  • PS Someone justly pointed out that the hiker in the beginning is the climber. Sorry for that mistake.
I will go over a selection of knives to help you decide which one is best for you. It is of course only a small sample of what Victorinox has to over but it's a good place to start.

My favourite is the Outrider - same as the Rucksack only with scissors.

Hi, so you're practically Dutch. You speak a little dutch? The ranger is a great knife. PS the European championship soccer starts next week. The Dutch have a great team. Wish you all the best.
Geniet van het buitenleven en blijf gezond.

If you want the best value knife i can recommend the green army knife (08 version). It's the same size as the two big ones you covered, has an incredibly strong and thick blade with a much stronger locking mechanism. It's missing some features such as the cork screw, but the amazing thing is how cheap you can get it. It's issued to every soldier in the swiss army, the second hand market is full of more or less new ones. Got mine for 30 bucks. Obviously only an option for people in / around switzerland. One interesting thing to note is that the flathead screwdriver is also locking and can take a lot of force, useful for breaking open stuff or loosening very tight screws.

The chisel and file come in quite handy for whittling. It's much easier to make anything concave with the chisel and the file is great to smooth out the carving lines which is especially great if you carve any tool with a handle, like a wooden mallet. It's just much better to use with a handle that's filed smooth. Also, the saws are the two thinnest layers you can have on a 91mm Vic, so adding the file and chisel to a Huntsman doesn't really make it all that more bulky or heavy. You can also use the file to file your nails and clean under them with the tip which as you said is quite handy!
The Ranger is just insanely tool dense and in my experience every tool on it comes handy when bushcrafting.

Good point, It comes down to how often u use those tools compared to the volume and weight. For me the huntsman is more than enough 95% of the time. Having said that, I usually also have the Ranger at the campsite. As long as the tool works for you, you can carry as many layers as you want. Or as many different knives.
      Greetings and enjoy,
      Wim

That's not a hiker. That's a climber (openers, blades, scissors and corkscrew)
The hiker has a saw instead of scissors and the phillips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew.
On my backcountry trips I always take the ranger but my urban edc is a fieldmaster.

you are right, I hate it when there's a mistake in the info.... so stupid to oversee that. It was my first knife a long time ago. I should have checked it. Fieldmaster is definitely a great option screwdriver for the corkscrew.
      Anyway, thanks for the correction.
