts. The Ganzo G807, at $18, does 160-170 cuts, and knives made from 9cr18mov or 14c28n reach 250 cuts. BPS makes visually interesting knives, but given the 1066 steel and its average heat treatment, they’re more suited for collectors or occasional users who might cut a stick a few times a year. (And they’ll be surprised how quickly the blade rusts when not in use).
Thanks for this comprehensive reply, You got a point. I guess if you're seriously in bushcraft you don't get a 1066 knife. Some people do bushcraft on the side. if you want a practice knife that looks good and is easy to sharpen and cheap it might be a good option. I have it as a knife to compare to other knives. (what do you get for 50 dollar) But I never use it as my goto knife. Greetings Wim
@@traveler5898 That was my point, BPS is not cheap. For price of BPS you can have better knife or even much cheaper. Looks good, thats all. Remember Old Hickory knives. They are US made, 1095 steel (only little bit softer than could be), let's say it's similar processing level. Old Hickory is cheaper than BPS. In my country BPS knives costs about 60-70 bucks and we are really close to Ukraine (CZ).
OK, here they sell for 35-55 euro depending on the model. Still not cheaper than a Mora but not too expensive. I understand why you would buy an other knife. Enjoy the outdoors Greetings Wim
Nice, TIL the Evenk/Siberian hitch! Looks fast and easy. Have you heard about the Double Dragon knot?
I think i came across it once but can't remember. I will look it up. Thanks! Greetings Wim
I checked it out and really like it, practice it as we speak... thanks
Thank you for the most excellent review / discussion. I learned so much about my new Tilly watching your video. Cheers!
I immediately hated the Joker Ember it had such a wide grind that making feather sticks was the only thing that is good for
Nice review. What boots in your opinion are better made and more durable Wellco or Baltes? I want to buy a pair. My feet are used to army boots, but I need a pair that are durable and will last longest.
Hi, I think they're both pretty strong. But the Baltes boots are better quality I think. The soles of the baltes boots a much harder (last longer). But mine do make stripes on hard floors like linoleum or wood. So indoors you have to be more careful. Greetings Wim
Thank you.
I was thinking about buying one of those books, but now I am convinced. Thank you very much
video's seems to play a bit fast......
Again a fantastic video, thanks a lot!!
happy to help
Thanks
Good review. Got the red serrated. Spectacular precision
Use them a lot. Just back from Sweden, Denmark. They are fantastic.
It's really sad when law enforcement considers a swiss army knife a weapon. That is just tyrannical. Especially when i see criminals with machetes committing crimes and being considered a victim. How much more will that in the name of safety?
This is a very informative and useful video on standard army issue aluminium and steel mess tins. Anyone concerned about leeching of aluminium into food should avoid adding salt until the food is ready. It's long term boiling of salted water that causes leeching.
Ok, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing this info. greetings Wim
Love my Tilley hats.
Realy a very usefull video, and again great camera work❤
I’ve owned the Joker Ember with curly birch scales for a year and a half. It is quite a versatile knife for camping and bushcraft. The thickness and grind are great for larger tasks. Fine, detailed carving is possible but cumbersome. I have a smaller, thinner Kellam Puukko for fine carving. The two together are great companion knives.
Sounds like a great combo, I like the Ember aswel, I replaced it with the Trampero because of the pommel. I use a Mora 1 or 1/0 for finer work. But there are many options..... Greetings Wim
I hope joker stays affordable.
Beaver knifes are not bad for the price. And I had them out there. And had no problems like you had.
What size of glove do you where? I have a big hands and have trouble with knife handles being comfortable.
Size 9. What makes handles uncomfortable for you? I like most handles from Joker, Cässtrom, Helle and some Condor knives. But I usually look for the models with bigger handles. Greetings Wim
@@traveler5898 I run out of space in handle length. I often don’t have enough handle, like the helle egen, or the handle pinches my hand in with the bird beak at the pommel like the benchmade bushcrafter.
@@pathrst I know what you mean. I never buy a knife with a pommel that is to weird. I prefer the classic designs. My best handle is the Casström Lars flat knife. I also like the Mora LOK, Joker Trampero and Cudeman BS9 are not bad either. Greetings Wim
Love my Tilley's and now your channel. I know Tilley's are tough but I would never have thought I could scrub them so hard😂
Fantastic video!!
Aluminium! Not Aluminum. No such element or metal.
oeps, good to know. greetings Wim
@@traveler5898 Sorry Wim, the pronuncation and spelling is an American idiocycracy. They are the only people in the world to use this.Well maybe the Pinnoys do as well?
Hi there! I'm a big fan of Morakniv. With my Mora 2000, I can handle everything I need for camping and in the forest. But I wanted a cooler knife. However, the Mora AHS WOOD collection costs $200 for the same steel as the Companion. That's ridiculous! Then I discovered the Joker Bushlord. I watched your video and trusted the knife. I ordered it online, and it arrived today. I'm very satisfied with it. Thanks for your video!
Great review. Everyone else I saw they had it for a bit and did a small review. At most I saw a one year fete review. I’ve bought mine in 2014-2015? and used it everyday and I’ll continue to use it until it breaks. Besides a small rip in the shoulder strap it looks almost brand new, even after the years and years of everyday commute, camping, scuba trips, hikes, climbing, dogs, cats, photo trips, this bag has seen it all. The only thing that I can fault it is not having a water bottle bag integrated. The water bag compartment makes a great documents holder. Love this bag and I’m amazed it still looks almost good as new.
Yep, mine is still fine aswel. If it ever breaks down i will get the next model. Greetings Wim
Were wellco available 2 years ago? I heard the company closed. I live in Peru and got a Wellco pair but I think they may be a clone, though they are high quality and sold as American made (there is no china label anywhere) compared to the local made WellcoPeruana's and the claimed Chinese made. They look identical to yours and have the same pros and cons, but the draining eyelets are metal mesh instead of poked holes. Mine have a small label that reads "wellco" and a US flag, with the size and year of production stamped in white on the front inside. Do yours have this label? They costed 180 PEN which is about 45 USD. Nice video, cheers
Hi, mine has the label also. On the left shoe it's on the right size. US flag with WELLCO underneath it (one label). Printed in white (front) is name (top) than size underneath (two sorts) and at the bottom "nail protected". So it seems ok. I use only once a year on the tidal flats. Holding up so far. Greetings Wim
The ember is too thick for it's size
Подскажите,пожалуйста,как долго вы их разнашивали?
Great video. Thanks.
Great comparison, thanks for the time you put into this.
The chisel and file come in quite handy for whittling. It's much easier to make anything concave with the chisel and the file is great to smooth out the carving lines which is especially great if you carve any tool with a handle, like a wooden mallet. It's just much better to use with a handle that's filed smooth. Also, the saws are the two thinnest layers you can have on a 91mm Vic, so adding the file and chisel to a Huntsman doesn't really make it all that more bulky or heavy. You can also use the file to file your nails and clean under them with the tip which as you said is quite handy! The Ranger is just insanely tool dense and in my experience every tool on it comes handy when bushcrafting.
Good point, It comes down to how often u use those tools compared to the volume and weight. For me the huntsman is more than enough 95% of the time. Having said that, I usually also have the Ranger at the campsite. As long as the tool works for you, you can carry as many layers as you want. Or as many different knives. Greetings and enjoy, Wim
